102 Minutes: The Unforgettable Story of the Fight to Survive Inside the Twin Towers | Kevin Flynn, Jim Dwyer
24 posts | 23 read | 36 to read
"102 Minutes does for the September 11 catastrophe what Walter Lord did for the Titanic in his masterpiece, A Night to Remember . . . Searing, poignant, and utterly compelling."Rick Atkinson, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of An Army at Dawn Hailed upon its hardcover publication as an instant classic, the critically acclaimed New York Times bestseller 102 Minutes is now available in a revised edition timed to honor the tenth anniversary of the attacks of September 11, 2001. At 8:46 a.m. that morning, fourteen thouosand people were inside the World Trade Center just starting their workdays, but over the next 102 minutes, each would become part of a drama for the ages. Of the millions of words written about this wrenching day, most were told from the outside looking in. New York Times reporters Jim Dwyer and Kevin Flynn draw on hundreds of interviews with rescuers and survivors, thousands of pages of oral histories, and countless phone, e-mail, and emergency radio transcripts to tell the story of September 11 from the inside looking out. Dwyer and Flynn have woven an epic and unforgettable account of the struggle, determination, and grace of the ordinary men and women who made 102 minutes count as never before. 102 Minutes is a 2005 National Book Award Finalist for Nonfiction.

It‘s impossible to rate a book on 9/11. It‘s worth the read but if you are only going to read one, I‘d recommend The Only Plane in the Sky or Fall and Rise.

A really good, sad book. It highlights how much was happening within a short time and in a relatively small space. And also how so many lives could have been saved if different decisions about building and communications had been made before the tragedy occurred. Unbelievable that 20 years has passed.

TiredLibrarian This was riveting. A difficult read, but very important. 3y

Bk4 of the #WinterGames for #TeamNutcracker is finished. This was a #TBR read that was from #NFNov When you hear about the WTC you hear about the NYPD & FDNY but there were a lot of ordinary people doing brave things that day. Most of the office workers that could be saved were already out of the buildings or well on the way. This book is the story of ordinary people helping each other on the worst day of their life. 16pts+6 #PointsTotal-354

Reviewsbylola Great book but so hard to read. 4y
marleed I watched an episode interview around the first Anniversary for 9/11. A child whose father was killed that day gave a heartbreaking interview I still think about. Her (it could have been a him - that I don‘t recall) father was not a first responder but she was sure he would have been one with the heroes yet she only heard first responders held up as heroes. It still makes me sad to think of how this child felt alone in grief. 4y

Taking a break from the schmaltz for the #WinterGames & finishing this #TBR before the hubby goes to the library for me tomorrow. This book is both heartbreaking & fascinating with a dash of infuriating.Did you know they built the towers with only 3stairwells bunched together compared with the 9 in the EmpireStateBuilding? To make more money with greater office space. That decision cost so many lives that day.😢 #TeamNutcracker 1pt+7 #PointsTotal-330

My next #NFNov read is about another American tragedy, this time in NYC. I‘m already incredulous at the lack of planning, communication between rescuers & the ridiculous decision by the Mayor to put the OEM bunker at the foot of one of the highest profile targets in the country. #TIL-the animosity between the Fire Dept & the NYPD meant that while the Police helicopters could see the extent of the fire, they failed to advise the Fire Chiefs.

Bk6 of my #LibraryHaul is another #NFNov pick. As an Australian, I can‘t begin to understand Americans feelings towards what happened that morning. I do know how it felt for me to be watching the live video as the 2nd plane hit then as the towers fell. All those brave first responders who went in as people were running out. This is the story told by the people inside the tower, those trying to help & those struggling to survive.

vivastory A similar book, one of my favorites of the year is 4y
Cinfhen I listened to an amazing audio this year that was so comprehensive yet soooooo intimate. If you can find the audio I highly recommend 4y

I‘ve seen numerous documentaries on 9/11 but most of the stories are told from people outside the towers. Reading about the bravery and sacrifice within is a whole different ballgame. What‘s even more upsetting is realizing how unprepared both the Police and Firemen of New York were and how naive everyone was, thinking the Twin Towers were indestructible. I highly recommend this book. There are parts which some may find disturbing, however.

It seems an appropriate day to post about this book that I read a few years ago. It‘s difficult to get through, knowing what happens. But it‘s a labor of love and it‘s very well written. #911 #neverforget #ilovenewyork

The girls and I made our first loaf of challah the other day in honor of Rosh Hashanah and it was so good that I decided to make two more loaves this morning. 😍

This is the first time I‘ve read this book on audio. It‘s devastating and difficult to listen to. 💔 It‘s the best book I‘ve read as far as conveying what it was like to be in the towers on the morning of 9/11. Highly recommend.

So despite me having a ten hour work day ahead of me, a friend has insisted that she MUST speak to me today. So here I am, meeting her an hour before work, and she‘s late. 🙄🙄 I Somehow managed to misplace the other book I‘m working on so thought I‘d start on this. I‘m not sure if it counts as #truecrime?

This is an amazing book. It talks about what it was like to escape and to be trapped inside the towers. It was also interesting to learn about the short comings in the construction of the towers that led to more tragedy.

#sizzlinsummerbooks Day 4: red/white/blue @Tiffy_Reads

I had the hardest time with this prompt. Couldn't think of the name of the one book that came to mind, it was a 9/11 memoir that was fabulous. So I trolled my stacks looking for any covers or titles that fit the prompt, and I still came up empty. Picked this one cause it sounds like a good book, honestly can't be sure if I've read it or not. It fits the challenge though.

Cinfhen I'm obsessed with 9/11 books! Need to check this out! 7y

Intense to the nth degree. I felt a bit nauseated while reading the events of 9/11. It's hard to reconcile such devastation and loss of life and no retaliation to punish those responsible.

I remember 9/11 vividly, even though I'm an Aussie.I was lying in bed watching tv, when the hubby came in the room & said, "turn it over to Ch9 late news, somethings happening in New York". We both sat here with open mouths, watching it all unfold (it was about 11pm here) and saw the 2nd plane hit, then the pentagon & the last hijacked plane. We stayed up all night just holding hands & watching the worst horror since WWII streaming live on our tv.

shawnmooney This was a great book: the author's interview on NPR's Fresh Air at the time of publication was even more riveting. I don't know if it can be found online anymore or not. 8y
