Sadly, this book was a disappointment to me. I was hoping for a book about books. But it's not. It's more a drama llama and not even a creative one. Also I feel confused about the role of Jackie Kennedy. Her character could've been anyone, it was so replaceable... Guess one has be more interested in family dramas for this book...

LiljaPleasant Isn't there a movie? Actually wantes to watch that... Might not if that's such a drama jibber jabber... 3mo
Jari-chan @LiljaPleasant As far as I know the rights for the movie are sold. Maybe the movie will be better than the book? It sometimes goes that way. Also, you might get better along with the books topic since I guess you're maybe more interested in mother-child-relationship based themes than I am 😉 3mo

I only picked this book up because I was interested in the premise of a novelist who discovers that his editor is none other than Jackie Kennedy Onassis. The book started ok but got boring midway and drag on. I did like some of dialogue between Jackie and James, though sometimes it did make me cringe. The length of book felt too long, than what it should of been. The Editor is readable but forgettable. ⭐⭐⭐

Great premise but I was left wanting more- more depth, more character growth, more something. In the end this ended up being the type of book I will finish and never think about again. #24in48

Sorry for the bad picture- I was in a rush when I took it. 🙄
I really wanted to like this one but I found it really slow. It‘s ultimately about relationships and the parts with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis were interesting but there wasn‘t enough movement in the plot for me. I even found myself not caring about the ending which is pretty rare for me.

Anna40 Picked this up at the library yesterday but put it back on the shelf. Interesting to read your review today :) 4mo

I really wanted to enjoy this #audiobook I borrow on #Libby. I found it quite dull. There just wasn‘t anything for me to get excited about. At times, the author seemed a bit bored with his own story, attempting to jazz it up with extra adjectives. It wasn‘t enough for me, despite having loved Lily and the Octopus. This is 1 of 10 for #BFC #BFCr2 for me!

I picked up this book because I loved the premise of this story about a novelist who‘s editor is Jackie. Unfortunately, it fell a little flat for me. I thought I would like the scenes of the book featuring Jackie O but I liked those the least. I was intrigued by the relationship between the main character and his mother but that didn‘t get examined enough for my preference.

I‘m giving this a pick, but only just. Full of quirk, quips and Jackie Kennedy 🕶 it was a fun ride. But I felt there were too many things thrown into the story, some of which were really big serious things, and it didn‘t quite stir up the poignancy I think it should have. ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️

Read it.

That‘s the takeaway from this review. ☺️

But if you‘d like more details, I was impressed with the character development and writing style in this book, the first I‘ve read by Rowley. Jackie O felt like a developed character, not a caricature (which was one of my pet peeves about The Dinner List). I breezed through the book quickly but at several points slowed myself down to appreciate a beautiful phrase or idea. An enjoyable read!!

I did not like this book despite really wanting to. For the first 60 or so pages, i was hooked, but it‘s like someone else finished the story. I didn't like that the author just made stuff up about Jackie O. This book reads like a mad lib, with random bits of information thrown in here and there just to get the book to the 300 page limit. It really felt like the author had a good idea for the premise and then phoned the rest in.

I‘m about 1/3 of the way through this book and not sure if i want to finish it. I had hoped the book would contain an author‘s note to describe his research or connection to Jackie O to sort of authenticate this character. I find myself wondering whether this is an accurate portrayal, and I‘m wondering if the book would have been better served by having the editor be a fictional former First Lady instead of Jackie O. Thoughts?

A Good Read-but then I'm a huge Jackie O fan-I named my first born after her☺️ Great for Mother's day-James writes a kind of fictional book about mothers and sons aka James and his estranged mother. The editor, Jackie O, draws the whole story out of James, not to shame his mother, but to honor her. James book evolves through family secrets and discoveries. Jackie imparts her wisdom to bring his book to fruition. Spoiler-you might need Kleenex!

For long swaths of Steven Rowley's The Editor, I was thinking, "This is fine. I'm not in love with it, but it's good." I can't quite pinpoint exactly what was merely okay about it, what kept it for reaching any sort of height for me. Then, in the last section of the book, I was just swept away by my emotional reactions. (continued in comments)

UnabridgedPod Some large part of it is the notion of saudade, of a longing for what is past (or for what isn't ACTUALLY past but what we imagine as the past). It's the feeling, I think, that I've always had when considering Gatsby the novel (and Gatsby the character). Anyway, I had to be patient, but I ultimately REALLY appreciated The Editor. 7mo

this book was an amazing run of all the feels there are to feel. To begin with the voice was perfection for me. It‘s exactly my kind of self deprecating, sarcastic humor style that I imagine myself writing in. If you love Jaqueline Kennedy Onassis you‘ll love this book. It was charming and witty. What I found so fantastic is that Jackie didn't eclipse James. She‘s the perfect addition with her poise, grace and sophistication. There is also an immense sadness about her and instead of being swallowed up and consumed by grief, she and the story are empathetic and clever. Rowley took a risk using someone famous, she could have stolen the scenes away from James thus making him more of a supporting character, but this doesn't happen at all.

I chose “pick” because I felt like it deserved more than “so-so” , but I was not blown away. I love the feel the author gave me for Mrs. Onassis and it seemed spot on. Some of the plot was a little convoluted and I didn‘t appreciate the main character‘s indiscretions. A decent read, overall.

I absolutely loved this! I laughed, I cried... I didn‘t want it to end (but I hastened its ending by staying up way too late!). Set in 1992-94, this book is both meticulously and yet effortlessly researched, culminating in a biopic of Jackie O‘s time as an editor through the lens of a new author working not only on his semi-autobiographical novel but also in his own relationships. This is my first experience with the author, but won‘t be my last!
