Maisie Dobbs
Maisie Dobbs: A Novel | Jacqueline Winspear
What do Hercule Poirot and Charlotte Gray have in common? It may be the wonderful Maisie Dobbs Lady Rowan Compton first met Maisie when, at thirteen, she went into service as a maid at her ladyships Belgravia mansion. A suffragette, Lady Rowan took the remarkably smart youngster under her wing and became her patron. She encouraged Maisie to study at Cambridge, and was aided in this by Maurice Blanche, a friend often retained as an investigator by the elite of Europe when discretion and results were required. It was he who first recognized Maisies intuitive gifts. The outbreak of war changed everything. Maisie left for France to train as a nurse, then served at the front, where she fell in love with a handsome young doctor. After the Armistice, in the spring of 1929, Maisie hangs out her shingle: M. Dobbs, Trade and Personal Investigations . Her very first case involves suspected infidelity but turns up something else, a tombstone with only a first nameVincent. And then she finds another. The deceased had lived on a cooperative farm called The Retreat, a well-regarded convalescent refuge for those grievously wounded in the war, ex-soldiers too shattered to resume normal life. When Lady Rowans son makes plans to join the reclusive community, Maisie hurriedly investigates and finds a disturbing mystery at its core whose resolution gives her the courage to confront the ghost that has haunted her for ten years.

Starts off with a somewhat inconsequential mystery which as Maisie dives deeper is more intricate.
As a first book, the author decided to invest half of it to Maisie's history with the Compton's and World War 1. This left the mystery part a little as an afterthought. I wonder how the other books in the series progress as the main backstory of the character has already been mined?
Will progress with the second as I do like Maisie Dobbs.

I really enjoyed getting to know Masie how she started out and all the characters that helped shape her life. So sad all the descriptions of the war and how it changed and effected so many lives including Masies. I will definitely be reading more in this series

This was between a pick and so-so for me. I really liked the beginning of the story and following Maisie along on her quest as a detective. I thought the jump back in time to tell her backstory was a bit clunky (and probably should have been a separate book, or the beginning of this book). And then the mystery part at the end seemed rushed. I'm not sure I'll continue with this series but I really did like all of the characters.

This is the first book in a long series that people keep recommending to me. Maisie is a clever woman working as a detective of sorts after WWI. She and almost everyone she knows are still dealing with the trauma they experienced during the war. As she investigates a retreat for wounded soldiers her own heartbreaking past comes to light. Her relationship with her mentor added an interesting depth. A great introduction to a series I will continue!

StaceGhost I love Maisie Dobbs. She‘s very human 2y

I see why there‘s a 50/50 split on whether someone likes or dislikes this book. For me it‘s a big hell yes. It was like a cozy cup of tea under a blanket, sitting in front of the fireplace. Audio. I was interested at the start, then sort of missed the going back in time (although it did say the year at the start and I sort of wasn‘t thinking, as I vaguely recall hearing the new date). From there to the end of the book, what I paid attention to was patchy. I was partly interested again for part of her time during the war. There were very few characters I remembered who they were when mentioned again later in the book. Cont in cmts.

LibraryCin I did like Simon and Maisie‘s relationship with her father, Frank. I got the idea that there was another mystery at the end of the book, but I really had no clue what was going on there – apparently (based on other reviews), there was a murder. Although it‘s considered a mystery, there is next to no time spent on a mystery in the book. Needless to say, I will not be continuing the series 2y

Finished my March #Bookspin. This was a mixed read for me. I became really engrossed in the story and the setting, while I found the writing uneven and the plotting way too neat and tidy. Maybe I‘m just not a cozy mystery person. 🤷🏻‍♀️ Might‘ve been a pick if not for the final bit about Simon which really put me at odds with Maisie. Perhaps that‘s further developed in the series but on its own, not a satisfying end note. 21//2 ⭐️s

MsMelissa This series improves as you move along, imho, although I did enjoy this first book. I wouldn‘t describe it as a cozy mystery though, so if you don‘t think you like it because it was too cozy for you, definitely stay away from actual cozy mysteries 😂🤣😂 3y

I liked it, but it did not make me want to stay up late to finish. The main storyline with the mystery takes place in 1929, but there‘s a huge chunk in the middle with Maisie‘s backstory, her time as a nurse during WWI, and how she ultimately ended up solving mysteries. Love the characters, especially Maisie and her dad. I was surprised by how heavy the end of the story was and I still feel that heaviness, even though I finished last night.

Maisie is a detective who was also a nurse in WW1. This first book in the series explains how she became both. It had both suspenseful and heartwarming parts, and Maisie is a likeable character, but it didn‘t really pull my interest in until near the end. I liked how the mystery was resolved; it was a light but solid mystery, but I‘m not sure at this point that I will read more of the series.

Overall, I found this predictable and, at times, boring. I mean, the parts about her in the war were interesting, but I really wish all that backstory was weaved in better instead of just dumped for several chapters. Also, I hate when mysteries have a whole chapter where the protagonist explains the how and why of everything.. makes me think the author thinks the reader is too dumb to figure it out themselves 🤷‍♀️

night_shift Also, found how easily it seemed Maisie got people to spill their guts unrealistic. And the singing.. guys, I listened to this and the person reading it sung and it was not good 😰 5y

Maisie and I got off to a slow start. For a while I was wondering whether or not I was reading the first in the series...I appreciated greatly the jump back in time for her full story. From there, I was enthralled and didn‘t want to put the book down. I haven‘t read much WWI-based fiction...I found myself thinking about Downton Abbey, too. Anyone else?? 🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️
