This is the first of the Penguin Little Clothbound Classics that I‘ve read and it won‘t be the last. I‘ve attended The Nutcracker many times but have, oddly, never read the story it is based on. I can say that I didn‘t enjoy the story as much as the ballet, but am still glad I read it. The other two stories in this book all deal with similar themes of imagination and seeing what isn‘t there/ghost stories.
This is a bizarre little book, possibly made more bizarre by translation. Am I glad I finally read it? Yes. Will it be on repeat in my holiday reading rotation? Probably not.
Merry Christmas Eve! I finished the other book I was reading yesterday which means I have time for one more Christmasy read before the holiday is passes. 😀🎄📚
1. 😂 No. I travel.
2. Snowflakes? Or those cute elf gnome things.
3. The OG Bing Crosby.

@Eggs - Thanks for the tag!
I sort of half assed this while commuting on the train.

My son loves nutcrackers & The Nutcracker. We get him a nutcracker every year.
This year I got him the one on the right which rotates and plays The Nutcracker Suite. My daughter got him the other bc she‘s starting college in a few weeks and will be studying Biomedical Science. It‘s a ‘Don‘t Forget Me‘ gift 😁
In 1892, Tchaikovsky's famous ballet, The Nutcracker, debuted. Because the ballet is set on Christmas Eve (and the hero is a nutcracker come to life), nutcrackers are still part of Christmas decor. Since my daughters and granddaughter danced in Nutcracker many years, it‘s an important part of Christmas🎄

❄️ excited for #jolabokaflod again this year!
❄️❄️ when I was 5 I wrote a secret letter to Santa for a nutcracker.
I told my mom about it on Christmas Eve. She procured a nutcracker the next day. Then she threw it out the window on the drive home so we could “find” the present Santa dropped out of his sleigh. It was the most magical experience.
I still collect nutcrackers and now have about 30. #wondrouswednesday @Eggs
All through the day of Christmas Eve Dr Stahlbaum‘s children had not been allowed into the dining room, much less into the drawing room opening out of it.

1.The dance of the sugar plum fairy, Carol of the bells, The first Noel, Good King Wenceslas!
2. Among Christians in India, plum cake at Christmas is a tradition, and I love the smell of that! My grandmother bakes a delish one and we used to visit her every Christmas, haven't done that in the last 2 years because we don't want to expose her to infection.
This version of the classic story The Nutcracker is illustrated by Michael Weply and is full of pop up images. This dimensional storybook would serve well as a dramatic reenactment in the classroom since The Nutcracker is often performed through acting and ballet. A website resource that contains many activities and information for conducting this reenactment is https://klsriley.com/2012/01/28/nutcracker-lessons-for-elementary-music/.
Nutcracker AU where he isn‘t royal but a door to door basket salesman... I‘m getting strong Saucepan man from The Magic Faraway Tree vibes... (he has a whole bunch of baskets on his back)
The three Christmas decorations that the library has are headed back into storage... hopefully we‘ll be able to locate them easily next December... (the house went missing one year before turning up halfway through the next in literally the last place we looked)
This book was amazing!! The illustrations, the history (1816) and the story. It was much longer than I anticipated but I think this one might be added to my holiday traditions.

This is a favorite ornament: a silver nutcracker with jointed arms and legs. He‘s a happy ‘guardian‘ of all the ornaments! I love all the details❣️

I also found a Maurice Sendak-illustrated Nutcracker at the book sale!
We had one of these when I was a little girl so I couldn‘t resist bringing it home with me when I saw it at Goodwill. I only remember my mom having it out for Christmas and New Year‘s Day. In case you aren‘t sure what it is, I included a clue. 😉
A day late for the prompt, but I saw the ballet version of the #nutcracker today.
This was the first time I saw a ballet performance and it was a little weird watching a stage production with no spoken dialogue
Pictures by the great Maurice Sendak. 😍
