Furies of Calderon
Furies of Calderon | Jim Butcher
For a thousand years, the people of Alera have united against the aggressive and threatening races that inhabit the world, using their unique bond with the furies - elementals of earth, air, fire, water, and metal. But now, Gaius Sextus, First Lord of Alera, grows old and lacks an heir. Ambitious High Lords plot and maneuver to place their Houses in positions of power, and a war of succession looms on the horizon." "Far from city politics in the Calderon Valley, the boy Tavi struggles with his lack of furycrafting. At fifteen, he has no wind fury to help him fly, no fire fury to light his lamps. Yet as the Alerans' most savage enemy - the Marat - return to the Valley, he will discover that his destiny is much greater than he could ever imagine." Caught in a storm of deadly wind furies, Tavi saves the life of a runaway slave named Amara. But she is actually a spy for Gaius Sextus, sent to the Valley to gather intelligence on traitors to the Crown, who may be in league with the barbaric Marat horde. And when the Valley erupts in chaos - when rebels war with loyalists and furies clash with furies - Amara will find Tavi's courage and resourcefulness to be a power greater than any fury - one that could turn the tides of war.

Best fictional friend groups/squads

They may be from an underrated series but you can‘t go wrong with the friendship between Tavi and Max.

Thank you for the #BookishQuestions, @Clwojick and thank you for the tag, @Blueberry 😁

1. Fantasy (both high fantasy and urban) and science fiction.
2. Mystery.
3. Romance, nonfiction.
4. Urban fantasy.
5. “The Devil in the White City”. Read this for a book club and liked it much more than I expected.
6. Tagged. I wouldn‘t say I loathed it, but I tried to read it twice and gave up both times, just couldn‘t get into it.

I made the mistake going into this with Harry Dresden in mind, not so much the character, but the atmosphere and the light-heartedness. That was my mistake. This book was incredible and I‘m looking forward to the rest of the series, however, some parts were tough to digest and those scenes showed the depth of Butcher‘s writing. If you like GRRM and Kohn Gwynn‘s, you‘ll love this one.

I got bored earlier this and organized my GoodReads shelves. I managed to clean off 2011 and now I‘m working on ‘09, ‘10, ‘12, and ‘13. I won‘t get them cleaned off this year, but I will by the end of January.

One of my favorite pages in my #bujo. I have all the books I‘ve added to Goodreads since 2008 typed up and printed by year I added the books and alphabetical order, as well as a couple of challenges. I love coloring the titles in as I complete them. Feels like I actually accomplished something this year. 😂😂

Chelleo I understand what you mean now that I can see it! Very pretty!! 7y
ThatNerdyBookwyrm @Chelleo Thank you! This is my old one 😂. I actually redid the whole thing when I found the Artist Loft book. I still hate the blank on all the pages. I need to buy a ton of stickers. (edited) 7y
ThatNerdyBookwyrm We also won‘t talk about how long it took me to color everything in. 7y

I love Butcher. Love him. I consider him my author!husband and Harry Dresden as my book!husband. I‘ve owned this series for years and just getting around to it and I don‘t know what to think about this one. It‘s completely different from his other two series and by that I mean, this book is completely fucked up.

ThatNerdyBookwyrm @RaimeyGallant Can you please stop posting this on all my older posts? This is literally the third time I‘ve deleted it. Thanks. (edited) 7y
ThatNerdyBookwyrm @RaimeyGallant I don‘t like spammy posts and automatically delete them. And the fact that you didn‘t even start a conversation is annoying. Posting your webpage to get more viewership and to drive up your numbers is extremely unprofessional. 7y

I'm still slightly under the weather but at least I'm reading a lot. This one is a lot of fun.

hlgreenfield Hope you feel better. 🙂 I read most of the Harry Dresden series ( saving the last few because the new ones are taking so long to come out) but I've never check out Jim Butcher's other books! Glad to hear it's fun. 7y

I really wanted to like it, since Jim Butcher's Dresden Files is one of my favourite series, but the Codex Alera couldn't captivate me. It was okay, but I probably won't read the other books in the series.

Very different than what I've gotten used to with Dresden Files, but still has a pleasing quantity of snark, even in a more traditional fantasy setting.

The "what? WHAT?!" at the end made me giggle uncontrollably as we can all see what is coming, but the affected character can't, because teenager :)

I find that I do not like books that keep switching point of views, but Jim Butcher does this masterfully. I felt very invested in each of the main characters and could not wait to see what happened next. I cannot wait to start reading the second book and see where this series goes.

Starting the Codex Alera, a series by Jim Butcher that managed to escape my notice until now. If it's anything like the Dresden Files or Cinder Spires, I think I'm in for quite a ride.

We had such a great time at New York Comic Con this weekend! Thanks to everyone who stopped by our booth to say hi and check out some books. ? We've been sharing cosplay photos on the Ace Roc Books Twitter page, but we wanted to share our favorite here--Ash and a puppy Pika with Jim Butcher's Furies of Calderon! Butcher was dared to write a good story inspired by Pokémon, and his Codex Alexa series was the awesome result.

The first installment in a four part epic. Interesting magic derived from nature spirits in a society on par with Romans. It gets crazy real from skirmishes to all our warfares it's just one thrill after another. If you like any other Jim butcher book you'll like this or vice versa.
