It had been several years since I read this one, and I had forgotten how 100% perfect it is. This may be my favorite Heyer. As usual, the cover picture has nothing to do with the actual story, though.

Re-listening to this, and I am reminded of why it is my favorite Heyer romance! So engaging, quite a lot of activity, intertwined characters and subplots (it is a small world, after all), and I absolutely love Freddie. Lord Ledgerwood is also terrific.

📷: Farmer‘s market wildflower bouquet chosen by my mom ❤️

mabell Jack is really a skunk from the beginning! Often the “shocking rake” turns out to be the hero, (his character is just misunderstood 😄) but in this one the scandalous flirt continues to sink in our estimation, in tandem with Freddie‘s rise. So perfect. ❤️ 1y
Tamra Gorgeous! 1y
deirdrebeecher This is one of my favourite Georgette Heyer books. There is so much humour in it. I especially like Freddie's relationship with his father. 1y
See All 9 Comments
mabell @Tamra I loved it! Such an artful, but casual arrangement 1y
mabell @deirdrebeecher I agree! I am enjoying their exchanges so much! I didn‘t remember them from previous listens, but his father‘s dry wit, especially as to Freddie‘s capabilities 😄, is perfect! 1y
CarolynM Oooh, if this is your favourite I‘ll have to bump it up my Heyer TBR 🙂 I‘ve just finished The Black Moth and I have this one next (edited) 1y
rubyslippersreads I ❤️ this one too. 1y
mabell @rubyslippersreads It‘s been years since I listened to it, so while I remembered the plot, the details were fresh - such a good time! 1y
mabell @CarolynM Oh yes, definitely bump it up! I can‘t wait to hear what you think! I must say I have so many romances still to read - including both of the ones you mentioned! How was The Black Moth? 1y

Kitty's guardian proclaims his fortune will be bestowed on Kitty if she marries one of his great-nephews. They both expect that Jack Westruther will present himself as a suitor but he doesn't show. So, Kitty persuades Freddy to agree to a fake engagement.

Kitty and Freddy are adorable and the crazy scrapes and confusions of the secondary characters are such fun. I can't wait to forget it enough to read it again.

Re-reading it. Don't remember it being a favorite back then. But now I love it. Freddy, with his slow change from empty-headed dandy to guardian of various hapless people, is completely satisfying.

I‘m still on the fence about COTILLION. I almost drifted away from it last night, but then I read some reviews that indicated it DOES follow the same basic trajectory as a modern fake dating book, and I got curious as to how it‘d play out. Because as of 54%, that endgame still didn‘t seem plausible.

I‘m now 63% in and it‘s only a little more plausible. Factor in how it took me all frickin day to read that 9%, and... yeah. I dunno, y‘all.

Gillyreads This is one of my favourite Georgette Heyer books 4y
xicanti @Gillyreads it seems to be a lot of people‘s favourite, but I‘m afraid I did end up bailing on it. 😔 4y

COTILLION passed the three-chapter test! The first chapter and a half was pretty rough, but I warmed to it once Kitty herself took the stage. Still, Freddy‘s tendency to speak in abbreviated bullet points might‘ve pushed me away again if I weren‘t curious to see if this 1953 release handles the fake engagement trope the same way a contemporary book might.

TL;DR—I like it lots more than THE GRAND SOPHY, but I still ain‘t totally sold.

Unpopular opinion time: the first Georgette Heyer I tried bored me silly. That was a good ten years ago, though, and I‘m hoping the person I am now will like COTILLION a lot more than the person I was then liked THE GRAND SOPHY. Let the three-chapter test commence!

While I have to admit that, on the romance side, I prefer Heyer's charming rakes and haughty Corinthians to lovely but slightly dim Freddy (shocking admission! Must be queer in my attic!) this was probably the funniest I've read so far. A hilarious, farcical romp full of adventurers and entanglements. Oh, Georgette, I love you so!

#24in48

I had no idea Regency Romance was a genre, but I‘m really enjoying Cotillion.

This is my realistic TBR stack for this weekend.

Aimeesue I'm not really a romance reader, but if you like the Regencies, Georgette Heyer is the Queen Mother of Regency and Georgian romances. She pretty much originated them, and wrote for 50 years or so. 😄 6y
Ashley_Nicoletto I really enjoy a good regency every now and then. There's so many types of romance and I love it. 6y

There is not one, but two, couples who run away to be married in Cotillion. The second, a thrilling and unlikely, #elopement, is part of the action-packed conclusion. The betrothed pair elope - with assistance - to a Reverend cousin, as a "journey all the way to Gretna Green would not have done."

First read years ago, this was my first Regency romance, and I enjoyed it SO much.

LeahBergen @mabell @rubyslippersreads Wait! I HAVE read this one. I should really make myself a list. 😂😂 7y
mabell @LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads That is hilarious 😂 In your defense, I find Heyer titles often don't obviously connect to the plot 🤔 7y
CrowCAH Lots of loose women getting married! Lol 7y
LeahBergen @mabell They don‘t! I‘m pretty good with the ones titled with the main characters names - I can remember if I‘ve read those. 😂 That got a bit tricky when I was buying all I could find at book sales though (Arabella, Venetia, Frederica and so on 😂). 7y
mabell @LeahBergen I was just looking at a list - she wrote so many Regency romances! I definitely would lose track. Her 12 mysteries are much easier to remember 😆 But even then I still have to stop and think which title matches with which plot! 7y
LeahBergen @mabell And the titles of a couple of her mysteries have been changed, too, I think. I recently saw Envious Casca republished as A Christmas Party. 🤔 7y

Jumping in late to #SeasonsReadings2016 because I have #MultipleCopies of most Georgette Heyer titles. She's my favorite author, and about 15 years ago I filled up a suitcase with Pan paperbacks in England when she was still OOP in the US. But I can never resist the pretty new reprints or occasional collectible hardbacks when I see them!! Last year I realized I owned more than 130 of her 65 titles, so I winnowed to no more than 2 copies of each.
