Nikki is a first generation daughter of Indian immigrants in London. She is separated by social class from the Punjabi community until she starts teaching classes at the Temple. There she learns that there is much more to these traditional women than she realized. Over the course of the novel Nikki learns from these women and comes to feel that she is also a part of this community.

#GratefulReads Day 16: This was a case of #ThoughtYouWouldntLikeButDid. This is the perfect poolside read: plot-driven, lots of funny dialogue, story-within-a-story format, death, mystery, and erotic stories. I am glad that this is my first Singapore read for #WomenReadWomen2019. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-kpZ

What I Loved: The widows. They were adorable.
How I Felt: A bit confused when the thriller aspect came around, but it was a good addition to the story.
To Read or Not To Read: As long as you are ok with a bit of erotica mixed into your fiction/thriller, this was worth reading. It's a bit of a leisurely stroll through a story, not fast paced until the end.

I was underwhelmed. This seems to be a book with an identity crisis. It's like Jaswal tried to make it too many things, and only succeeded in not doing any of those things really well. The erotica didn't shock me, but it did use terminology that I find cringeworthy. The pacing was erratic and I never felt invested in the outcome of the widows' lives, which is a shame. There's a good story here, trying to get out, but it never quite comes together.

Ashley_Nicoletto I really enjoyed this one! I‘m sorry to see it wasn‘t for you. Wasn‘t this one of your TBR recs? 4mo
DGRachel @Ashley_Nicoletto Yes, it was, which is the only reason I finished it. I didn‘t *hate* it, but I didn‘t really enjoy it. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 4mo

This was a bit of a surprise for me. The main storyline was what I expected, but it also contains actual erotic stories, & a rather suspenseful mystery element. What I really liked here was watching the MC become aware of her privilege as a "liberal westerner" within the Punjabi community. She grew up thinking of her family as really traditional, but next to her students they're not & once she understands that she finds her place in the community.

How is it already time for a new round of #TailoredBookRecommendations?!? I don‘t have space in my August schedule to read any of the books from Q3 in print, thanks to a bunch of non-renewable library books, so I tried Daisy Jones on audio at worked and HATED it. So, I switched to the tagged book, listened for two hours, and I‘m not loving it. 😭 I will finish it, but I‘m definitely disappointed. 😔 Debating on trying the other on audio.

Laughterhp Is this subscription worth it? I already have so many books on my TBR I feel like I wouldn‘t read the books they suggest, but I‘m so curious about it. 4mo
DGRachel @Laughterhp I think it is. I have the recommendation only version, so I can buy the books in whatever format works best for me, rather than the version where they send you hard cover books. I haven't read all of the books recommended, yet, but I try to get through at least one before the next round is released. My bibliologist is also really responsive. You get to provide feedback on each set of recs, and my bibliologist takes everything (cont'd) 4mo
DGRachel ...I say into account and provides recs based on my shifting mood and feedback. She really helps expand my TBR into books that I had never heard of and several of the recs have been spot on and perfect. I'm just struggling with the latest set of recs, but that's not her fault. 4mo

I read this at the same time as 'The Secret Lives of the Amir Sisters' which I think was a mistake. There are similar elements with both books which made it hard not to compare. And in my opinion Secret Lives was better. Having said that its a good read.

seaves582 It make me feel good you rated this the same as me. I read this not right, but close after another Indian book - The Golden Son. This one just didn‘t hold up. (edited) 4mo
Victoria_Clyne @seaves582 that's exactly how I felt. It makes me wonder if I would have enjoyed it more if I had read it first. 4mo

This book has a great premise that I think suffered from having a second great premise that sort of overshadowed it. Honestly, I think the author should have written two books rather than try to force both the lighthearted “Punjabi widows gone wild!” and the rather heavy discussion of religious extremism and murder into one. I liked both, but it was just jarring to read them together and neither was as fully explored as they should‘ve been. 3/5 ⭐️

“Erotic” is basically the opposite of a buzzword for me, but the plot of this one appealed to me when it first came out, and I‘ve been told that the steamy bits are minimal and easy to skim past if you have zero interest in reading that sort of thing 😬💜⚪️🖤 #nowreading

I want to give it 3.5 stars. It was interesting enough for me to finish. I wasn‘t thinking about it when I put it down. I didn‘t care for the characters beyond the pages. Idk, maybe there was too much going on or too many characters. There were moments where it was a solid 4 star - but then she lost me. I feel after reading it that reading it that reading is kind of boring and just does it‘s job. I need a page turner next!!

I am on pg 86 of 344. I have one observation so far. The director of the program has described how the women all look and it was all very judgmental. Where Nikki never has described their looks and it feels more accepting of who they are regardless of what they look like. Also the first real story by Manjeet was told of the young girl with the mole and her meetings with 2 potential husbands. It was such a lovely story. I‘m hooked!!

I enjoyed this selection, but I wasn't blown away. A fun premise highlighted some important issues facing Indian women in their communities and I was invested in some of the characters despite what I felt was a lack of depth in the writing style.
