Any #valdemar fans? I started re-reading the series earlier this year. I've read about half of them over the years so there will be about 19 mainline books that will be new to me. I'm intending to read them all in publication order so I started with the very first one: Arrows of the Queen. This is an excellent intro to the Valdemar kingdom and how Heralds work.

Light_of_Aether I haven't read any of the Valdemar books published after 2003 nor have I read the Vows and Honor or Darian's Tale books. I have two of the 16 anthologies books, but I don't remember if I read them through. Including mainline and anthologies I have 35 new-to-me books to read! 1y
GondorGirl I've read the entire series (most of them multiple times). You're in for a real treat with the Darian books, they're some of my favorites. 1y
Light_of_Aether I'm glad to hear that! I always enjoyed the parts with the Tayledras. 1y

1. If it's YA I cdc typically see the twists coming. Adult books are a lot more difficult.

2. Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar series. I've been reading them since I was 12 (there are over 30 books now!). It was my gateway into fantasy novels and even though some of the earlier books feel a bit dated I will always adore them.

3. Fake dating! And morally gray characters. 🧡

4. Litsy!

Always a good read. I saw RBdigital was carrying these, so I expect that's what I'll be up to for a bit. Although there are lots of good things, and lots of queer themes, I'm not sure I can in good conscience recommend then as #queerfantasy, or #queerbooks since, as expected for the times, the more explicitly queer characters tend to meet tragic ends. But then, the whole Valdemar series is a delicate balance of joy and tragedy for most characters.

ssleif This trilogy, and the Vanyel/Magic's pawn trilogy, were actually the very first books I read as a young person with explicitly GRSM characters. I have always loved them, and with the caveat that Lackey sometimes Buries Her Gays, at this point in her career, I think these books still hold up really well, especially if you enjoy heroes that get beat up, self sacrifice, and save everyone, often with a miraculous last-minute plot point. 4y

How have I never read her before? This sounds like everything I would have loved back in the day. Looking forward to digging in. Also, thanks eBay.

rretzler I‘ve never read any of her books either. Sounds like I may need to pick one up. 5y

I just finished Arrows of the Queen, the first book of the Arrows Trilogy. This was Mercedes Lackey‘s debut novel and the first of many more books to come. The book has more world building in my opinion than storyline which was completely fine with me. Perhaps the author‘s intent was to set up the reader for the many books to come. Overall a great read! This has now become one of my favorite books of 2019. #80sfantasy #heraldsofvaldemar #talia

Rudis 😍😍😍 5y
Deifio Let me know how you like the whole trilogy. I liked it, but I think you can really tell that it's an older fantasy trilogy. 😅 4y

Now reading page 165.

I‘m trying to understand what Talia‘s real “gift” or powers are. I‘m underwhelmed by what she can do especially considering that she‘s the STAR of the book. 🤷🏻‍♀️

#heralds #valdemar #collegium

Leniverse It's the classical YA heroine thing, even though this was written before YA was a genre (and the series contains some adult scenes that might need trigger warnings). She's been underestimated by everyone including herself all her short life, and her Gift is a rare one, so even the Heralds don't know what to make of her at first. She'll come into her own. But it's a trilogy, so you need to be patient with the journey. 🙂 5y
vumblereads @leniverse I just finished Arrows of the Queen, and I‘m starting to see how important her gift is. Thanks for explaining everything to me 😊 5y

Has anyone read this book? I haven‘t finished reading it yet but the book has a remarkable semblance to Harry Potter. What‘s more interesting is that it was written BEFORE the Harry Potter books. Which makes me think, did JK Rowling get her ideas from older YA fantasy? #jkrowling #harrypotter #yafantasy #arrows #heralds #talia #mercedeslackey #trilogy #highfantasy

OneCent76 I haven't read it yet but now you have me curious! 5y
vumblereads @OneCent76 yes please do! Would like to hear your thoughts on it 5y
Leniverse There other, older, fantasy books with a similar setting to the Harry Potter books too. A Wizard of Earthsea, for one. And the character of Harry Potter himself is clearly based on Timothy Hunter from the Neil Gaiman graphic novel 5y

So far so good! Can‘t believe this book has negative reviews. And I can‘t believe a ya book published in 1985 has LGBTQ themes. #highfantasy #lgbtq #ya #yafantasy #horses

Tonton Welcome😎 5y
Leniverse Yes, Lackey had LGBTQ+ heroes and heroines way back in day. Female fantasy and sci-fi writers have always had them, I think. 5y

vumblereads @Leniverse and here I thought LGBTQ just started to hit off in YA books. I‘m now pushing myself to read more diverse books including those published earlier. I‘ve always stuck to one genre before but learning all this makes me want to explore and diversify my reading. 5y

Would you consider Arrows of the Queen as a high fantasy book? Just wondering.....
#highfantasy #mercedeslackey #ya

