An all-new Dresden Files story headlines this urban fantasy short story collection starring the Windy City's favorite wizard. The world of Harry Dresden, Chicago's only professional wizard, is rife with intrigue--and creatures of all supernatural stripes. And you'll make their intimate acquaintance as Harry delves into the dark side of truth, justice, and the American way in this must-have short story collection. From the Wild West to the bleachers at Wrigley Field, humans, zombies, incubi, and even fey royalty appear, ready to blur the line between friend and foe. In the never-before-published "Zoo Day," Harry treads new ground as a dad, while fan-favorite characters Molly Carpenter, his onetime apprentice, White Council Warden Anastasia Luccio, and even Bigfoot stalk through the pages of more classic tales. With twelve stories in all, Brief Cases offers both longtime fans and first-time readers tantalizing glimpses into Harry's funny, gritty, and unforgettable realm, whetting their appetites for more to come from the wizard with a heart of gold. The collection includes: "Curses", from THE NAKED CITY, edited by Ellen Datlow "AAAA Wizardry", from the Dresden Files RPG "Even Hand", from DARK AND STORMY KNIGHTS, edited by P. N. Elrod "B is for Bigfoot", from UNDER MY HAT: TALES FROM THE CAULDRON, edited by Jonathan Strahan. Republished in WORKING FOR BIGFOOT "I was a Teenage Bigfoot", from BLOOD LITE 3: AFTERTASTE, edited by Kevin J. Anderson. Republished in WORKING FOR BIGFOOT. "Bigfoot on Campus", from HEX APPEAL, edited by P. N. Elrod. Republished in WORKING FOR BIGFOOT. "Bombshells", from DANGEROUS WOMEN, edited by George R. R. Martin and Gardner Dozois "Jury Duty", from UNBOUND, edited by Shawn Speakman "Cold Case", from SHADOWED SOULS, edited by Jim Butcher and Kerrie Hughes "Day One", from UNFETTERED II, edited by Shawn Speakman "A Fistful of Warlocks", from STRAIGHT OUTTA TOMBSTONE, edited by David Boop "Zoo Day" - brand-new novella, original to this collection

Finished the last three short stories

📚 Day One - a story from the POV of Butters - our lovely ME has to train for his new side job

📚 Zoo Day - set the same day as Day One, POV of Harry, Maggie and Mouse, they take a trip to the zoo and every one of them has a different experience; loved Mouse's POV

📚 Jury Duty - what happens when a wizard has to show up for jury duty

#audiocrafting a cardigan with these Dresden short stories. It was kind of a shock to not have the whole thing read by James Marsters!!

VeganCleopatra I'd love to see the end result! Is the pattern on Ravelry? 2y
jen_hayes7 @VeganCleopatra Oh, I‘ll take a picture with it soon! Thanks so much for being interested in seeing how it turned out. The pattern is from Lady Jay Crochet. I do believe she has some available on Ravelry; not sure if this one is. It‘s the Solvieg cardigan. 2y

🎧 12 stories. I‘ve read a couple before. Not all are narrated by James Marsters. Not all are told by Harry. Quite a few about Molly. The best one by far is the last one, ZOO. You get to hear the story in Harry‘s POV & then Molly, Maggie & my favorite, Mouse! A mixed bag but overall a really solid entry in the Dresden Universe.

This is a signed edition from Jim Butcher‘s author event that I attended a couple of years ago. All but one of the short stories in this collection had been published before, but the last new story is set immediately before the action of Peace Talks, which just came out. I saved the last few stories in the collection to read in preparation for the new novel, and I loved them. I am listening to Peace Talks and glad to be back in Dresden‘s world.

I‘ve missed Dresden‘s world, I enjoyed this book of short stories probably more than I should have from his absence. Some were new to me, some I‘d read before but still enjoyed the re-read, and I found it interesting to see how much the character had changed throughout the series reflected in this collection. The short stories from early in the series that are written more noir-esque (broad walls into the office of a Private Dick) seem so off....

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ... compared to what the characters have grown into over the years, it‘s a bit jarring to read them now, but by the end we get some new stories, showing us where our characters are now and what the future might hold for them. 6y
JazzFeathers I really need to read this series. I get a sense that it gas evolved enormously over the years. How may years has it gone on? I remember discovering it in the early 2000s, when l lived in Dublin, and it was already a few years old. 6y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers The first book came out in 2000 I believe, so the series is 18 years old this year, with 15 books and now 2 collections of short stories. 6y

I met Jim Butcher! He did a Question and Answer session with the audience, then signed books! I love The Dresden Files, an urban fantasy set in Chicago. Butcher‘s new book is a series of short stories that span the time period of the 15 book ( so far) series. I adore the audio versions of these books. James Marsters (from Buffy) narrates them, and he does a perfect job. Mr. Butcher was a delight at the event, smart, funny, and kind.

KathyWheeler If they ever did a Dresden Files show again, I‘m convinced, from the audiobooks, that only James Marsters can play Harry. (edited) 6y
Swe_Eva I never watched Buffy, but a while back I was at a friend‘s house and they had an episode playing and I recognized the voice and was very confused until I figured out that the actor and the reader were the same person. 😂 6y

Brief Cases is a fun anthology that will help you get your Dresden Files fix while waiting for Peace Talks to publish. I appreciated all the big foot stories because they were pretty unique and I loved Butters story because hey, it‘s Butters after all. I even like Johnny‘s story because it had a few twists in it with a whole lot of action. My favorite though was “Zoo Day.” Full review at www.thegenreminx.com #bookreviewer #TheGenreMinxBookReviews
