Wednesday Wars
Wednesday Wars | Gary D Schmidt
In this Newbery Honor-winning novel, Gary D. Schmidt offers an unforgettable antihero. The Wednesday Wars is a wonderfully witty and compelling story about a teenage boy's mishaps and adventures over the course of the 1967-68 school year in Long Island, New York. Meet Holling Hoodhood, a seventh-grader at Camillo Junior High, who must spend Wednesday afternoons with his teacher, Mrs. Baker, while the rest of the class has religious instruction. Mrs. Baker doesn't like Holling--he's sure of it. Why else would she make him read the plays of William Shakespeare outside class? But everyone has bigger things to worry about, like Vietnam. His father wants Holling and his sister to be on their best behavior: the success of his business depends on it. But how can Holling stay out of trouble when he has so much to contend with? A bully demanding cream puffs; angry rats; and a baseball hero signing autographs the very same night Holling has to appear in a play in yellow tights! As fate sneaks up on him again and again, Holling finds Motivation--the Big M--in the most unexpected places and musters up the courage to embrace his destiny, in spite of himself.

Happy First Wednesday of October! Thanks to everyone who played last week 🙏🏻🙏🏻

🎃 Some of mine were Jasmine from Aladdin, Coraline, Tooth Fairy, 1950s poodle skirt, cowgirl, Tinkerbell. My girls have been jellybean bag, night sky, maple tree, dalmations, undead hippie, witch, ghost, among others…
🎃🎃 I usually get real pumpkins and bronze mums for the front porch.

An uplifting YA novel I liked but did not love until the end. Focuses on Holling Hoodhood, a 7th grader in 1967-8, as he is exposed to Shakespeare, the reality of war in Vietnam and the growing flower child movement. Its primary focus is, however, the generational clashes common to this period as both Holling and his sister seek escape from their overbearing father.
I am surprised this Newbury winner has not been adapted for film.

I‘m not a big YA fan, but this book is great! The story is told by a 7th grader during the 1967-68 school year - Shakespeare, rats, cream puffs, the Vietnam War, family dynamics, sports, duck and cover drills. What‘s not to love? A very enjoyable audiobook.

DNF The Wednesday Wars
I must be missing something because so many people love this book. Not me, maybe I didn't understand the humor. The repetitiveness got on my nerves.

3⭐ Lily's Crossing
Lily was a brat start off with, however, it did improve and I enjoyed the story overall.

Disappointed in this set, on the the next pair.

Book 14 #MGMarch #middlegrademarch This has been on my TBR back burner for a while... ( I read Okay for Now a few years back.) I thoroughly enjoyed the setting, narration, and characters-taking the reader back to the late 60‘s. A heartwarming coming of age story from a 7th grade boy‘s point of view.

Finished this audiobook on my walk today. It‘s #21 on my #BookSpinBingo card. I really enjoyed this book because I felt very connected to it. It‘s about a 7th grader in 1967-68. I was an 8th grader that year. I was developing my own opinions about many of the historical things that happened that year - the deaths of Martin Luther King and Bobby Kennedy and the Vietnam War. I am even inspired to read some Shakespeare!

Just started “The Wednesday Wars” by Gary D. Schmidt, one of my #BookSpinBingo reads. It‘s about a 7th grader in 1967. I was in 8th grade in 1967, so close enough. The late 60‘s references are really fun. His older sister listens to The Monkees and wants to be a flower child. I was really into The Monkees in 1967! Anyway, it‘s cool!

Historical fiction. This book is the story of a boy who learns about the writings of Shakespeare and the impact they have on him. The main character does not practice a religion so he must stay with his teacher for the rest of the day who makes him read Shakespeare. The authors use of comedy and an uplifted tone throughout the book helps children how holing grows throughout the book.

What a completely unexpected delight! The book starts off with a 7th grader who thinks his teacher hates him. From there a boy who discovers Shakespeare, the power of kindness and standing up to bullies, first crushes, and finding yourself, all against the backdrop of the Vietnam war and the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and MLKJ. It‘s a surprisingly powerful little gem and Mrs. Baker will forever be one of my favorite literary teachers now.

I just finished this absolutely wonderful book. It follows a 7th grade boy during 1967-68 and his friends, family and especially a teacher/mentor. It‘s the Vietnam War, Shakespeare, cream puffs, rats and just finding out the person you‘re meant to be. I absolutely loved it and the Shakespeare references. (I‘m trying to be clever and illustrate it with a photo I took of Juliet‘s balcony in Verona last year.) Read this one, please.

This was such a pleasant, poignant YA book, set in the 1960s. The teacher and student friendship/mentorship is the heart of the story, but not in a sentimental way—and there are beautiful moments with family members and friends, as well. Never has a book made me crave cream puffs so passionately (and fear escaped pet rats so fiercely!). Also inspired me to brush up on my Shakespeare.

InnerSavvy It was a surprisingly good read. I enjoyed its sequel too. 6y

I adore St Bernards so for me this was just an excuse to post a pic of one 😁 for a future pet name I‘d choose Holling. St Bernards are described as “loving, gentle, and eager to please” and Holling does spend most of the book trying to please everyone he knows. And he‘s sweet. I love the sound of a brand-new bottle of Coke when you pry the lid off and it starts to fizz. Whenever I hear that sound, I think of roses, and of sitting together with someone you care about, and of Romeo and Juliet waking up somewhere and saying to each other, Weren't we jerks? And then having all that be over. That's what I think of when I hear the sound of a brand-new bottle of Coke being opened.

Never read this gem before placing it on the list of choices for summer reading, but I'm glad I did. It follows a year in Holling Hoodhood's life. Specifically, the year he was in seventh grade. He would face many foes—Mrs. Baker, Doug Swieteck's brother, and William Shakespeare—and grow through the connections he made along the way. All of this happened in 1967 with the Vietnam War, MLK's death, & other events in the background. #bookisholympics
