I‘ve been enjoying this book more than I even thought I would. Each day offers a chosen passage from one of the plays or Sonnets along with brief commentary. It‘s never more than a 5 minute read and I find myself eagerly looking forward to picking it up every day. 🗓

It took me 2 years to get through this just because I kept forgetting to read it at times, but I enjoyed every minute of it (and will probably start again tomorrow). This lovely tome takes the reader not just through the year, but through all of Shakespeare‘s works and throughout Shakespeare‘s life.

GingerAntics I especially loved the English and Shakespearean history woven throughout. If you are a fan of Shakespeare, you will enjoy this journey as much as I do.#Shakespeare #AllieEsiri #ShakespeareForEveryDayOfTheYear @Faibka 1y
batsy How lovely! I need to get this for 2024 💜 1y
GingerAntics @batsy I‘m not sure, but I think @Faibka finished it in 2021. It was a lovely read. 1y

My first book of 2022. I finished all the days of Shakespeare on the 31st but wanted to read the epilogue.

This book was a great introduction to Shakespeare‘s works and his life. Everyday reading was approximately 5-10 minutes but so fascinating that I spent more time just learning about him.

With one week left, I have finished half of my Finish Before 2022 list. The shakes and poetry could potentially be carried into next year. I can hopefully finish the other two. I just have a bunch of training to do for my new job before I can start working alone in the new year (possibly around the 7th) when I‘ll have more time to read again, so right now certain sacrifices are having to be made.

457 years ago today, the first documented evidence of Shakespeare‘s life was recorded in The Holy Trinity Church of Stratford Upon Avon baptism records. The inscription reads, “1564: Gulliamus, fillius Johannas Shakspeare,” which is Latin for “William, son of John Shakespeare.”

I can‘t remember if we talked about this when we read this in the #ShakespeareReadAlong #Shakespeare #AllieEsiri #ShakespeareForEveryDayOfTheYear @Faibka

Graywacke I think I learned this as I read the Signet afterward stuff. Disturbing and fascinating. 3y
GingerAntics @Graywacke it is disturbing, but also a hole in the argument by some that Shakespeare never did anything original. He does histories of the past, but he also brings in current events as it were. I just feel bad for poor Rodrigo Lopez. He probably didn‘t do anything to the Queen, but no one was about to actually check on that. Antisemitism ruled the day on that one. 3y
Graywacke @GingerAntics right. He was surely innocent. No one poisons a queen, certainly not a non-English physician dependent on royal patronage. Makes no sense. It‘s all political bloody maneuvering. 3y

Interesting, fun facts about R&J. The “Balcony Scene” has no balcony, and “wherefore” doesn‘t mean where. That certainly changes the meaning of that line. I‘ve read R&J three times, all in classes, and no one ever talked about the meaning of “wherefore.”

GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit this one specifically? Really? It is quite nice. I think any issue I have with it was that Samual Taylor Coleridge liked it so much and he‘s a frat boy. That‘s not really Shakespeare‘s fault, is it? 3y
Chrissyreadit It is not Shakespeare‘s fault. Just like it‘s not Goldings fault that Cruz likes The Princess Bride. 3y
GingerAntics @Chrissyreadit Ted Cruz?! Stay away from my movie you butt face!!! Eh. No. If he wants to “as you wish,” most Americans want him to go jump off a cliff. He better get on that. 3y

