The Kindest Lie
The Kindest Lie: A Novel | Nancy Johnson
"Race, class, family and secrets are all on a collision course in Johnsons extraordinarily moving, timely read.... A gloriously written, stunning heart scorcher about who we are and what we could be." Caroline Leavitt, New York Times bestselling author of Pictures of You and Cruel Beautiful World "In The Kindest Lie Nancy Johnson takes us both into a bygone time, the dawning of the Obama era, and into the tender heart of her protagonist Ruth. This is a novel that seeks to discover the beauty of our journeys despite the lies we tell each other and ourselves." Rion Amilcar Scott, award-winning author of The World Doesn't Require You and Insurrections For fans of Tayari Jones and Jacqueline Woodson, a thought-provoking, page-turning debut about race, class, identity, and the pursuit of the American dream. A promise could betray you. Its 2008, and the rise of Barack Obama ushers in a new kind of hope. In Chicago, Ruth Tuttle, an Ivy-League educated black engineer, is married to a kind and successful man. Hes eager to start a family, but Ruth is uncertain. She has never gotten over the baby she gave birth toand abandonedwhen she was a teenager. She had promised her family shed never look back, but Ruth knows that to move forward, she must make peace with the past. Returning home, Ruth discovers the Indiana factory town of her youth is plagued by unemployment, racism, and despair. While her family is happy to see her, they remind her of the painful sacrifices to give Ruth a shot at a better futurelike the comfortable middle-class life she now enjoys. Determined, Ruth begins digging into the past. As she uncovers burning secrets her family desperately wants to hide, she unexpectedly befriends Midnight, a young white boy who is also adrift and looking for connection. When a traumatic incident strains the towns already searing racial tensions, Ruth and Midnight find themselves on a collision course that could upend both their lives. The Kindest Lie examines the heartbreaking divide between black and white communities and plumbs the emotional depths of the struggles faced by ordinary Americans in the wake of the financial crisis. Capturing the profound racial injustices and class inequalities roiling society, Nancy Johnsons debut novel offers an unflinching view of motherhood in contemporary America and the never-ending quest to achieve the American Dream.

I had no idea what I was getting into when I picked up this book. It was a hand me down from my mom. Turns out, it‘s a story about race and class. I wasn‘t sure I wanted to continue to read it at first, but I kept going and am glad that I did. It wasn‘t an action packed book, it just was a story about life. I enjoyed getting to know the characters. All in all, this was a very good debut novel.

The past couple of years, I participated in a lot of book clubs, always trying to read the books. But looking back to my 2023 reading, I must confess being disappointed. So my New Year resolution is to only read books that I'm interested in.
This book, for example, I knew it wouldn't be a pick for me, and my instinct was correct for most of the books picked by my book clubs.
Now, I'm sure 2024 will be a more rewarding year for my reading.

I‘ve got 12 books ready to go for clearing off my TBR in 2024, one month at a time! I‘ve had some of these for a very long time and always put them at the back of the list. Some will also be for #ReadOrDonate @julieclair - thanks for inspiring me to tackle the TBR!

4-6-22: My 32nd finished book of 2022! 2008, Obama has just won the presidency. Ruth Tuttle, an Ivy-League educated black engineer is happily married and her husband is itching to start a family. But Ruth harbors a secret. She had to give up a baby at the age of 17. She promised she would never look back but now has decided to return home to Indiana to seek her son out. ⭐️⭐️⭐️📖#️⃣3️⃣2️⃣

I love the setting and overarching themes of this book: set in 2008, just as Obama was first elected, this ambitious debut deals with race, class, parenting/motherhood, and personal responsibilities. I was often frustrated with main character Ruth, who is bright and successful, but just so selfish and prone to really dumb decisions as a grown woman, and didn‘t find Midnight‘s narrative very believable, but this was an overall pick.

⭐️⭐️⭐️1/2

Set in 2008 after the first election of Barack Obama, a black woman returns home to face her past only to find that the racial and social tensions of her childhood still persist. The Kindest Lie considers a monumental achievement in black American history (the election of the first black president) against the unfortunate, but persisting backdrop of a racially divided town. Was 2008 a sign of changing times, or did it exacerbate an uglier truth?

I fell into this one. I‘m never sure if it‘s my current mood when I start a book or the quality of the story itself that makes me fall hard. Maybe it‘s a little bit of both, but Ruth‘s story grabbed me. The pieces of ourselves we hold close - do we have a right to let them go - or not - as we see fit. I loved how this book explores that question.

I tried I really did. But this book was such a chore. Johnson‘s themes and ideas really interested me but the execution was subpar. I really didn‘t care for the characters. I felt like I knew them in the beginning but as the story went on the characters felt more and more unlikable. Maybe I‘ll revisit because I didn‘t absolutely hate it but after a string of books I couldn‘t stop thinking about this really wore me down.

