While it is true that the AI is a better character than any of the human character and it is very dry, it does explain everything clearly and gives you a lot to think about. This is what books and Arthur C. Clarke can do really well. Ask big questions and really make you think.

Check out our discussion about it on our Mind Duck Books Podcast ep.60: https://bit.ly/3S8tGMB

Read this before re-watching the film. A very interesting way to have a movie develop (created by director and author) before having a novel to follow. Very enjoyable read though, and currently enjoying the sequel!

I‘ve seen the film twice before and read the book twice too. But this third reading was the first time that I‘ve read it days after seeing the film which, incidentally, was the first time I had seen it at the cinema. They compliment each other so well. Both are simply beautiful works of art. I‘ve now become slightly obsessed.

stretchkev It's never occurred to me to watch 2001 and read the book at the same time. Always kept as to separate works. Neat that they compliment each other rather than clash. 1y
The_Book_Ninja @stretchkev You are left to contemplate the meaning of much of the movie. I feel the book answers some questions but not to the detriment of either. 1y
Bookwomble I'm slightly obsessed by this film, and love the book, too - I have that same edition! The film soundtrack got me into the music of composer Gyorgi Ligeti. 2001 is something of a cultural leviathan. 1y
The_Book_Ninja @Bookwomble Yes, that absolutely bonkers stuff he does with the voices is both unsettling and beautiful. If you have, or have read what I‘m reading next then we truly were separated at birth 👯‍♂️ 1y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja Ha! Well I await the reveal of your next read with anticipation! 😄 1y

Basil made his opinion clear about this one 😂

I was pretty much enjoying this until the last 40 pages or so. Then the story took a hard right turn and I don‘t think I‘m into sci-fi enough to appreciate the ending. Instead I have a headache 😵‍💫

But! August #doublespin complete (this was also my double spin for March, but I didn‘t get to it) and another #1001books under my belt

Written in 1968, I think Clarke succeeded in creating a story that still holds up today. I should watch the movie someday.

Updating my bullet journal while listening to the tagged book.
I started a bullet journal before but failed to keep track and didn't like how it turned out. Keeping it simple this time and just adding the books I read in the last 3 years.

This is one book I have never read, but corrected this over the weekend. This was a more enjoyable read than I was expecting, and now looking forward to getting to 2010, the next book in the Space Odyssey Series.

2nd book finished for #MarvellousMarch

Conceived of 50+ years apart, these 2 books represent the #conflictedworlds prompt #technology. In Clarke‘s story, the HAL9000 computer becomes more powerful than human cognition (or so it imagines...); whereas Turkle‘s subtitle evokes current dilemmas: “Why we expect more from technology and less from each other”!!

This sci-fi “classic” exceeded my expectations! The only thing I‘ve known about the book or film all involve HAL 9000. There‘s is so much more to the story than a computer going rogue on a space mission. I absolutely loved the beginning and end. Everything in between kept me pretty engaged too. I think the story is interesting enough that this would appeal to most readers, even those who typically don‘t typically read sci-if. 4/5

It‘s been over 50 years since this was originally published.

The author indicates that this book was written as a movie tie-in BEFORE the movie was filmed. He worked with Stanley Kubrick. This was interesting.

The book starts out very slow. About halfway it picks up & takes off. Since it‘s a movie tie-in I‘ll imagine that you all know the story. It‘s earned it genre as a classic but I still prefer the movie.

Great book, read it!

For such a small book, only 224pges, it sure packs a lot in. It has 4 distinct parts, the 1st with prehistoric man, the 2nd the finding of the slab on the moon, 3rd the journey with HAL the homicidal AI then the evolution of the star child. It reminds me a great deal of the movie Contact with Jodi Foster it some ways, the last section particularly. Its one of those books that I‘ll find myself thinking about for a long time.5⭐️ #MarchUnshelfing

Clwojick Way to go! 5y
vivastory You probably already know this, but Clarke wrote this based on Kubrick's film. One of the earlier, & probably more well-known, novelizations of a movie. 5y
vivastory Well I should say he wrote it as kubrick was making his movie & then published it afterwards* 5y

#BookMail Pt6 I‘m obsessed with these special editions of SciFi classics. All come with a foreword by Neil Gaiman & look spectacular. My only tiny gripe is the way the writing on the spine is back to front. I now have Neuromancer, Dune, 2001 & on order is Stranger In A Strange Land & The Left Hand Of Darkness. The only one to get now is The Once And Future King. Does anybody else feel compelled to get all the books in a special edition series?

DuckOfDoom I have completed this series a month ago, but still have to read stranger in a strange land. They look so pretty and I can afford the whole series because it's 'just' 6 books. I also collect the 10th anniversary editions by gollancz, but I am way behind the releases. 6y
BarbaraBB I‘d go crazy with those spines 😲😉 6y
JazzFeathers 😲😲😲😲💙💙💙💙 6y
Lizpixie @DuckOfDoom I‘d check out the gollancz editions but I have enough obsessions!🙅🏻‍♀️This series is wonderful though, the stories are all true classics & only 6 instead of 20-30 to get. Better for the bank balance💸 @BarbaraBB I‘m trying to figure out a way of displaying them so it‘s not so noticeable🤔 @JazzFeathers have you seen the rest? 💚🧡💙🖤❤️💛 6y

Naturally a Clarke written book adaptation of seminal film is gonna be pretty good. Unfortunately, because ideas from the book/movie have been stolen so many times, it‘s getting difficult to be blown away by the original work. Maybe because I‘ve seen the film or because I‘ve seen countless films inspired by 2001, I wasn‘t completely amazed by the book. That‘s quite a shame because this story is still the strongest.

I. ADORE. THIS. BOOK.

I didn‘t expect to like it as much as I did. Came in with low expectations since I had already seen the movie and enjoyed it...fell asleep to it...thought it was weird...as ya do.

However, I literally just finished it and I already want to read it again. I may have a new favorite book.

The book and the film were done concurrently; Clarke would watch some of the dailies each day and go back and tweak the book, which was only two-thirds done when shooting started.
