#2021Book9
I liked the main story in this novel, though I desperately wish that the main character hadn't been so dull and easily manipulated by the bad guy who had absolutely no redeeming qualities. But I loved all of the secondary characters and wish the whole book had just focused on them.

I didn't hate this book but I didn't love it either. I found myself rolling my eyes alot as it was very unrealistic and predictable but it also made me smile in some parts which were quiet charming. An easy read that requires no thinking.

ljuliel Not one of my favorite Binchys. I like her writing , but a lot is pretty predictable. Especially if I can figure them out. I rarely ever figure out book plots ahead of time. (edited) 5y

Quentins isn't just an ordinary restaurant, but one that holds a special meaning to so many people, for various reasons. And the story of how Quentins came about, is just as important.
With this, I have finally completed #LitsyAtoZ for this year!

It's definitely not sweater weather here in 🌞 Florida yet, but I really wanted to use my newest mug. If I only used this mug on real sweater weather days, I'd only get to use it about 3 days a year, lol!

Is it possible to tell the story of a generation and a city through the history of a restaurant? Ella Brady wants to make a documentary that will capture the spirit of Dublin from the 1970s to the present. Maeve Binchy introduces us to new friends and brings back old friends. Ella finds some stories are too sacred to tell and some secrets must be kept. In the end, Ella finally gets to know herself. Interesting characters. Highly recommended!

Final Discussion

Question 4 of 4

Tove_Reads I liked it. Felt like Quentins himself was a bit of an odd character, misplaced. I liked Derry, and in general the people in Ella‘s life, except the idiot. 5y
CarolynM It was a nice easy read. Not very realistic, but most of the time I didn't mind suspending disbelief. My favourite characters were the twins Ella was tutoring - they were very amusing. 5y
cobwebmoth I liked it. I was worried about how things would turn out, but I was satisfied with the ending. 5y
EadieB I liked this book a lot. I was glad to see characters from the other book, Scarlet Feather. I liked Derry too and my favorite part was when Don finally got arrested. 5y

CarolynM Not wise at all and I'm not really sure I understood what she thought she was going to achieve. I was glad to see him in the hands of the police at last. 5y
cobwebmoth I don't think it was wise, but I'm glad it resulted with Don getting arrested. 5y

Tove_Reads Well, no, because he‘d been there looking for it, and it was clearly a big deal. Hand it in the minute she found it. 5y
CarolynM No, not at all. The right thing to do would have been to hand it over to the authorities immediately. 5y

Entertaining read, doesn't require too much thinking about. Thanks @Andrew65 and fellow buddy readers, I look forward to the final discussion.

Andrew65 I‘ve now read this twice, didn‘t remember much at all from the first time, but it is a really enjoyable read. Great to have you join us. Think England just handed Australia the ashes, I understand loyalty but why name the same team when some not performing and major weaknesses in the batting. Not helped by Anderson‘s injury. Think Root is turning out to be a weak captain. 5y
CarolynM @Andrew65 He's a lot better at the DRS than ours! 5y
Andrew65 @CarolynM True! Don‘t know why he burnt his last review in the That game. Desperation I think. Not sure I see him being captain much longer. But I admire how he handled losing that once in a generation game, great integrity & positivity about not dwelling on it and bouncing back. I envisage a big score from them in this game - wicket and conditions allowing. September not the best time to play a test match in England, in a wet and cool Summer. 5y

Really enjoyed this book from Maeve Binchy, & it was good to see a few faces from her previous books make an appearance in this one. In this book she expertly put in an ongoing story alongside a few short stories linked to Quentins, a high quality restaurant in Dublin. A good group of characters. Definitely one of her better books for me, & there is tough competition there!

Now in day 7 of #SummersEndReadathon : 3086 Pages Read, 7 Books Finished.

Prairiegirl_reading She writes great characters and I do love when some will pop up in other books. I don‘t love when this happens and I haven‘t read the other book with that character‘s main storyline. I would prefer to read in order if I knew. I miss her characters when I finish her books though. 😄 5y
Scochrane26 Quentin‘s and Scarlet Feather have always been my favorite of hers. 5y
Andrew65 @Scochrane26 I‘d agree, and I‘d possibly add Heart and Soul, and A Night of Rain and Stars to this list. 5y
Andrew65 @Prairiegirl_reading Agree with all of this. Initially I had read these randomly, but restarted and reading them in published order, definitely adds more to the experience. 5y

