The Brothers Karamazov
The Brothers Karamazov | Dostoyevsky F.
13 posts | 11 read | 7 to read
The Brothers Karamazov, also translated as The Karamazov Brothers, is the final novel by the Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky. Dostoyevsky spent nearly two years writing The Brothers Karamazov, which was published as a serial in The Russian Messenger and completed in November 1880. The author died less than four months after its publication. The Brothers Karamazov is a passionate philosophical novel set in 19th century Russia, that enters deeply into the ethical debates of God, free will, and morality. It is a spiritual drama of moral struggles concerning faith, doubt, judgement, and reason, set against a modernizing Russia, with a plot which revolves around the subject of patricide. Dostoyevsky composed much of the novel in Staraya Russa, which inspired the main setting. Since its publication, it has been acclaimed as one of the supreme achievements in world literature.

1. Critical thinking!!!! End the teaching to test madness…. Telling students things as absolute fact and making them repeat verbiage 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫. They cannot think for themselves and are easily taken over by cultish type people. 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

(Day 20 - #Temptation)

*Dmitri Karamazov doesn‘t avoid temptation—he jumps into it full force. A sensualist who loves wine, women, and song, he soon finds himself in need of money. When Dmitri confronts his father over his inheritance, the door is flung wide open for distrust and violence.
Above right is the Optina Monastery, where Dostoevsky took refuge after the death of his son; below is Staraya Russa, the setting of the novel.

squirrelbrain You‘re still coming up with these oh-so-clever posts! ❤️ 5y
Cinfhen You make the novel seem so easy breezy but I‘m still super nervous to tackle the Russian classics😬 5y
gradcat @squirrelbrain That‘s very kind of you to say—thank you very much! And @Cinfhen : If I made it seem easy, I lied. It‘s slow reading—dense and thought-provoking. You simply cannot read these books without diving in deep. They are scary, but worth it if you‘re of a mind to tackle them. Don‘t be nervous—you‘ll be fine! ♥️ 5y

#weekendreads @rachelsbrittain

1. Tagged book and just about to start Drive Your Plough by Olga Tokarczuk

2. As in movie adaptation? Hmmm probably the 60s Grigory Kozintsev hamlet film

3. I have Instagram but don‘t post about books on it much, I like scrolling through other people‘s pretty pictures. I use goodreads but mainly for cataloging and reading challenges, I actually started on Litsy cause I was frustrated with goodreads

Tonton Enjoy Drive Your Plow😎Shout out to the translator!🌟 5y

Hurrah for Karamazov! I've been reading at breakfast to my daughter...now in high school...since kindergarten. This was our most difficult novel yet; we started on this one 300 days ago!

We really enjoyed it. There were the typical Russian literature struggles: every character has 3 names, and the action doesn't begin to develop until page 400 or so. This translation had good footnotes.

j9brown This book was really amazing but if I ever re-read it, I'm making myself a little index card character glossary to make it a little easier! 5y
Nute I am so fond of reading TOGETHER especially in family settings. I‘m feeling incredibly happy for you and your daughter. I‘d like to know what have been some favorite reads over the years? Welcome to Litsy! It‘s a warm and friendly community. I know that you will enjoy yourself here. I‘m looking forward to getting to know you.🙂 5y
davidjoseph @Nute We started with the Little House books. I loved getting to read Heidi and Pollyanna.
I asked my daughter, and she liked My Side of the Mountain, Tom Sawyer, The Call of the Wild, James Herriot & Twain's Joan of Arc.
We tackled The Hobbit & LOTR, Chronicles of Narnia, Dune, and some Dickens; Prince and the Pauper & Oliver Twist.

What an epic novel! Loved it. The fiction, the story telling, the psychology, philosophy, character development all is brilliant. I was scared to read it because of its length but now at the end, am in love with it. This was my first book by Dostoyevsky, I plan on reading more in the future.

Post---OAP Look into his novel The Idiot! Or The Possessed. Both are beautiful works. 5y

Well that was a slog of a listen, 3 weeks for 36+ hours, with basically two straight days at the end to catch up before it was due back at the library. I prefer Dostoyevsky to Tolstoy, but still, dense with a lot of unnecessary ramblings and expositions. #audiobook
