Words of Radiance
Words of Radiance | Brandon Sanderson
Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archive sequence began in 2010 with the New York Times bestseller The Way of Kings. Now, the eagerly anticipated Words of Radiance continues the epic story and answers many of your questions.Six years ago, the Assassin in White, a hireling of the inscrutable Parshendi, assassinated the Alethi king on the very night a treaty between men and Parshendi was being celebrated. So began the Vengeance Pact among the highprinces of Alethkar and the War of Reckoning against the Parshendi. Now the Assassin is active again, murdering rulers all over the world of Roshar, using his baffling powers to thwart every bodyguard and elude all pursuers. Among his prime targets is Highprince Dalinar, widely considered the power behind the Alethi throne. His leading role in the war would seem reason enough, but the Assassin's master has much deeper motives.Expected by his enemies to die the miserable death of a military slave, Kaladin survived to be given command of the royal bodyguards, a controversial first for a low-status "darkeyes." Now he must protect the king and Dalinar from every common peril as well as the distinctly uncommon threat of the Assassin, all while secretly struggling to master remarkable new powers that are somehow linked to his honorspren, Syl.Brilliant but troubled Shallan strives along a parallel path. Despite being broken in ways she refuses to acknowledge, she bears a terrible burden: to somehow prevent the return of the legendary Voidbringers and the civilization-ending Desolation that will follow. The secrets she needs can be found at the Shattered Plains, but just arriving there proves more difficult than she could have imagined.Meanwhile, at the heart of the Shattered Plains, the Parshendi are making an epochal decision. Hard pressed by years of Alethi attacks, their numbers ever shrinking, they are convinced by their war leader, Eshonai, to risk everything on a desperate gamble with the very supernatural forces they once fled. The possible consequences for Parshendi and humans alike, indeed, for Roshar itself, are as dangerous as they are incalculable. The doors of the Stormlight Archive first opened to us with The Way of Kings. Read that book now available in all formats and then Words of Radiance, and you can be part of the adventure every dazzling step of the way.

Today I wanted to read my reviews and rank The Stormlight Archives books in the order of the ones I enjoyed most to least.

Now don‘t get me wrong, I enjoyed all of them.
This is just a way for me to compile my thoughts into one place for easy access when book five comes out. So head to Wildwood Reads to see why I ranked each book the way I did and join the discussion.

This is one of my favorite books of all time. The story is amazing and it is a wonderful book for big fantasy readers. Brandon Sanderson takes you on a wild ride in the adventures in this awesome read. Filled with exciting events, characters, and dialogue you will not be disappointed. As Roshar struggles to survive its inner fighting, a new power is rising. The knights radiant must be born again to save the world of men.

Here is my finished 2022 Reading Bracket. My top read of the year was Words of Radiance by Brandon Sanderson. It was also the longest book I read at well over 1k pages. It was a great year of reading!

Thank you @chasjjlee for creating this great bracket!

I have been quite sick, and unable to pick up a book. (Which really sucks!). I am going to try and get into these two, and listen to some as well, hopefully while doing puzzles.

Anyone else felt so weak from being sick, that you couldn't pick up a book??

Purpleness Yes, when I had covid I was off work for a week and a half, and only read one book. So sorry you‘re sick, and hope you feel better soon. 1y

My last wrap up of the year. I didn‘t read many books in December but I finished Words of Radiance. That‘s feels like a win to me. What did you read this month?

Check out my wrap up post: https://wildwoodreads.com/2022/12/30/december-2022-wrap-up/

jitteryjane724 I didn't read much this month either but I finally finished A Crown of Swords (Wheel of Time #7) and made a nice dent in The Secret Commonwealth (Phillip Pullman, book 2 of "The Book of Dust"). Hoping to get to the Sanderson portion of Wheel of Time next year! 1y

Taking pictures outside is all fun and games until it‘s 36 degrees out and everything is covered in frost. 😅

But the cold weather does make for cozy reading inside the house. I‘m hoping to finish Words of Radiance up in the next couple of days. Then I‘m going to jump right into Krampus. I love a spooky Christmas story.

What are you reading this week?

Who‘s your favorite Cosmere character?

I think mine is Shallan so far. I‘ve adored her from the first moment that I picked up The Way of Kings and that‘s carried over into Words of Radiance.

But I‘m sure my favorites will change the further I read into the Cosmere. That‘s why I decided to do a dedicated blog post. I wanted to document my favorites so far and see how they change the more I read.