Discussion of Part 3

Question 4 of 4

CarolynM I thought it was a bit strange that he didn't leave it to Brenda and Patrick or at least offer to sell it to them. But I found the manner of Quentin's involvement very unlikely all along so I guess what he did with it when he died made as much sense as what he did to start with. 5y
EadieB No I thought Quentin should have left Quentins to Brenda and Patrick too. 5y
Tove_Reads I felt it was a bit odd, the whole part with Quentins to begin with. He was so distant. 5y
Andrew65 Very strange that he didn‘t just leave it to Patrick and Brenda, after all they were the ones who made it. @CarolynM @Tove_Reads @EadieB I found the whole situation quite bizarre, why want a restaurant then go away? 5y
cobwebmoth I don't think his plan was bad, but all of his decisions have seemed a little strange. 5y

Question 3 of 4

CarolynM I like Derry but I find it a bit hard to believe that he would become friends with Ella at all and very hard to believe that it would happen so quickly. 5y
EadieB I think Derry has been very nice to Ella considering her circumstance with Don. I think Ella will finally wake up and learn from her mistakes. 5y
Tove_Reads Ella is growing up. Not everyone was born to make the right decisions at once. Derry seems to be a surprisingly decent guy, considering his field and all. 5y

Discussion of Part 3

Question 2 of 4

CarolynM As before. The why is fairly obvious. Of course he's still looking for Ella because he wants the money he has left her access to. He thinks he still has a hold over her so she will hand over what're he asks for (including the money supposedly for her father). 5y
EadieB Yes I think he faked his death. He everyone to think he's dead in order to take the heat off of him. He will be looking for Ella for his computer and money. She like a fool will probably meet up with him. 5y
Tove_Reads Yes, faked it, yes, still looking for her. He‘s someone she has to get rid of once and for all. 5y
Andrew65 Well there was no body, which makes you think it was faked! If that is the case he will still be trying to get at Ella to get the laptop. They think this will make Ella and her friends relax. 5y
cobwebmoth Yes, I think he's still alive. I hope she comes to her senses and doesn't give into him. 5y

Question 1 of 4

CarolynM Not really, and I didn't believe he had actually done it - smacks of the John Stonehouses or Robert Maxwells to me. 5y
EadieB No becauseI don't think he really killed himself. I think it's a faked death. 5y
Tove_Reads Fake news! Don‘t know why what she‘ll do, maybe growing up, found the right thing? 5y
Andrew65 Did seem a bit too fortuitous, worried this will make her do something silly. Lost love and all that! 5y
cobwebmoth I thought that the fact that there was no body found made things very suspicious. I hope she'll finally give the laptop to the authorities. 5y

Discussion of Part 2

Question 4 of 4

EadieB Anything is possible with Ella. I don't think a relationship with Derry King is a good thing as I don't think his wife would like that and you shouldn't have a personal relationship with someone you are trying to do business with. 5y
CarolynM I think it's highly likely that that is the way the story is going, but I think it's pretty far fetched. I think Derry is to mature and too sophisticated to have any real common ground with Ella and Ella needs to acquire a bit more common sense before she gets involved with anyone 5y
cobwebmoth I could see the story going that way, but I think that Ella really needs to work on herself before she brings someone else into her drama. 5y

Question 3 of 4

EadieB First of all, I think Nick was crazy to send Ella to New York as she is a bit irresponsible. I think Nick's attitude was fine as he is realizing that he should not have sent Ella to New York. 5y
CarolynM I don't think I would have staked my company's future on Ella's ability to do anything. I think they all got very lucky. Derry and Kim are just a bit to good to be true. (edited) 5y
cobwebmoth It's hard to have confidence in Ella because of all of her past bad decisions. 5y
Tove_Reads Maybe he wanted to show her that he he believes in her, and it‘s time for her to take on real responsibilities in life. 5y

Question 2 of 4

EadieB If Don does come to get the laptop, I think Ella will be in for a hard time. I think Ella is going to hold on to the laptop as she wants to see Don in person again. 5y
CarolynM Absolutely! He's not going to just let it go. I think she's still in danger from him and his family. And if the police find out she has it she'll be in trouble with them as well, not to mention convincing everyone who lost money that she was in on it. She really is a very silly girl. (edited) 5y
cobwebmoth It's definitely a dangerous situation she has put herself in. I wish she would have turned it over to the authorities first thing. 5y

Question 1 of 4

EadieB Don wants the laptop back so the Guarda doesn't get a hold of it. No I think Ella should bring the laptop to the Guarda. I think Ella is waiting for Don to pick the laptop up in person. 5y
CarolynM I agree with @EadieB I suspect also that now things have settled down a bit he can access more of the money he has squirrelled away but he needs the laptop to do it. 5y
cobwebmoth I agree. Don is still up to no good. Ella still wants to think he'll change, or that he really loved her, but I think she'll be disappointed. 5y
Tove_Reads Don‘t know why it took so long. It‘s a bit weird. There must be something on it he needs at some point, but he could not get caught with the computer. Don‘t know why she still doesn‘t want to hand it over to the Gardai. 5y

