Bloom | Kevin Panetta
Now that high school is over, Ari is dying to move to the big city with his ultra-hip band, if he can just convince his dad, Nikos, to let him quit their struggling family bakery. Despite loving it as a kid, Ari cannot fathom a life wasting away his days over rising doughs and hot ovens. But in the midst of interviewing candidates for his replacement, Ari meets Hector, an easy-going guy who loves baking as much as Ari wants to escape it. As they become closer over batches of breads, love begins to bloom? that is, if Ari doesn't ruin everything.Writer Kevin Panetta and artist Savanna Ganucheau concoct a delicious recipe of intricately illustrated baking scenes and blushing young love, where the choices we make can have terrible consequences, but the people who love us can help us grow.

This was a great book, story and art. The illustrations were amazing throughout. I really really liked seeing the relationship bloom between Ari and Hector (meaning the flowers on the pages when their relationship grew and grew). Ari was a little annoying at first but he eventually grew on me. Super cute ending!

Absolutely gorgeous - both the writing and the images. So nice to read a well paced story that had time to breathe. I loved everything about this.

In the past four months, I‘ve read three books in which young queer people hang out on rooftops to chat. Do any of you know of similar examples? #LGBTQ

Soubhiville I did it. We‘d go out an upstairs window onto the roof above the porch. It was a pretty private place to, um... talk 😉. 2mo

Uncomplicated, strait-forward YA romance. Sweet, innocent, realistic young love. The montage-esque illustrations of the characters falling in crush set a lovely tone. What a nice book. 🥰

A very sweet, understated LGBT YA romance/coming-of-age graphic novel. Nice art, though nothing extraordinary. I did like the choice of color, though, using only shades of blue.
Also pictured, a roast beef and cheddar panini 😉

I often found BLOOM painful to read. Ari‘s emotional immaturity is just. too. real. At 18, he‘s unable to tell what he really wants from what he thinks he‘s supposed to want. He‘s bought into the cruel = cool mentality in his attempts to fit in, and he hurts a lot of people as he works past that. The creators do a great job with his arc, but damn. My soul ached the whole way through.

I have this habit at work of setting books aside as they get returned so I can read them. Then they pile up for a couple weeks, I realize I don‘t have time to read any of them, and I eventually put them back on the shelf. Why can‘t I just read ALL the books?! 😭😭😭😭

It‘s a sweet gay romance in #graphicnovel format, but I am not a fan of romance in general, so it was other attributes that kept me interested. What I loved most is the believable characterization, capturing the uncertainty and confusion of life after high school, and the weight of parental expectations. I also love the beautiful inkwash art, and all the yummy scenes of baking. #LGBTQ #YA #comics

I saw Kevin Panetta speak about this graphic novel recently and it finally came in at the library. Such a charming story about a guy working in his family bakery falling for a guy they hire to help out.

Definitely the kind of book that makes you HUNGRY too.

@teachingtheapocalypse and I had the chance to see Kevin Panetta at the @novateenbf, and I immediately wanted to read this book. Bloom centers on Ari, a recent high school graduate who is pulled between helping at his parents' bakery and pursuing his dreams of moving away with his band. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod The graphic novel is gorgeous, all in washes of blue, and the story of Ari (who is, quite frankly, a jerk at the beginning of the novel--Panetta said this himself!) and Hector, who Ari hires as his replacement at the bakery, is moving and believable. I loved Ari's parents and his friends (particularly as it becomes clear who his "true" friends are). 7mo

So sweet. Great story about discovering who you are and what makes you happy. It‘s about not trying so hard to fit in the way you think you should, but loving who you are, as you are.

A New Adult (bc I continue to believe that that tag should belong to more than just the adult romance market) m/m graphic romance novel with beautiful aqua-and-cream artwork and a storyline that involves trying to figure out who you want to be and what you want to do in life. And a reminder that teenagers can be assholes but still sweet and your friends can be total dicks to you. Hector made me think of my friend Brandon, a writer.

The eternal quandary: do I buy this for myself, read it, and then pass it on to the 13-year-old I think might enjoy it? Or do I buy it for her in the hopes that she‘ll loan it to me when she‘s done? 🤔🤓😋

This is such a cute story..
Ari wants to get out of his parents' bakery, wants to be a musician with his friends.. Until Hector comes to the bakery looking for a job, then nothing is certain anymore.
I loved the colour scheme in light blue and black 🖤

This book was so sweet & cute. It's something I would have told my best friend she should read because she would have loved it.

She died this past June. I miss her so much. We both love to read & used to talk about books all the time. She wanted us to start a BookTube channel because she thought our book discussions were funny. She liked to read the weirdest shit & was my absolute source for the best fanfic.

Sorry...just remembering her today...
