The Cask of Amontillado
The Cask of Amontillado | Edgar Allan Poe

"The Cask of Amontillado" (sometimes spelled "The Casque of Amontillado") is a short story, written by Edgar Allan Poe and first published in the November 1846 issue of Godey's Lady's Book. The story is set in a nameless Italian city in an unspecified year (possibly sometime during the eighteenth century) and concerns the deadly revenge taken by the narrator on a friend who he claims has insulted him. Like several of Poe's stories, and in keeping with the 19th-century fascination with the subject, the narrative revolves around a person being buried alive in this case, by immurement.

@Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks (thanks for the tag, too! 😘)

Enjoying rereading some Poe and am still listening to TALES OF MYSTERY AND IMAGINATION by the Alan Parson's Project. Here's another fave:

RaeLovesToRead Or maybe the Eurovision entry from last year... Poe Poe Poe Poe Poe Poe 🤣 (Austria) haha 9mo
Bookwomble Lou Reed's album The Raven might pique your interest: it was the music for his stage play POEtry, which also has the tagged accompanying book. 🙂 9mo
Amiable I just finished a book and haven't decided what to read next! We're leaving tomorrow for a trip so I'm mulling whether to just go with the e-reader or also pack a lightweight paperback. 9mo

Aimeesue This may freak people out a little, but I don‘t really listen to music. 😂 9mo
AnnCrystal Thanks for tagging me 😉👍. 9mo
Liz_M @Amiable Always pack one paper book in case the ereader crashes and can't be easily rebooted (I had this happen in an airport once) 9mo
dabbe @Aimeesue I really don't either anymore. I prefer rain or blizzard sounds. Anything soothing that helps me relax and focus while I'm reading. But ... every once in a while, I rock out. 🤩 9mo

After waiting 11+ weeks to borrow this from the library I finally got my hands on an ebook copy and I‘m so glad I did! Definitely worth the wait! Made sure to read it a few times through and it got better and better each time.
Creepy. Excellent short dark horror story.
Will definitely be getting a physical copy to add to my home library.

Others may question my decorating before the winter break, but my students are excited to become CSI investigators!

JewelsEnd Wow. Nice work! I would've loved to have had a teacher like you back in school. So important to get kids interested in reading. Not as popular as it once was it seems. 6y
WriterAtHeart Thanks @JewelsEnd ! I certainly try to keep my class fun. I teach high school and so many kids come in thinking they hate reading, so I try to bring it alive to help them. 😁 6y

Happy (pretend it's still but not really) Friday!
1. Tagged--there's something about leading a man to his death with the promise of a drink that ups the creep factor.
2. When the weather and mood are right, Moscow Mule. There's a bar in SLC that serves a Hibiscus Mule that is delish!
3. JT! But I also love dancing to Sia, Pink, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga...no shame.
4. Cart--but I like the sound of buggy!

SpeculativeFemale Hibiscus mule sounds awesome! 7y
AndreaReads @SpeculativeFemale It is the perfect summer (adult) drink! 7y
GarthRanzz Which bar serves that? Sounds like something I‘d like to try. Nothing like finding a good place to be an adult in a juvenile state. 😉 7y
AndreaReads 😂 @GarthRanzz Purgatory Bar just off 7th South! My sister and I meet up for brunch there every so often! (edited) 7y
GarthRanzz I‘ll have to keep it in mind when I am in the valley. Which I am today but we‘re up at Alpha Coffee watching the snow coming down the canyon. Beautiful, blustery day. 7y

Of the Poe I‘ve read so far, The Cask of Amontillado is a definite favorite 🖤

I forgot to share my other Poe stuff. The two stamps I got there and the trading card the park ranger gave me. Edgar Allan Poe on a trading card, I wonder how he would react to that.

"I continued to smile in his face, and he did not understand that I was now smiling at the thought of what I planned for him, at the thought of my revenge."

It was a short story that kept my eyes darting across the page wanting to know what happens next. The ending was dark and satisfying.

My favourite work by EAP! Read it first in college many moons ago, was delighted to find it in my horror compendium! The psychology behind this piece is fascinating. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, just read it! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟 #deweysreadathon #booktober #horror #collector #compendium #edgarallanpoe #historian #historynerd #yyjbooklovers #bookloversunite #favourite

My first thought went to Montressor of my favorite Poe story, Cask of Amontillado. Illustration by Rackham. #bestnarrator.#octphotochallenge

BookHermit Rackham is one of my all time favourite illustrators. His Mother Goose is a touchstone if my early reading years. 8y