EadieB I think Patrick and Brenda seem too much in a panic over having a baby. I think they should settle down and things may turn around otherwise it seems to me that their marriage may be doomed. 5y
cobwebmoth I think the accident reminded Patrick of what was really important. I think as long as they can keep things in perspective they'll be okay. 5y
CarolynM I'm not sure he changed that much, things pretty well fell into his lap with Brenda doing most of the organising. I hope the accident will make him more demonstrative towards Brenda, and more likely to express his appreciation for her, in the future. (edited) 5y

Question 3 of 4

EadieB I think Quentin was the only person that was nice to Tobe and treated him as a human being and that‘s why Tobe wanted to help Quentin. 5y
cobwebmoth I agree. His family were horrible to him, so he didn't want to waste his money on them. Quentin was much more deserving, and he reminded him of himself. 5y
CarolynM Clearly Tobe was unimpressed by his family while Quentin showed real class and professionalism but I found this part of the story pretty hard to believe, particularly the fact that Quentin was going to go off travelling rather than actually establish and run the restaurant himself. Given Quentin's skills it makes sense he could make a success of a restaurant but to take the risk on strangers being successful was bizarre! 5y

EadieB She definitely should give over the computer but since she has bad judgement, she will not do so! I guess she thinks she is protecting him and he will come back to her for his computer. (edited) 5y

CarolynM He's a total narcissist. He's not behaving honestly in his personal life and it looks very like he's not being honest in his professional life either. 5y

Tove_Reads Well, he‘s a liar, but she does not want to see it. You can‘t really trust someone like him, but she has the right to be angry with him, since he does that to her. One day she‘ll be angry with herself as well. 5y
CarolynM She should have been cross with herself for having believed his lies in the first place. 5y

Tove_Reads Sounds like a typical, ‘been together forever‘ marriage. They really care for their daughter. 5y
CarolynM They seem to be happy even though they're not behaving the way Ella thinks they should. I don't think her judgement about relationships should be given much weight. 5y
EadieB I agree with CarolynM. They seem to be happy but Ella thinks they need to downsize. Ella does have poor judgement and they should not listen to her. 5y
Andrew65 They seem quite comfortable with each other, but for both of them Ella seems the most important thing. 5y

Discussion Questions for Chapter 1 - 3.

Question 1 of 4

Tove_Reads Of course not. A liar is a liar is a liar. One of the oldest lies in the book. Lying, leading her on. He‘ll never leave his wife. His done it before and will do it again. 5y
CarolynM It never ceases to amaze me that women allow themselves to be deceived by men like this. I'm afraid I found the story really irritating. I had no sympathy for Ella, I just wanted to shake some sense into her. 5y
EadieB I would tell Ella not to waste the best years of her life on a married man who will never leave his wife. 5y
Andrew65 This was a crazy decision, he was almost old enough to be her dad! She fell for all of his lines and was wasting her time on him. I agree with @CarolynM she needed someone to shake some sense into her. 5y
cobwebmoth It was very foolish for her to get involved with Don. It's difficult for me to understand that kind of thinking. If he's willing to betray his wife, wouldn't he be willing to betray her, too? 5y

Book: Quentins. I went through a big Maeve Binchy phase in my late teens/early twenties. This and Tara Road were my faves.

Author: Quentin Blake's illustrations were always a huge part of my love for Roald Dahl's stories. Up there with Munsch and Martchenko for great pairs!

TV Show: QUEER EYE!

Andrew65 @rubyslippersreads I'm really glad to hear that is one of your favourites as I haven't read it yet and obviously have a treat coming up. 😊 I have deliberately rationed her books so that I still have more to look forward to. If I chose a favourite from those I have read Scarlet Feather would come close but would most probably go for 7y
Allthebookclubs @rubyslippersreads I LOVED Light A Penny Candle too!!!! 6y

Pickpick

Although this took me longer to read than it should have, it was worth every minute and I'm kind of sorry to see it end. Maeve Binchy's books are definitely comfort reading for me. Also, letter Q for #LitsyAtoZ

mcipher I haven't read her in years an I used to adore her books. I'll have to put her on my list to pick up next time I hit the library! 8y
CocoReads @mcipher I go a few years in between her books but every time I pick one up it's so comforting and I feel like her characters are my friends. 8y

I have about a 2.5 hour drive to a concert today. Do you think I'm taking enough reading? 🎸🤘

jfalkens Probably not 😂 8y
CocoReads 😄😄 paper books for the way there sand ebooks for the way home in the wee hours when it's too dark for print. So glad when we make the same trip next week, we'll be staying the night then. 8y
