The Dressmaker
The Dressmaker | Rosalie Ham
A darkly satirical novel of love, revenge, and 1950s haute couture soon to be a major motion picture starring Kate Winslet and Liam Hemsworth After twenty years spent mastering the art of dressmaking at couture houses in Paris, Tilly Dunnage returns to the small Australian town she was banished from as a child. She plans only to check on her ailing mother and leave. But Tilly decides to stay, and though she is still an outcast, her lush, exquisite dresses prove irresistible to the prim women of Dungatar. Through her fashion business, her friendship with Sergeant Farrat the town s only policeman, who harbors an unusual passion for fabrics and a budding romance with Teddy, the local football star whose family is almost as reviled as hers, she finds a measure of grudging acceptance. But as her dresses begin to arouse competition and envy in town, causing old resentments to surface, it becomes clear that Tilly s mind is set on a darker design: exacting revenge on those who wronged her, in the most spectacular fashion."

Quick read, liked the female lead and the police man very much!
I found there were almost too many other characters to remember, though they each had their quirks.
Nice to read something set in Australia, instead a few earlier in the year too.

Cathythoughts Nice review 👍🏻. Kate Winslet played the main character, she was very good at it too. Did you see the movie? ! 4y

The Sydney Morning Herald called it “a feral version of Sea Change”, which is pretty much spot on. Despite the dark ending, there are quite a few laugh out loud moments. The humour is deeply Australian, though, so I‘m not sure how it would translate for an international audience. An interesting Australian gothic, but not without its faults. Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/the-dressmaker-rosalie-ham/ #Australian #Gothic

lynneamch Really helpful review. I may have to skim most of the book and just look for the detailed sewing terminology, as that's right up my alley. In any case, I loved the movie. Is Jane Harper on your Australian author list? High rec for all of hers. 5y
keepingupwiththepenguins @lynneamch Thank you! You'll find most of the detailed sewing stuff in the first half/two-thirds, it runs out of steam a little towards the end, if that helps? And yes, Jane Harper is definitely on my list - I've got The Dry waiting for me on my TBR shelf, I've read a couple of extracts, she's fantastic! 5y

Another win for #HubbysChoice I very much enjoyed this book, even though it‘s steeped in tragedy, that distinctly Australian sense of the ridiculous shines through. I have yet to see the movie but Hubs is a fan so I guess I‘ll be watching it soon. Tillys revenge on all the townsfolk at the end was wonderful, after all they put her through.4⭐️ #MountTBR2019 #Bk8 #Pop19 #PopSugarReadingChallenge #BookYouMeantToReadIn2018

Almost halfway done with this very Australian story about the scandal & gossip in a small outback town. If you ever wanted to know what those little towns were like, I highly recommend picking this up. It‘s both ridiculously funny & heartbreaking at the same time. I have a headache creeping up so I‘m just finishing a chapter, drinking my chamomile tea then heading to bed.😴Talk to you all tomorrow!

After the Hubs success at choosing my #FairyTaleRetelling book the other night, I gave him another shot when I couldn‘t make up my mind between these wonderful novels for my next read. From all these, he‘s chosen The Dressmaker coz he saw the movie the other night & loved it. So here is my #MountTBR2019 #Bk8 Tilly Dunnage left her small Aussie hometown at 10yrs old under bad terms, now she‘s back after working in Paris, hoping to prove herself.

Wow @LapReader what a lovely array of gifts, thank you so much. I love it all. You've certainly chosen some very different books and movies - I have seen The Dressmaker, but I haven't read the book and I haven't seen The Kite Runner or read any of the other books. I'm feeling very spoiled. #Readthemoviesswap

LapReader Yay! I included the receipt so you can swap it for another movie. Thanks for your patience. I‘m loving your comments and #LMPBC pick xo 6y
CarolynM @LapReader No problem - I think you had your priorities right. I don't want to swap the movie because I'll need to watch it again after reading it🙂 Glad you're enjoying the #LMPBC book - there's a lot in it to react to! 6y

This has been a GREAT day for bookmail! I got the rest of what I needed for #FeedAReader and #CupidGoesPostal, the packages got here early AND my apartment manager didn't lose them 😂📚 So, those will go out tomorrow!!

I bought this one book for myself, but don't worry it wasn't on my TBR. My boss actually recommended it to me, believe it or not. 🤓

benchley1 I loved the movie, been meaning to read it! I'll await a review 7y

An easy read, that has you smiling one minute frowning the next. Capturing the small town mentality from the era, many personalities, a lot that would not easily be accepted. The child who was shunned has come back and will get her revenge on vengeful town who sent her away.

I always try to find original covers, I want the book, not the film. Plus I hate trying to remove stickers from my precious books. Don't put them on people!

myers85 Yes why do shops insist on ruining our books with stickers?! You either have to leave it on, which tarnishes a nice cover or attempt to peel it off which can lead to an annoying sticky mark... makes the blood boil! 8y
BarbaraTheBibliophage I've heard that warming the sticker with a blow dryer gets them off without leaving a spot. I haven't tried it though! 8y

Just saw the movie of this and had a similar reaction as to the book - why is considered revenge comedy? It seems more like a tragedy to me, with occasional moments of black humor. Fabulous clothes, though.

ScientistSam Just realized it's Marion Boyce who did the design. No wonder it's fantastic - I love what she does with Phryne Fisher 8y

Last one! Matador outfit worn by the repressed (but secretly fabulous) policeman (played by Hugo Weaving in the movie ❤️) and red and white dress worn by mean girl (and recipient of major makeover) Gertrude.

It's a gothic tale set in a small, Australian country town in the 1950s. 👌

The Dressmaker follows Tilly who, after years away, has returned to her home town. Rumours & gossip follow her wherever she goes as only it can in a small (strange) town.... and so does tragedy. I look forward to watching the movie- seems to be written for the big screen.