I really wanted to love this book. I had such high hopes but it just didn't deliver. I didn't like any of the characters. The author really missed the mark.

The book is set in the period between Obama being elected and his inauguration. The author does a good job of reminding us all that what BLM was protesting about this summer has been here all along. Long before cell phone videos and body cams.

I appreciated the themes of race, class, and motherhood in this book, but it didn‘t pack the punch I expected. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This was a really beautiful story. I really felt Ruth‘s pain. I could understood how much shame and guilt you can feel because of one mistake you made and being afraid what your loved ones think of you because of that mistake. The book also represented systemic racism really well. I highly recommend this one. This was my #bookspinbingo No 5 pick.

TheBookHippie I loved this I read it as an ARC. 🤍 4y
mollyrotondo @TheBookHippie I read it in two days. It was really really good. I‘m glad I got this one in my February BOTM box. I think it‘s pretty close to the tagged book below as far as the panic and pain in my chest feeling this book caused which to me means this book was excellent in getting an important point across about racism and what examples we set for children in this country. 4y
TheBookHippie @mollyrotondo I liked this one far better than that one. I read it last November but the character Midnight is exactly like a child I currently mentor so it really had me. I‘ve not read what I experience daily so vividly with my kids in a while ... 4y

This was very close to a lukewarm Pick, but the MC was horribly selfish and continued to make horribly selfish and harmful decisions right up to the end, with the last terrible decision keeping this a So-So. The story in general started out VERY slow. I liked enough to see what the author publishes in the future, but this book was meh for me. #BotM

I just can‘t connect with the material at all. Sometimes I enjoy uncovering lives different than my own, but her reactions to her martial crisis and giving up her child for adoption just don‘t make sense to me. Also, some points were belabored enough to drive me batty!

@Librariana was nice enough to provide some explanation as to libraries‘ Libby purchasing habits on my last post about this book. A must-read if you‘re a big Libby user.

To continue the convo, the tagged book is from a library that is a small city in IN. Two people passed on it before it came to me. I had been watching the line. That‘s how I knew. It follows the rules you mentioned in the last post and that‘s really helpful to know. Cont...⬇️

Megabooks ⬆️ @Librariana The Diviners (bottom right) is from a statewide e-library, of which my county is a member. There are some books, despite popularity, that they purchase very few copies of. Why? What is the difference? 4y
Megabooks ⬆️ Also, I hate it when Libby stresses me out about a line. I will get to the Abbi Waxman. Chill Libby. 4y
KVanRead I hate that ‘people are waiting‘ thing too. I had to wait, they can wait too.😂 4y
See All 15 Comments
Librariana Makes me wonder if the other users who passed on it used the "Deliver Later" feature ? That should keep their spots at the top of the list/queue, but allow for others to check out the title. There's also the "Lucky Day" feature (don't know about this one as much, but it's pretty neat when it happens!) which lets you check something out immediately. 4y
Librariana Many folks don't know that they can suspend their holds so that they don't get an avalanche of titles all at once, although I know you're a phenomenal reader @Megabooks and will probably get through all of your check outs in a very reasonable time. 4y
Librariana As for the number of copies purchased, I have to go back to budget. Some libraries have a digital budget and each e-license purchased (per format!) can sometimes be anything from $30 - $60 (or higher!)(I'll check next time it's my turn to do the purchasing.) 😊 My library has to consider if we've bought physical copies of an item before deciding on digital quantities. 4y
Librariana I am also NOT a fan of Libby's "people are waiting" script. UGH! ? 4y
Librariana Lastly, I know our selectors have access to reports we don't which alerts them to holds queues growing and to demand for a specific title. I shared the 4:1 ratio info, but sometimes (again, based on budget), we may have to increase the ratio to 8:1. I know for President Obama's book we bought 34 eAudio licenses and 5 physical Book-on-CD copies. For the e-Book, we bought 25 licenses and 37 physical copies 😊 4y
Librariana I just checked on my Libby hold for that title specifically (e-Audio format) and I'm number 167 on the holds queue with 5 people waiting per copy. It's possible we may buy a few more licenses to meet demand. I'll find out on Friday when I go back to work since it'll be my OverDrive week 😁 4y
Megabooks @Librariana yes, I purposefully checked out most of these titles knowing how many I‘d have. 😂😂 most are 6-12 hour books which I can finish in a dayish. I pretty much listen all day at 2.2x! Thank you for giving me all this wonderful information. You‘ve definitely given me tools to make smarter e-listening choices! 4y
Megabooks @KVanRead right?!? 4y
Librariana You're my hero! ??? The fastest I can have an e-Audiobook is 1.20 ? It definitely takes me longer to get through them, but that's ok. Oh! I meant to tell you that I happened upon a "skip-the-line" copy of President Obama's e-Book and it allows for a 14-day check out with no renewals. It's a neat Libby feature! And I'm glad I could share a bit of info! ? I know I don't have all the answers, but I'm delighted to help to the best of my ability! 4y
Megabooks @Librariana thank you so much! I really enjoyed President Obama‘s book, but I think it took me 3 days to finish because it was 29 hours. 😃 And counterintuitively (to most) I pay better attention at faster speeds, so I don‘t think I‘d take away as much slower. I‘m weird! 4y
Kimberlone I use the deliver later option a lot since I am usually very unlucky with several holds coming in at the same time. My Libby is a statewide database which results in very long wait times unless I am lucky and catch books when they first get added and can borrow immediately or get on the wait list at the very beginning 4y
Megabooks @Kimberlone my mom only uses the statewide database, and she reads less often than I do. She uses the deliver later frequently as well. I‘m more likely to use deliver later on ebooks, which I don‘t read as quickly. I have Michael J Fox‘s ebook on deliver at the end of February. I also put the rest of my audiobook holds on hold until I can get through some of the ones I have checked out!! 😂😂 4y