It‘s that time of year again. Time for my bookish Christmas gift guide. So I thought I‘d give you a little sneak peek of one of the presents that I added. My husband got me a @bigblanketco blanket and it‘s literally the coziest thing ever. It‘s 10‘x10‘ and completely over the top. But I absolutely love it. I knew it would be perfect for this list. Because who wouldn‘t love reading a Christmas story under a 100 square foot blanket? 😂😂😂

TEArificbooks I have one of these on my Christmas wish list. We have a couch that is big as a king bed that we all curl up together on at night to read together so this blanket would be perfect 1y
Kimberlone I also have a big blanket and it is the best! I love how heavy and warm it is 1y

1. I am usually reading a couple books at the same time. Usually one on audiobook and one physical and sometimes a third on my Kindle.
2. Tagged is my current favorite of the year. I have bailed a few things this year, probably the most notable is The Atlas Six, which I bailed on twice…

This was phenomenal. I enjoyed book 1, but like all epic fantasy book 1‘s, it was heavy on world building and introduction of characters, so it took a long time to get to the action. This is 1300 pages of action and amazing characters. This is a beautiful high fantasy world and this book is added to my favorite reads of all time. I am a full on Sanderson fan now! 5⭐️

Even though, in my humble opinion, the series subsequently goes downhill, Words of Radiance is my June pick for #12booksof2021.

I'm still reading Rhythm of War and how I feel at the end of it will determine whether I continue with the series.

Words of Radiance, however, did what I love about Sanderson's books... it crescendo-ed! The action built and built and left me wanting more at the end.

Also, I like the pictures 😄

kplovesbooks This book was SO good!!! I need to finish this series but I feel like I have to reread this first! 2y
RaeLovesToRead @kplovesbooks For me, the series has gone up and down... This and the first one both had fantastic action in the last quarter (and usually fantasy books start well, but fizzle, so this is a big bonus!) I've still got about 1000 paged of Rhythm of War left to go! 😅 2y
kplovesbooks @RaeLovesToRead Hopefully it picks back up! This doesn't give me hope to reread and continue the series! 😂 2y
See All 10 Comments
RaeLovesToRead @kplovesbooks Don't despair! Lots of Littens absolutely love the whole series. I'm definitely in the minority 😊 2y
kplovesbooks @RaeLovesToRead 1000 page books DO make me despair though!! 😂😂 2y
vivastory I have only read The Way of Kings, which I loved. I had an eye exam a couple of weeks ago & had a nice long conversation about books with the employee who was helping me. He said that he really disliked Rhythm of War. I hope that's a minority opinion though 2y
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory I feel a bit guilty for not being completely in love with Sanderson's work. The Way of Kings and Words of Radiance both ended in some great action sequences (although I did find getting there a bit of a slog). I'd give them both 7/10 - rounded up to 4*. Oathbringer was all over the place structurally and it's too early to tell with Rhythm of War. If GR reviews are anything to go off, his fans are not at all disappointed. 2y
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory Also, it was still the best book I read in June! 😊😁 2y
vivastory I hope to read Words of Radiance soonish. I did love Mistborn. It's one of my favorite trilogies of all time. 2y
RaeLovesToRead @vivastory I've got the first Mistborn on my shelf but first I need to find out what happens to Fitz and the Fool and before I do that I'll probably read The Liveship Trilogy... 2y

I didn't rate the first 40% but once I got to know all the characters again, I can safely say that Words of Radiance was pretty epic. Some of the most complex lore-building I've come across in fantasy, lots of action, excellent illustrations and kept me on my toes 🌟🌟🌟🌟

Fellow readers: does this one get better?

I'm nearly a third of the way through Words of Radiance and I'm still waiting for it to grab me. I liked (but didn't love) The Way of Kings so thought I'd carry on with the series.

It usually takes me a while to get into a fantasy world, but it doesn't seem to be capturing my imagination in the same way that, say, a Robin Hobb or George R.R. Martin book would.

I'll read on and see what happens!

DaveGreen7777 I did feel this one got better as it went along, and the third book is actually my favorite in the series so far. Hope this helps! 😁 3y
RaeLovesToRead @DaveGreen7777 Thank you, Dave! There's a lot of hopping about at the moment and I think I've left it a bit long after reading the first. I will persevere!! Hopefully I'll get more into it and read the rest of the series... 😊 3y

The first book was filled with so much world building that it was hard to keep track of everyone. The second book was incredible because you‘re already fully immersed in the lives of all the characters and now they are finally interacting! I love Shallon‘s story. This book brings together so many of the plot lines that have been building. So many questions are answered. Now I can‘t wait to read the next one!

I enjoyed this second book from the Stormlight Archive just as much as I enjoyed the first and I‘ll begin the third book soon. Wonderful progression of the story, and the character development continues to satisfy.

Bit more warfare oriented, but didn‘t lose my interest. I enjoy the Interludes — it will be fun to see if those minor characters become major. And ... Wit, the Shakespeare-like clown, is one of my favorite people/creatures.

What can i say, this book is as good as it gets! Although each of the books in the SLA is a chunkster worth over 1000 pages, the story and the language is an easy read but so well written. Amazing world and magic system which is not so over the top, not too complex political intrigues and what amazing character building. But somehow I m finding shallan a bit too arrogant and Navami‘s indifference to her own king son is a bit weird.