Faibka Huh, didn‘t view Macbeth‘s relationship in that light. And love that little poem 3y
GingerAntics @Faibka it certainly is a different view of their relationship. She comes off as kind of pushy, but she knows he wants it. It‘s like he has the desire and she has the ambition, so they work together. It is certainly an interesting way to look at those two. 3y
See All 8 Comments
Faibka @GingerAntics true, in that sense they are actually a very successful couple in that they‘re very much compatible, unfortunately towards wrongdoing 3y
Faibka @GingerAntics love it how Shakespeare can make us view social relationships and people in so many different lights! 3y
GingerAntics @Faibka he could really dig into the psychology of characters in a way that really makes you have to remind yourself that there was no such thing as psychology in his day. I could see a very valid argument for Shakespeare being the father of psychology. He‘s got to be better than some of the sexist twats that are the “fathers” of the field. 3y
Faibka @GingerAntics I was just thinking that the main part of Shakespeare‘s genius was how masterfully he exposed human psychology and behavior! And yeah, frankly I‘ve learned more psychology from reading Dostoyevsky than than actual psychology books. This motivates me more than ever to read all his works, there‘s so much poetic wealth and psychological knowledge in them! 3y
GingerAntics @Faibka totally agree. Psychology has always been a curiosity to me. I took AP Psych in high school just to get a fix. I‘ve been taking classes and reading books and articles since I was about 15. I love it for some reason. I love that side of Shakespeare. Starting with “what‘s wrong with this guy” and then reading through and picking out all the little details from the play like it‘s some sort of dramatic case study. 3y

GingerAntics @Cuilin absolutely my favourite Shakespeare play!!! 3y
Cuilin @GingerAntics Oh me too. Once upon a time I knew every soliloquy. Hamlet was my first literary crush as a teenager. Oh the sad, pale, and misunderstood poet. Swoon. 🥰🤦‍♀️ (edited) 3y
GingerAntics @Cuilin I had no idea how young my obsession started. I was OBSESSED with The Lion King when it came out and that really stuck with me. I never realised it was a retelling of hamlet until after I was obsessed with that and studied it in college. 3y

GingerAntics @Faibka I guess the editor was just driving home the gory, creepy nature of this play. This would be a good Halloween play. 3y
Faibka @GingerAntics I was actually shocked by the violence of this play when I first encountered it. I knew the myth it was based on so my first thought was like come on, as if it wasn‘t disturbing enough already! Maybe I just can‘t get the images out of my head from the movie adaptation 3y

Faibka Long ago I read a play from the Golden Age of Spanish Theater that dealt with the same theme but in this case, everyone remained in one piece and, in full Spanish Theater style of that era, got happily married in the end! 3y
GingerAntics @Faibka that is certainly a different twist on this tale. 🤣😂🤣 I just hope they don‘t do a new movie now. Can you imagine how terrifying this would be today with all the CGI and special effects? Grown adults would have nightmares for weeks!!! 3y
Faibka @GingerAntics ugh no! Still having nightmares from that one and it‘s way toned down for today‘s standards, lol I wonder what a Disney adaptation would look like 🤔😂 I remember watching The Little Mermaid and thinking yeah that‘s not at all how it ends, lol. I guess they prefer the old Spanish Theater way, heck even Ursula would‘ve gotten married 3y
GingerAntics @Faibka Ursula‘s wedding sounds truly terrifying. Disney does some... interesting... things with stories. I think Brave was the first one that didn‘t end in marriage. It‘s about time we start sending that message to kids. No you do not need to get married to be “happily ever after” thanks. Still, it could be amusing. 🤣😂🤣 3y
Faibka @GingerAntics yeah and seriously doubt some of those matches were “happy” afterwards, they don‘t show the kids that part! 😆 3y
GingerAntics @Faibka wholly unrealistic 3y

I love a good discussion of the flip flopping between catholic and Protestant in England, especially if it involves the Book of Common Prayer. I have a copy of Shakespeare‘s 1552 BoCP and a book on Shakespeare‘s Book of Common Prayer. Yes, I‘m a nerd.
I wish the play/entry choice had reflected the influence that the BoCP had on Shakespeare‘s plays.

It‘s interesting how the character equates food and love in the sense that you can get so much of it to reach to point of saturation. It reminded me of the Twilight Zone episode “The Chaser” in which it is shown what happens when incessant love and attention is showered upon someone who initially desired it (be careful what you wish for!)
