Great and poignant book. I loved all the different mother and daughter relationships. This is a good companion to The Grapes of Wrath.

“As we know, there are lessons to be learned from history. Hope to be derived from hardships faced before. We've gone through bad times before and survived, even thrived. History has shown us the strength and durability of the human spirit, In the end, it is our idealism and our courage and our commitment to one another--what we have in common--that will save us.”

Oh this already has some great nuggets in it! It‘s set in Dalhart just a few miles from where I grew up! But I wasn‘t alive for the Great Depression … which makes this all the more interesting!

Four Winds came back early !!!! I had requested a hold on it when it came in. I got the large print edition ... Librarian said it must be popular book, he has 4 going out today! I'm also reading All the Forgiveness - had it already checked out. I've got lots of reading to do now!

MelAnn Bailed on the other book... It was written in poor Appalachian dialect and I just can't ... 2mo

Thoroughly enjoyed this one. It moves at a slower pace which seems appropriate and works for the setting and time of this one - The Great Depression.

Can you tell I am ready for fall? 🍁 🍂 Too bad it‘s 90 out and Maya‘s school AC has been broken for 2 days! 😫

This was the first book I‘ve read by Kristin Hannah, and I loved it! I will definitely be reading more of hers. When in the right mood, because this was pretty much depressing from the first page to the last. You definitely need a box of tissues next to you with this book!

This is not an uplifting read. I struggled with the first half of the book and then got into it a little more. It is depressing that we still struggle with the issues facing the characters in this book.

I loved this book - historical fiction set during the Great Depression/Dust Bowl. It drew me in from the very beginning. What a difficult experience to live through. I am all in on books with strong women, especially moms. And I REALLY like strong moms who don‘t whine. The teenage daughter was not exactly likable, but seemed real to me. They are called the Greatest Generation for a reason.

I honestly love anything Kristin Hannah. I love that you don‘t feel like you are reading the same story over and over. She is very diverse. This one takes place during the depression/dust bowl days and a woman‘s determination for the survival of her family.

I can‘t say enough good things about this story. It was both educational and captivating. It gave voice to what some Americans suffered during a discouraging and hopeless period of history. It was a moving piece of fiction, not just about those affected, but also about Elsa, her family, and the ups and downs they suffered at no fault of their own. If you love historical fiction based on real life events, I cannot recommend this book enough to you.

The Four Winds is undemanding reading, as Kristin Hannah books always are. A lot happens, which makes it fairly propulsive reading. There‘s some pretty commendable construction of setting, and it‘s this that I enjoyed the most. The oppressive and inescapable atmosphere of life in Dust Bowl America during the Great Depression is well captured. If you need an easy read you could do worse than this.

CoverToCoverGirl Such a good book. 🤩 8mo

An epic story of Elsa, born to parents who never loved her. During the Dust bowl, we learn about the unbelievably horrendous conditions farmers faced. The description of the dust storms was riveting. The book starts at a slow- medium pace, but by the final third I couldn‘t put the book down. I learned a lot about the strength and resilience people possessed in abominable circumstances. Bravo to Ms. Hannah!

Hannah knows how to turn ordinary folk into extraordinary folk--warriors, even. This is a story of victims of the Dust Bowl. It's a story of survival & being a mother. Learning to love yourself can take a lifetime. Elsa, using those around her as a mirror, discovers who she is in the midst of protecting her children from a dangerous world. For me, some of it was slow & drug on at times, but the end had me racing through pages.

I love Kristin Hannah, I really do... and this was a beautifully written story. But her books are getting harder and harder to read. This was a downer until the very end. I‘m gonna say it‘s a pick...but be prepared 😒

Annie1215 I‘ve never read any of her books but her name comes up often. Any recommendations for which ones to read? 8mo
Tiffiney The Nightingale and Winter Garden are both really good. Firefly Lane, which was made into a tv show, is also a good one. The Great Alone...pretty much anything she writes is gonna be good...just prepare for all the feels to happen 😁 8mo

If you have not read Kristin Hannah - you should. The Four Winds is a great place to start. Historical Fiction that follows the life of Else in the Texas panhandle. Born just before the turn into the 20th century, just in time to come of age during the roaring 20‘s then the Great Depression into the center of the dust bowl. The novel is full of heart, but tears at your heart just the same. Thanks to Netgalley. Best fiction I‘ve read this year.

I'm a Midwest girl that grew up listening to stories from the Greatest Generation. Their fortitude, voice, & determination prevailed. The novel is set during the Depression. The Martinelli family joined the migrant Exodus to CA in need of feeding their family but was faced with trials of survival, prejudices, seasonal work, tent camps, and unbearable circumstances. A great read that captured the worst environmental disaster in our history.

Texas, 1934. I found this book slow in the beginning but picked up soon after. Loved the history of the dust bowl days and the Great Depression. A very heartbreaking story. Although this book was written well, I think I enjoyed all her other books more. I just could not connect with the characters. If you have never read Hannah‘s books, don‘t start with this one.

Aims42 This was my first Kristin Hannah book and I loved it! I had ‘Wintergarden‘ on my TBR pile for a couple of years so I immediately started it after ‘Four Winds‘. Now I know to always have a box of tissues nearby LOL 9mo
AmyReadsAlot I have never read a Kristin Hannah book and this is the one I bought to start my journey. 😂 fingers crossed I like it. 9mo

Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s the one. Loved it but that lead to a lot of tears. Not sure why not read more. That was a great group read. 9mo
EadieB @Andrew65 Her books remind me of Lisa Jewell but Jewell I think is a better writer. 9mo
Andrew65 @EadieB That‘s an interesting comparison. 9mo
EadieB @Andrew65 Jewell‘s books also have more mystery and intrigue and I think that‘s what‘s lacking in Hannah‘s books. They are more fiction than mystery. 9mo
Crazeedi @EadieB thanks Eadie! I hear you about the author. I don't really need the mystery but I do like cohesion and a well paced story line. I read a book a while ago about dust bowl, I think a NF. It was eye opening 9mo
EadieB @Crazeedi The only one I read about dust bowl was Grapes of Wrath but my mom was born in Kansas and she told me things about what it was like. 9mo
Crazeedi @EadieB I'm trying to remember the book. Now it's going to bug me till I remember. 9mo
Andrew65 @EadieB I‘d agree on the one I read, more about the story than any mystery. 9mo
Andrew65 @EadieB Grapes of Wrath is the only one I‘ve read. 9mo
Andrew65 Also read Of Mice and Men but don‘t remember it being about the Dust Bowl. 9mo

A wonderful tale of human endurance and perseverance against the extreme vagaries of nature and callous administration! Added to that, is the abhorrent social ostracisation from the affluent to the deprived and the entire scenario becomes hopeless and painful....😭

This is my first Hannah , a compelling story , but when the main bad guy is the dust bowl paired with the Great Depression, your heart aches with the family as they struggle to survive. The promise of a better life in California is as difficult & unlikely at best .There is a depression story in my family, a relative worked all day at a new job & was paid w/an IOU!They fared better as they were farming further north & could raise their own food.

ZoeJane620 Be sure to check out her other books! She has so many good ones. The Nightingale, Firefly Lane (just came out as a Netflix series!), The Great Alone, and Night Road are a few of her best ones. 9mo
