Haunting the Deep
Haunting the Deep | Adriana Mather
The Titanic meets the delicious horror of Ransom Riggs and the sass of Mean Girls in this follow-up to the #1 New York Times bestseller How to Hang a Witch, in which a contemporary teen finds herself a passenger on the famous "ship of dreams"--a story made all the more fascinating because the author's own relatives survived the doomed voyage. Samantha Mather knew her family's connection to the infamous Salem Witch Trials might pose obstacles to an active social life. But having survived one curse, she never thought she'd find herself at the center of a new one. This time, Sam is having recurring dreams about the Titanic . . . where she's been walking the deck with first-class passengers, like her aunt and uncle. Meanwhile, in Sam's waking life, strange missives from the Titanic have been finding their way to her, along with haunting visions of people who went down with the ship. Ultimately, Sam and the Descendants, along with some help from heartthrob Elijah, must unravel who is behind the spell that is drawing her ever further into the dream ship . . . and closer to sharing the same grim fate as its ghostly passengers. Praise for How to Hang a Witch: "It's like Mean Girls meets history class in the best possible way." --Seventeen Magazine "Mather shines a light on the lessons the Salem Witch Trials can teach us about modern-day bullying--and what we can do about it." --Bustle.com "Strikes a careful balance of creepy, fun, and thoughtful." --NPR "I am utterly addicted to Adriana Mather's electric debut. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, twisting and turning with ghosts, witches, an ancient curse, and--sigh--romance. It's beautiful. Haunting. The characters are vivid and real. I. Could. Not. Put. It. Down." --Jennifer Niven, bestselling author of All the Bright Places

This book has such an exciting premise! Drawn by her dreams into the past, the MC joins her relatives on the Titanic - but someone may be trying to keep her there! Full of suspense, this one didn't have me reading with quite the urgency as Mather's other stories, but it kept me hooked! I'm officially a fangirl of this author!

2nd book for #seriesread21 and #bookspinbingo
Sam's school dance is having a titantic theme and she doesn't think it's a coincidne5 that she's been receiving packages with titantic items. She's also been having strange dreams of being on the titantic w/her relatives from that time period. What's happening here? It must be a spell, right? But who else besides her and her friends know how to cast them? ⭐⭐⭐⭐

I love books based around the Titanic, and this one is up there with my favourites. I had big expectations for the second part of the How To Hang A Witch duology and I'm so glad that this book lived up to what I wanted it to. The plot was amazing, and the mystery was so interesting and completely unpredictable. The vibe was haunting and the history was so interesting. I loved the romance and the friendships. An amazing duology I'm glad I read it!

As much as I enjoyed “How to Hang a Witch,” I liked this book even more. Sam continues to find her place in Salem, and things are almost crazier this time around. I love how history of the Titanic is woven into the story, and while the ending tied everything up, I do hope we see future books with these characters.

BethM I wish she‘d write more! 3y
Kar2b @BethM me too! I bought the first book in her other series, but I‘d love to see more about these characters! I love the ghost aspect... the only other series like it is the Mediator series by Meg Cabot, but I like the historical aspect that these books bring. 3y

1st book of #24b4Monday finished— devoured, TBH. I LOVED “How to Hang a Witch”, but “Haunting the Deep” made it so I would die for Sam, the Descendants, Elijah, Jaxon, Sam‘s dad, & Mrs. Meriweather. Wish there were more books to this series. Love the history, the plots, the magic realism, & the characters SO much.

One things I love about both this book and “How To Hang A Witch”, is how the the author explores how the social mores of the time/culture effected the historical narrative.

I loved How to Hang a Witch and was super excited for a sequel but when I found out it dealt with ghosts from the Titanic I was skeptical. It seemed like a stretch. However my fears were unfounded. It was SO GOOD. And the afterword explaining the authors actual family history and how she tied it into the story made it even better. I hope there is more of this series to come!

MidnightBookGirl I do love these books too! 16pts! 4y

So much fun! This was the second in this YA series, and almost as great as the first one. Witches and ghosts (even some historically famous ghosts) and all the fun characters! The series could end here, but I for one hope that it doesn‘t. I would definitely read more!

Second in the series and just as fun. This one has a Titanic element as well witches, curses, and a Salem setting. Great read for this time of year. I hope she continues writing this series.

I‘ve started reading the sequel to How to Hang a Witch and I‘m loving it so far. I‘ve only gotten to chapter 13 but wow it‘s really good and I can‘t wait to read more!!
-
Edit: I finished the book and it was really good! It had plot twists and love and intense moments where I couldn‘t take my eyes off. I highly recommend this book!

So the beginning was a little rough for me, but I generally have a hard time with MCs who insist on denying the obvious. But, that might just YA for me. And it was worth it to push through because the plot picked up and I thoroughly enjoyed reading as these girls developed their friendships. The bad guy was on my list of suspects, but Mather muddied the waters sufficiently that it was still a fun surprise! Overall, a great read!

LA1 How many characters did you have to push through before it got really good? 5y

Forgot to review this. I didn‘t like it as much as How to Hang a Witch. Mainly because I didn‘t get WHY the bad guy(s) is/was doing what they were. I do love Samantha and Alice and Elijah and Jaxon. I love that little imaginary world in Salem. Looks like the author is beginning a boarding school series which I can get behind. Overall a pick, but not as good as the first. If you like the Titanic you probably will love this.

3.75. I enjoyed the Titanic theme. And sincerely, who wouldn‘t love a ghost cat named Broome?
