This was a great book. It had a few twists and ended up in a manner that I was not expecting. I enjoyed every moment of it.

A Stargate like travel system with orcs, magic, and gods should have checked all the boxes for me but this fell a bit flat
The world build is really cool and inventive which makes the book interesting.
I don't know if it was the voices or the writing that didn't work for me. It wasn't a favourite which I'm disappointed about. I really wanted to enjoy it

These are hands down the best stenciled edges I‘ve ever seen. It‘s also a signed & numbered duology! Christmas came early for me. ❤️
If Stargate and A Darker Shade of Magic joined and added in active gods, that might describe this book. That should‘ve worked for me! I went into it expecting it to!
But alas. I was frustrated for most of this book. The writing voice was so passive and the main character was extremely boring. Most of the characters were. I just didn‘t care. And then a few things happened that absolutely pissed me off. So yeah. It was a no from me.
Just read about the sequel to The Unspoken Name. Feb 18! Can‘t wait.
When a mysterious stranger rescues Csorwe from a sacrificial death, she devotes her new life to his murky quest. This is the kind of book that made me ask "what was the point of everything else, then?" more than once. It is a pretty epic story, and I enjoyed having queer characters simply exist without their queerness being a major point of contention. This book wasn't for me (I thought for sure it would be!), but it's an excellent read. #LGBTQ
All the cool kids get a free monthly book from Tor.com newsletter. This one‘s a pretty unusual premise and also #lgbtqia. @Soubhiville had a pretty great description: “Need a fantasy with Orcs, gods that actually speak to their disciples, flying ships, portal mazes, political intrigue, spies, and queer relationships that aren‘t even remarkable because that‘s just who the characters are? Here it is. “

I really enjoyed this audiobook and I‘ll read the sequel assuming there is one. 👍👍
“A waxen mask of distaste, belonging to someone who had not only seen a maggot, but who was resigned to seeing maggots everyday and had begun to be disappointed in their quality.”
This line made me laugh out loud and also kind of cringe.
(Image found on Pinterest, the artist is Bluesssatan on Instagram. I thought about finding an image of maggots, but thought better of it)
I have never heard of Tor‘s Book of the Month, but it looks exciting!

I haven‘t read much swords and sorcery stuff in a while (like a lot of genre fiction it can be hard to find the good stuff amidst all the blatant sexism, racism, and homophobia), but I‘m really enjoying this one.
A wonderful, unique, dark epic fantasy that kept me guessing. Csorwe starts out a meek orc priestess destined to die at age 14 as a sacrifice. A mage politician, Sethennai, dares her to run and work for him. For years she does his bidding of espionage/murder but without feeling valued. When on assignment (with frenemy Tal), she meets a powerful mage whose life is to be cut short like Csorwe's. Adventure, shifting loyalties, and queer love ensue.
I've started and bailed on quite a few books lately but I'm hoping this one is gonna grab me! It's got high praise from authors whose books I've really liked, like Arkady Martine and Tamsyn Muir. Plus, orc priestess turned wizard assassin?? And queer content? #QueerBooks #LGBTQBooks #LGBTQ #Fantasy
This started off a little slow but I really started to enjoyed it after Csorwe was older and more capable of things. I do think it could have been a little shorter and been ok, but I'm glad I read it. @hwestfall my fiance will go to the post office for me either tomorrow or Wednesday to mail it to you. @InBooksILive @aeeklund #lmpbc
I so enjoyed this book
I loved the character of Csorwe. I thought the pacing was perfect & the story was easy to follow. I easily connected with the characters & enjoyed the relationship & struggles between Csorwe & Talasseres who had a bit of a rivalry but also grudging respect for each other
I liked that the story was diverse but didn't make a big deal out of it & was the norm for the society in this story
⬇️
I didn‘t dislike this one, but I also didn‘t feel super compelled by it? It had its moments but it‘s not really the style of fantasy that I like (even if I can‘t quite place why.)
And just in time for weekend, the rest of my book order found its way home. 📚👾
Ready to dive into this fantasy. I haven‘t read fantasy in awhile and it‘s one of my favourite genres so I‘m very excited
I‘m about halfway done with this one! It‘s been an interesting read so far. It‘s definitely kept my attention. I‘m enjoying it ☺️ Talasseres is quite an amusing character.

@hwestfall @aeeklund @Shadowfat how‘re your books so far? (If you‘ve started them yet, of course)
Well. Saw that coming. All the schools are shutting down here (WA) for 6 weeks and so are some of the libraries at least through the end of March. I have no idea if my library is affected or not since I‘m slightly outside of Seattle. But still, never hurts to be safe 😜 Loaded up with these guys today juuuust in case. I had to go pick up the tagged book since it was on hold for me anyway and the others just sort of wound up in my arms 😁
This book is already very good, and I‘m only 100 pages in. I‘m excited to finally be reading it and I can‘t wait for you guys to read it too @Shadowfat @aeeklund @hwestfall I should‘ve went with my gut before when I was first choosing because I was going to pick this one but I decided last second not to and went with the other one. Very happy with my new choice!

Fantastic and fantastical! I loved it. Orcs, revenants, Magic, blood, power, strange portals, weird old religions/cults, and creepy Lovecraftian monsters. What a blast this was to read.
Wow. What a fantastic fantasy! I loved everything about it! Such a unique and refreshing story. And lots of LGBTQ representation! Everything about the worldbuilding was just really interesting-the races, the cultures, the cities, the religions- I just wish the book was longer because I didn't want to leave this world!

The party continues! I've got all the cleaning, laundry, and grocery shopping done...so I've got the whole rest of the weekend to read, read, read! (And snack!) 😁💕📚 #litsypartyofone @Lynnsoprano @MrBook
I really enjoyed this story. This book contains several different types of characters (acolyte, prioress, wizards, librarians, scholars, inquisitors, serpents (that talk), mercenaries, undead, half-dead, and others, which, keeps the storyline interesting and involving. Overall I will look for more books by A. K. Lakewood, in the future.
It was finally warm enough today to take a walk in the park and read outside! 😍📚💕
So here‘s the thing, I liked the book but I‘m not entirely sure I should have. One the one hand, it‘s does upend some standard fantasy tropes in delightful ways, is eminently readable & has an intriguing protagonist. On the other hand, the story almost feels as if it‘s just skimming the surface, as if we are viewing things from some remove, & we never seem to get close enough to really care. A very readable fantasy & a pick but I wanted more.
Up before the sun...fortunately, I have a new book to keep me company!
Valentine's Day dinner! 😍🍝🍺💕📚
