How to Hang a Witch
How to Hang a Witch | Adriana Mather
For fans of Conversion and Mean Girls, comes a debut novel where the trials of high school start to feel like a modern day witch hunt for a teen with all the wrong connections to Salems past. Salem, Massachusetts is the site of the infamous witch trials and the new home of Samantha Mather. Recently transplanted from New York City, Sam and her stepmother are not exactly welcomed with open arms. Sam is the descendant of Cotton Mather, one of the men responsible for those trials and almost immediately, she becomes the enemy of a group of girls who call themselves The Descendants. And guess who their ancestors were? If dealing with that weren't enough, Sam also comes face to face with a real live (well technically dead) ghost. A handsome, angry ghost who wants Sam to stop touching his stuff. But soon Sam discovers she is at the center of a centuries old curse affecting anyone with ties to the trials. Sam must come to terms with the ghost and find a way to work with the Descendants to stop a deadly cycle that has been going on since the first accused witch was hanged. If any town should have learned its lesson, it's Salem. But history may be about to repeat itself. From the Hardcover edition.

Binged 4 hrs of this today while organizing the house. After watching Hocus Pocus 2 last night, I was in the mood for more Contemporary Salem YA content 🐈‍⬛ Love that the author has actual Salem trial ties too!

Absolutely loved this one!🖤 I love how much actual witch trial information was weaved into it and the fact that the author is actually related to descendants. She highlights how this story is a mirror to modern day bullying and how we just need to break the cycle🖤👏🏻

When Sams dad goes into a coma, her step mother and her move to her fathers home town… Salem. But not everyone is excited for the Mathers to be back…

RosePressedPages I‘ve been wanting to read her other book, haunting the deep! 3y

I love how she weaves fiction into a real family tree. The story was well thought out and well written. I didn‘t expect it to be as good as it actually was tbh. I would give it 5/5.

This was a really interesting book. The author creates a work of fiction while also drawing on her own family roots based on being one of Cotton Mather's descendants. She parallels the Salem Witch Trials to modern day bullying in high school while also weaving in a some ghosts and modern day witches. It was fun and suspenseful, with likeable characters, witty dialogue, and plenty of action. I enjoyed this one so much I already bought the sequel!

mcctrish Oh I didn‘t know there was a sequel?! Thanks for the heads up. I really enjoyed this book 4y

This book reminded me of The Craft and Mean Girls, but it was also original. I liked Samantha (Sam) from the beginning, and I‘m a sucker for books with a cute teenage boy ghost (Mediator series by Meg Cabot). I was glad I owned both “How to Hang a Witch” and “Haunting the Deep” so I could move on to the sequel.

Not gonna lie, I‘m a little jealous of Adriana Mather for having a family so steeped in history and artifacts and records to prove it.

BethM Mediator is awesome. And I‘m also totally jealous of her family history too 😂 4y

⭐⭐⭐
I am still struggling with the June #doublespin but by gum I've got the July one done. I owe it all to audio and fluff.

The subject matter is "serious", but this was essentially fluff. As far as YA goes not the strongest, but not the worst either.

This is my only #CYOReadathon finish so far... (because I've read so little the past five days I'm just counting the whole time as Readathon time.)

It's just a YA book, but a character just noted that the the first 3 people accused of witchcraft were an invalid, a homeless person and a servant. In context the discussion was that no one spoke up for them. So I kind of side eye anyone in a position of power railing about witch hunts.

Clare-Dragonfly Yeah. Witch hunts have historically always been against the powerless. 4y

Despite taking me way longer than it should have to finish this, (thanks to lack of reading time), this was SO good, if not nearly perfect. Witches, ghost, witchcraft, history, complex characters....oh, where to start! Love how the author was inspired by her own family history, too. Also, yet another ghost ends up becoming one of my”book boyfriends”. Guess I have a “thing” for literary ghosts 😂

A well crafted story by a descendant of Cotton Mather, who is also the magic character in the book, of the Salem Witch Trials and their modern day effect. Sam Mather finds herself in Salem, after her father goes into a coma, and discovers a link to between deaths of descendants of the families involved in the trials. She makes a tenuous alliance with members of witch descendants after realizing they're all in danger. *more below*

IamIamIam This hovered between pick and so-so because it is extremely YA, so flawless girls, drop dead gorgeous guys and an extremely odd romance element. After continual eye rolling from me, I noticed that the story got better and was heavy on historical notes and the descriptions of New England were really well done. I didn't hate it by the end but I prefer more mature YA. I'm too far removed from high school to get a lot out of that aspect! 5y

Got this out of the library & it's painfully YA. Kind of like Twilight but with witches. I was interested because the author is a descendant of Cotton Mather, as is her main character 🙄, but after 5 chapters I'm not sure I'll make it all the way through.

I have some thoughts about this one. It was very entertaining and I loved the bits of actually history thrown in. Witches and Salem and magic, what more could a girl ask for? However, it wasn't very well written. It was fairly cheesy at times. But I can absolutely overlook that because it was su h a fun read. I'd recommend this if you are looking for a fun, easy read during this spooky, witchy season.