Y'all I found Poe beer!! 💀💀

Has anyone tried these? They look tasty. 🍻

#BooksandBrews #BookishBrews #BooksandBooze

LeahBergen I'd like to try the Annabel Lee White 8y
BookishFeminist @LeahBergen Yea that one looks good! I'm interested in The Cask too since it's a dark beer, but I don't think I'd be a fan of the other since I'm not into IPAs. 8y
MrsV Is it wrong of me to only want them for the bottles, and not to drink? 8y
See All 45 Comments
BookishFeminist @MrsV I don't think there's anything wrong with that. They're really cool looking and would be great makeshift flower vases. 8y
readinginthedark Yeah, I'm with @MrsV . Not a beer person. If they had it as a cider or soda... 8y
MLRio That's awesome! What's the brewery? 8y
DiruVamp Those are fabulous!! I don't drink beer but I would totally buy those for the bottles alone! 8y
TheLondonBookworm Booze and books- I'm so there 8y
Melkyl I love both beer and Poe. I want these 😋 8y
DreesReads I want!! 8y
MrBook 😳 Oh myyy! Must tryyy! 8y
BookishFeminist @readinginthedark @DiruVamp yes! The bottles are perfection. There's a fourth too that they were sold out of so I couldn't snap a photo. 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @SureAsMel The first three are BW Beer Works in Baltimore, and the last one is New Holland Brewery! 8y
BookishFeminist @TheLondonBookworm Right? The perfect combination! 8y
BookishFeminist @Melwilk @AudreyMorris I did too so I bought! 😊 8y
BookishFeminist @MrBook Right?! I'll be trying The Cask tonight once I can get it home and chilled. They look seriously good! 8y
k.reads The Poet! One of my faves! 8y
BookishFeminist @k.reads Is it?! Yay! I didn't get that one this time but might next trip. What's it like?? 8y
k.reads @BookishFeminist Yeah! It's a nice creamy stout that's a bit chocolaty and coffee-y. A good winter-time beer (or any time😉). 8y
Alisnazzy Oh hell yeah!!! 8y
MrBook Must know your thoughts 😆🙌🏻! 8y
Bookies I tried them once. Nevermore. 8y
prowlix @k.reads I second that The Poet is an excellent oatmeal stout and one of my favorites that's available year round. Beer advocate rates it 91 if that helps 8y
BookishFeminist @k.reads @prowlix Ooo that sounds good! I love oatmeal stout and was really tempted to grab it but it's like 100° here and went straight for the shandies instead. ? Will def grab on my next beer run though! 8y
BookishFeminist @Ambrosnazzy Yes my thoughts exactly! 8y
BookishFeminist @MrBook Thoughts will happen. Gonna pair that shit up right 💯💯 8y
BookishFeminist 👀 I see you @Bookies. I know what you did there. 8y
MrBook 😁😆👏🏻👍🏻🙌🏻! Niiiiice! 8y
Shortstack Holy crap!!! I need these in my life immediately!!! 😍😍😍 8y
Shortstack Side note: I Goodreads stalked you and noticed you haven't read Handmaids Tale. Is that correct? If so I changed my mind. You need to read that immediately not A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness. Like seriously. Immediately. 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack Oh I've read it! It's my favorite! 8y
OrangeMooseReads Woo woo New Holland! Sorry got excited for a Michigan product. I need to find the others. Beer hunt coming soon. 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack I started rereading it a year or so ago. I wonder if when I stopped it didn't compute that I'd already read it? Idk goodreads can be weird and I'm not very good at updating it with stuff I've read in the past. 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack also I worship at the alter of Margaret Atwood so this would be sacrilege for me and would be on my own personal list of #litsydamnation 8y
BookishFeminist @OrangeMooseReads Good luck! I'm in the DC area and the Poe beers are out of baltimore, so I gave no idea how widely available they are nationally. If you try them let me know! 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist Good! I was shocked to see it as a TBR on Goodreads! Such an incredible book!! One of my all time favorites!! 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack I am too! I'm gonna reread it again soon and imprint it on my soul again so that should change shortly 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack also even if I hadn't read it I would have absorbed it through osmosis by now- I no joke have 5 copies of that book, including a personally signed and inscribed first edition first printing with "to Sarah, nolite te batardes carborundum" ? 8y
BookishFeminist Carborundorum*** 🙄 autocorrect 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist Damn! I'm jealous! I would love a personally signed first edition!! 😍😍😍 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack Right?! @becausetrains did well for my birthday last year and tracked one down since he knew I would be meeting her 😍 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist You've definitely got a good one there! Also, I would so love to meet her! 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack She's amazing! I was a total creep when I met her. Not at the signing itself, but she was at Book Riot Live which is where I met her, so every once in a while I would nonchalantly run into her in the bathroom or something and make it awkward af 8y
BookishFeminist @Shortstack We did temporary tattoos with Litographs where everyone would get one phrase from the opening chapter of handmaids tale- I was there getting mine when she was there getting hers and I was stuttering being like OMG I LOVE YOU CAN I SHAKE YOUR HAND 😍 and then made it awkward by shaking it while she was still letting the tattoo set and nearly knocked her washcloth over 🙄 we chatted for a bit after but omg embarrassing lol 8y
Shortstack @BookishFeminist Lol! I probably would have been just as awkward if it makes you feel better! 😂😂😂 8y