sudi Hi, Welcome To Litsy🙋 Going to add you on Insta. 5y
vumblereads Sure no problem! 5y
rretzler Hi! I haven‘t read it, so I looked it up on Worlds Without End, which is a fantastic website for Sci-Fi, Fantasy and Horror books (more cataloging than discussing but it has great challenges.) WWE lists it as Fairytale Fantasy or Juvenile Fantasy - that doesn‘t mean it‘s not High Fantasy, but WWE doesn‘t list it that way. If you‘re asking because of a challenge, I‘d go for it and count it as High Fantasy, if you think it has those elements! 5y
See All 14 Comments
vumblereads Oh thank you for replying @rretzler ! It‘s not a part of a challenge. My coworker and I were discussing genres and sub genres last night and now I can‘t help but over analyze every book I read 😂 I haven‘t done any challenges yet, I‘m one of those moody readers and I can‘t possibly follow someone‘s guide on what to read next. The only challenge I‘ve done so far is the Goodreads challenge 😂 5y
vumblereads @rretzler and thank you for the website recommendation, I will surely check it out. I‘m learning so many new things here on Litsy! 5y
UwannaPublishme Welcome to Litsy! 😊🙌🏻📚📚 5y
rretzler I know exactly what you mean. I have a unique way of approaching challenges - I read whatever I want and then I see if it falls within the challenges I may be interested in. I‘ve been in the Popsugar and ReadHarder Challenges for a couple of years and I know I won‘t complete them - it‘s just interesting to me to see how I line up with them. For instance this year I‘ve already read 9/24 from ReadHarder and that‘s probably all I‘ll actually get. 😜 5y
rretzler And you‘re welcome for the WWE recommendation- it‘s a go-to site for me (edited) 5y
vumblereads @rretzler that‘s true. I‘m currently aiming to read 100 books, and it‘s probably not going to happen unless I read children‘s books or poetry books 😅 but ever since I started listening to audiobooks, I‘ve been finishing books faster lately so there might be a chance that I can reach 100 books this year. 5y
kgriffith I think of it as high fantasy because the world it exists in isn‘t ours, is built out quite extensively, and it has magical history and legacies. I think a book can be both YA and high fantasy or hard sci fi 🤓 I also hit 100 for the first time last year, and probably 80 of them were audiobooks! They make a huge difference for me, because I spend so much time in the car. 5y
vumblereads Yes audiobooks definitely help. I stumbled upon a video critic on YouTube about how booktubers were reading too much and how reading 5 books a week was unbelievable. But with a growing market for audiobooks and graphic novels, it can‘t be helped if people get to read 5 or more books in one week. I‘m definitely reading or listening more and I spend lesser time watching tv. 5y
vumblereads @kgriffith A YA hard sci fi would be an interesting read! Any recommendations? 5y
kgriffith @vumblereads I'll drop some specific recs after work but in the meantime, here's a tagmash from LibraryThing with the top titles tagged both YA and Hard Sci-fi, many of which I've read and loved: https://www.librarything.com/tag/YA,+hard+sf 5y

Decided that I needed to reread this today. Actually, that I need to reread all of my favorite Valdemar books. They were my intro to fantasy, thanks to my first year college roommate who kept telling me I HAD to read these books. I was curious, especially when said roommate didn‘t even blink when I came out to her (it was 1995, and she was from India by way of the Midwest) and said she was fine with it, she read fantasy novels.

Listening to this on audio is a surprisingly emotional experience. This passage made me tear up then laugh, first at her realization that she has value, and then to her reaction to bawling on the queen‘s shoulder. In general though, I‘d forgotten how much I identified with Talia as a girl even younger than she, whose recently-divorced mother was becoming deeply entrenched in conservative religion and checking out from life with her three children.

@brandybear22 asked me tonight about books that are essential to knowing me. She already knew Stone Butch Blues, Matilda, Ender‘s Game. I thought of the tagged book, first in a trilogy and the first adult fantasy novel I ever read, and the Vanyel trilogy, both by Mercedes Lackey. I went into my LibraryThing Favorites to make sure I wasn‘t missing anything obvious. They were my first six entries 😊

My husband and I have strict rules for making book collecting a challenge. We each have a list we carry, and any book needed for a series or set has to be bought in person.

It's taken me YEARS, but I've completed my Valdemar set (until a new book releases). I have every book first edition, first print. Those that were released only in paperback I also have the hardcover book club compilations. Except the anthologies, everything is signed.

GondorGirl The only thing I cheated on was the second volume of the leather bound collectors set. It's such a rare item that I would likely never find it in person. 6y

This is the first time I have finished a fantasy book, or at least fantasy of this kind. I was pleasantly surprised to find feminist themes, thoughtful considerations pertaining to ability and disability, and the inclusion of a lesbian couple among the Herald heroes. I was really skeptical at first, but I'm won over and looking forward to reading the next book in this series.

GondorGirl Misty is one of my favorite authors for a reason. 'Arrows...' was her first book and she was writing in a time where diversity in fantasy novels wasn't really a thing. After you finish this trilogy try the 'Last Herald Mage' trilogy. It's my favorite. ❤❤❤ 7y

This was my second read and I didn't like it nearly as much as I did the first time.

The main character, Talia, was kind of a Mary Sue the main romance felt forced and random; the pacing of the story itself was weird. On the plus side, the world-building was good, the concept was really interesting, and there were several women loving women!!! It wasn't completely without its merits, but just wasn't really an enjoyable read for me.

There are a billion ways I could have gone for the #kickassheroines prompt (I've always read mostly about girls and women). When I looked to my shelves, these tattered copies caught my eye. I read these over and over in high school. Talia wasn't necessarily a physically kickass heroine (though she can withstand torture like no one else), but she has great mental strength and gets herself through some impossible situations. #seasonsreadings2016

when my world imploded at the age of 11, this book got me through some very dark times. My copy of it is so battered I had to rebind and clear-tape the bejeezus out of it. I love this book. The Collegium series is weak as hell but the original stories are dear to me.

mahasoor I snatch up any new Valdemar book I spot but this latest series, especially the middle books (the fuck is going on with Lena and Bear, they are HUGE dicks at various points imo) just hasn't been as satisfying as Alberich's story, Talia, Skif, the hawk brothers and brightly burning...
