Girls of Paper and Fire
Girls of Paper and Fire | Natasha Ngan
Each year, eight beautiful girls are chosen as Paper Girls to serve the king. It's the highest honor they could hope for...and the most cruel. But this year, there's a ninth girl. And instead of paper, she's made of fire. In this lush fantasy, Lei is a member of the Paper caste, the lowest and most oppressed class in Ikhara. She lives in a remote village with her father, where the decade-old trauma of watching her mother snatched by royal guards still haunts her. Now, the guards are back, and this time it's Lei they're after--the girl whose golden eyes have piqued the king's interest. Over weeks of training in the opulent but stifling palace, Lei and eight other girls learn the skills and charm that befit being a king's consort. But Lei isn't content to watch her fate consume her. Instead, she does the unthinkable--she falls in love. Her forbidden romance becomes enmeshed with an explosive plot that threatens the very foundation of Ikhara, and Lei, still the wide-eyed country girl at heart, must decide just how far she's willing to go for justice and revenge. Presented by James Patterson, Natasha Ngan's lyrical, searing, visceral fantasy, Girls of Paper and Fire, will remind us how precious freedom is--and the price we must pay to achieve it.

This book started out promising and then nothing happened. It just plateaued. I have no interest in continuing the story, unfortunately.

A soft pick due to personal taste; YA never quite does it for me.

I really enjoyed this book! I loved the kind of revolution it featured and the fight back against cruelty. And of course the romance! Overall, a great read and I highly recommend it. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Lei is taken from her village and made to serve as a concubine to the king as one of his Paper Girls. Her resolve to free herself of the situation solidifies when she falls in love. I enjoyed this book. The world is vivid and reminded me of Daughter of Smoke and Bone because of the human/demon denizins of the world. There were also aspects I didn't enjoy, and the climax didn't quite feel earned. #Fantasy

Ok, so this wasn‘t the best book in the world... some bits were kinda annoying, there were parts way underdeveloped (and vice versa), and a coupla scenes were pretty triggering for me. BUT the premise was fun, the narration was good, the story was easy, and ABOVE ALL, there were lgbtq themes! I‘m a sucker for a wlw novel, so I did enjoy this book!

The cover drew me in and it started out strong, but it definitely lost me probably around half way in. I was listening to it as an audiobook so I finished while working on home projects, cleaning, organizing...I was disappointed after it started off so strong, but it was just choppy and unbelievable. It gets ⭐️⭐️⭐️ anyway because I was totally drawn in to the start. I won‘t be reading book 2.

Lei is a Paper Girl, which are teenage girls who are forced to join the Demon King's harem. She makes friends, falls in love, and joins a rebellion, but it doesn't stop the Demon King from raping her. The book shows the devastating affects of sexual assault and how it impacts a person's life. I love how Lei wasn't silenced by the Demon King and how she supported her fellow Paper Girls. I can't wait to read the rest of this trilogy.

This one has been on my TBR for a while- and marks the 102nd #MtTBRChallenge book of 2019 for me! Plus, this is my final book for #Booked2019 - #ParanormalMCPoC - and I am so glad to already have my hands on the sequel! I really enjoyed this engaging fantasy. The world-building fascinated me and I loved the characters, too! It might be my #FavoriteDecemberRead #HollyJollyReading #WinterGames #ReadNosedReindeer

Trigger warning for violence and sexual assault.