candority This happens to me all the time too! I‘m wondering if it is something to do with Libby, not other users? Maybe Libby only has one copy available when a title is first added, so when the additional copies are added, you get your hold right away? I don‘t know for sure, but that makes more sense to me than multiple people immediately giving up on a book! 4y
See All 18 Comments
TheKidUpstairs I feel like if anyone can get through that many before they're due, it's you! This sort of thing happens with my OverDrive due to libraries sharing copies. If it is my library who buys the ebook, it can bump me up the line of the others who requested are members at other libraries in the consortium. 4y
Megabooks @rachelm thanks! I think I can, at least, read the one with lines.🤞🏻 4y
Megabooks @Simona exactly! 4y
Megabooks @candority that‘s possible, but unlikely at my particular library. It‘s a large town/small city library that rarely gets more than 2 copies of any book, especially on audio. 4y
Megabooks @TheKidUpstairs yes, I have 2 libraries. The one I get most new releases from is the large town one, but the other library is a statewide library and it has that policy. (One library is in Indiana, the other in Kentucky.) 4y
Eggs Good luck 🍀 4y
RonniKlein I got this in my BOTM box!! 4y
Librariana @candority @Megabooks - doing the OverDrive (Libby) purchasing is one of the things I get to do at my library 😊 Our selectors (collection development librarians) put together the list of titles and the holds queue determines how many copies we order (they work on a 4:1 ratio - 4 customers waiting per copy.) Each library is different, of course, based on budget. But if our holds queue calls for it, we do order multiple copies. 4y
Librariana @candority @Megabooks - I'm speaking for a 🇺🇸 library, so not sure how it might work for libraries elsewhere in the world 😊 There's also the OverDrive lending models to consider... if it's a OC/OU (one copy, one user) or MA (metered access). With metered access, we get a certain number of checkouts before needing to renew the license. Working behind the scenes at the library is one of my life's greatest little joys 🥰 4y
Librariana @Megabooks - Sorry to've left all of that in your comments, Meg, but best of luck 🍀 with your multiple titles! Enjoy! 4y
Megabooks @Librariana thank you for the explanation!! I‘ve made another post with a question and tagged you. I didn‘t know about metered access, so I‘m glad to find out about that!!! I was just familiar with the OC/OU. 4y
Megabooks @Eggs thanks!! 4y
Megabooks @TheKidUpstairs and thank you for the vote of confidence!! 4y
Megabooks @RonniKlein I hope you enjoy it!! 4y
Librariana I was about to go reply on that post! 😁 Thank you for tagging me! 😊 Right before we make our purchases, there is an agreement list we have to check ✔ off as different publishers have different check out rules for metered access. It's all very interesting stuff! 4y

FeatherV @Lisas.Library haha I know it‘s so hard choosing 4y
EKonrad I had to pick the Kristin Hannah one but Girl A sounds really good. 😊 4y
BooksCoffeeNurse For me it was between Kristin Hannah and Girl A. However, I was at B&N right before I ordered and they had both books you chose there, and Girl A looked too good to pass up. 4y
Lisas.Library @EKonrad ~ I might get the Kristin Hannah in March if it‘s not sold out!! @BooksCoffeeNurse ~ Both seem to be very popular picks this month. 4y

Pickpick

I enjoyed this debut novel. This story revolves around a family secret which leads to the unraveling of others. The secrets and how they unfolded were fairly obvious (there were not multiple possibilities really) which took away from the suspense, but, ultimately, not the story. #ARC #LibraryThing #EarlyReviewer
