Wow!!! This started out slow and ended with a bang… or more accurately a series of bangs, like a spectacular fireworks display. I LOVE Karina (so tortured, clever, and resourceful—more than she realizes) and Malik isn‘t too bad either. So many twists I didn‘t see coming! I put the second book on hold right away. Excited for more Dedele and Afua 😁

Also, JKR is awful but there were clear HP references in this book and I am here for it. 😂

The world building was a bit hard for me to get into as the magic system didn‘t make sense to me but this book was still good! CRAZY twist that I did not see coming, truly horrendous but I probably won‘t read the sequel.

I made it 34% of the way through and I'm not invested in the characters. I feel like the plot is generally predictable, based on the way it's set up. This would be a great book for people who like YA that has magic!

Wow, what a ride! This book is packed with adventure and magic! There's so much complexity to this world. Clearly set up for a sequel, which I definitely will be reading!

I am not exactly sure how the title really fits in with the books, however, the cover is gorgeous and the story is entertaining.

Awesome book!

I think it was around page 20 that I first thought, "there is a LOT going on in this book." There is indeed, and every chapter is packed with rich ideas and people and settings and details. I loved it, and will be looking forward to the next installment in Malik and Karina's stories.

It took a bit of getting into but once it got going I got sucked into the world. Already looking forward to the sequel and seeing the characters grow!

This book was a lot of fun! I had some predictions, but also some surprises! Chock full of all the fantasy elements we love: magic, magical creatures, tournament, betrayal, love (tho very PG), wishes, royalty, & loads of characters! 4 ⭐️ I co-host an IG book club and this was July‘s pick!

oh my God I loved this...all of it! The characters and the world and the conflicts and damn everyone is lying and killing people! It was SO GOOD. I'm incredibly impressed with the writing from a debut author as well!

This cover is gorgeous. I just love it. I loved the Western African Folklore in it. The challenges were great. The plot twists were well done. I didn‘t like that Karina didn‘t have much reason behind why she wanted her mother resurrected. Overall a good story. Can‘t wait for the sequel.

A great debut from Roseanne A. Brown. Inspired by West African folklore, this fantasy sets a princess and a refugee against one another. Each could benefit from killing the other (as long as denying their mutual attraction is possible), and the threat of murder, amidst politics and intrigue, permeates their story, keeping me guessing at how it would end. Brought home two books on my lunch hour. My #botm was delivered. And while shelving some YA books this morning, I came across the other and was very intrigued.

Library just opened for 30 min browsing! I missed it. Looking forward to reading!
