The 13.5 Lives Of Captain Bluebear
The 13.5 Lives Of Captain Bluebear | Walter Moers
A delightfully illustrated cult novel, literary satire and epic adventure. 'Within the first 15 pages I was carried away by the sheer craziness of it all. Some Minipirates find a baby bear with blue fur inside a walnut shell floating on the ocean towards a giant whirlpool. They rescue him and teach him about knots and waves, and that a good white lie is often considerably more exciting than the truth. Then, when he outgrows their ship to such an extent that he is in danger of sinking it, they abandon him on an island with a bottle of seaweed juice and a loaf of seaweed bread. Thus Bluebear comes to the end of his first life and embarks on his second. By the end of the book, he has expended exactly half of his 27 lives. Again and again, Moers confounds our expectations as the narrative twists and turns, travels backwards and forwards in time. Part science fiction, part fairy tale, part myth, part epic, the book is a satire on all these genres and so constantly satirises itself. Very amusing' - Daily Telegraph

Captain Bluebear is the luckiest bear in all the universes and in all the dimensions. Or, depending on your perspective, he‘s the unluckiest. He seems to always find himself in the worst predicaments, but then finds a way out in either the cleverest (or luckiest) of ways. This is a chunky book full of adventure, whimsy, humor, and silliness. There are creatures and places you‘ve heard of, and many you‘ve never heard of before… (continued ⬇️)

jen_the_scribe And intermingled in all the chaos and adventures are friendships that keep Bluebear going. A book full of the zest of life and a reminder of what makes it all worth living: going on adventures, building friendships that last a lifetime (or many), and making a home for ourselves even when we feel like we were basically born adrift at sea 😉 4mo

This has become an auto-pick author for me even though I think I already have all his books. I've read 2 and have 2 on the shelf for later. I love the whimsy and fantasy mash-up perfect for when I want low-med stakes and something that will make my heart bubble up with happy feels. (vs the stress I usually have while reading lol)
You'll love Bluebear and all his friends and adventures. And the art *chef kiss* def worth reading the physical copy

A treasure trove of imagination. Adventure & nonsense in equal measure, there are shaggy-dog-story stretches but also a lot of fun. Cover does well to reference Adams and Silverstein, I'd add the absurdities of Terry Pratchett's Discworld & Alice in Wonderland to the mix. Beware: certain creatures & scenarios could be nightmare fuel, and being published in 1999 means certain insensitivities crop up. ⚠️ Fatphobia

The keyboard: a reliable source of inspiration. ⌨️

julesG It's Quertzuiopü in German (different alignment of keys on the keyboard). Fredda is my kids' favourite. 1y
julesG Also, your posts a) inspired us to dig up my copy only to notice b) one child took my copy to their father's and c) it's now in storage because their father had an accident while moving house and no boxes have been unpacked so far. 1y
Robotswithpersonality @julesG Nifty! I had no idea the keyboard was different but that makes total sense if it's based on the letters used most in the language. I love the 'hairball that stuck a finger in a light socket' look of Fredda, but I've been weaving my mind because I feel like I've seen the character design before...maybe there's a muppet that loops similar? 🤷🏼‍♂️🤔 1y

AshleyHoss820 @Ashley_Nicoletto Yes!! Me too! I‘m a terrible, chaotic mood reader. When I get like that, I just pull titles, read a chapter, repeat until I settle on one that grabs me. In this case, it‘s never the book. It‘s me. 😂🤣 5y

#LetsTravelJuly Day 20: Captain Bluebear‘s journey has taken a great deal of #detour but this novel is one epic ride! Some may find Moers longwinded while others might find his imagination too absurd for words and abandon the reading of the novel altogether. But no book has ever made me laugh out loud in such abandon – tears streaming down my cheeks in utter hilarity. My review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-4IK

I was a big fan of this book! The land of Zamonia that author Walter Moers created is whimsical and quirky and the illustrations that accompany the story are fantastic. It‘s 703 pages but it flies by and ended up being a fairly quick read. If you want an adult fairytale, this book is for you. Highly recommend!

I officially give up! This has been sitting on my table since there was still snow on the ground and I have had no desire to pick it up. It reminded me if Hitchhiker‘s Guide to the Galaxy- quirky and a little out there. But it became repetitive and predictable. I didn‘t finish it but it still should have ended 300 pages ago.

#QuotsyApril18 Day 23: Take a #Chance is all that Captain Bluebear is asking. If you haven‘t discovered Walter Moers yet, and you love fantasy and word play and strange art - then you will have to HAVE TO find him and read him. Translated from the German language, I pride myself in reading all of his translated works, thus far. I am a committed nerd that way. Get to know Zamonia, book nerds! It‘s an acquired taste, I admit, but well worth it.

Seems you love Walter Moers – or you don‘t. I tried once or twice with his books but I could not relate to neither his characters nor the way he writes.

But as I saw @Sarah83 's post about the English edition I remembered that one of my friends offered me to lend me the audiobook. Which is what I‘d really look forward to because I think this might be a story suiting my ears better than my eyes.

Sarah83 You try the TV edition first, than the book is really amazing 😍 7y
Buechersuechtling You‘re not talking about „Die Sendung mit der Maus“ (The Show with the Mouse) pieces/stories, are you❓🤔 It‘s that kind of nonsense displayed there that made me initially dislike the author and that book. I never thought this is funny or witty humor. For me it‘s only stupid and dull. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 7y
