You Have a Match
You Have a Match: A Novel | Emma Lord
41 posts | 46 read | 28 to read
A new love, a secret sister, and a summer she'll never forget. From the beloved author of Tweet Cute comes Emma Lord's You Have a Match, a hilarious and heartfelt novel of romance, sisterhood, and friendship... When Abby signs up for a DNA service, its mainly to give her friend and secret love interest, Leo, a nudge. After all, she knows who she is already: Avid photographer. Injury-prone tree climber. Best friend to Leo and Connie...although ever since the B.E.I. (Big Embarrassing Incident) with Leo, things have been awkward on that front. But she didnt know shes a younger sister. When the DNA service reveals Abby has a secret sister, shimmery-haired Instagram star Savannah Tully, its hard to believe theyre from the same planet, never mind the same parents especially considering Savannah, queen of green smoothies, is only a year and a half older than Abby herself. The logical course of action? Meet up at summer camp (obviously) and figure out why Abbys parents gave Savvy up for adoption. But there are complications: Savvy is a rigid rule-follower and total narc. Leo is the camps co-chef, putting Abby's growing feelings for him on blast. And her parents have a secret that threatens to unravel everything. But part of life is showing up, leaning in, and learning to fit all your awkward pieces together. Because sometimes, the hardest things can also be the best ones.

I enjoyed this one (not as much as Tweet Cute) about a teen, Abby, who takes a DNA test and finds out she has a full-blooded older sister she never knew about. The two meet and scheme to spend a month at summer camp (where the older sister is a camp counselor) so that they can get to know each other and why they never knew about each other. Oh, and Abby‘s secret crush also works at the camp, complicating her summer plans!

While “You Have a Match“ held the potential to be a touching and poignant tale, it didn't quite reach the emotional heights I was hoping for. The lack of depth in character development, predictable plot twists, and rushed conclusion left me feeling unsatisfied by the end.

I adored this book. It was just what I needed. I liked Tweet Cute a lot, but this one exceeded it for me, which I was not expecting. It gave me just the right amount of feels. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Despite the obvious intrigue of the whole secret full sister concept, I found this book, above anything else, boring and flat. I spaced out plenty and never felt excited to open it. The first half with Abby getting mad and enacting revenge on Savvy for just doing her job felt petty and escalated the situation way more than it needed to be. 3⭐️

There was waaay too much drama. The main why in the family storyline was creative, but I got lost because every three pages was a new argument or mess between the characters. Like fights within fights. Didn‘t grasp me like Tweet Cute & the Leo subplot also felt like it was going nowhere

Abby is a high school student who's in love with her best friend. After she takes a DNA test, she discovers she has an Instagram-famous, full-blooded sister that she knew nothing about. The two arrange to spend the summer together by attending/working at the same camp. Shenanigans ensue.

I was drawn into this story. I didn‘t know until after i read it that it was a Reese's Book Club YA winter pick for 2021, but I can understand why. As a former summer camp kid, turned camp counselor, the predominant setting of this book really appealed to me. But, the conflict in this story would have kept me engaged either way. Although the ending was easily predictable, it was the ending I was rooting for, so I'll forgive the predictability.

I just love that this book is really about Abby and Savvy's relationship more than anything else. Major Parent Trap vibes, but also an excellent coming of age for them both. #yalit #reread

I loved Tweet Cute so was excited to read another Emma Lord book. This one was still cute, but it didn't hold my attention the same way. There were too many storylines going on, and I wish it skipped the romance and just focused on Abby's and Savvy's sister relationship instead of adding Leo into it. The parent drama was also over the top. I liked in Tweet Cute that the parents were more immature than the kids, but it didn't feel appropriate here.

The story was slow through until the end. I liked the ending because all the relationships tie up nicely. I just wish there was more of a connection between Abby and Leo. Their relationship seemed kind of boring until the end. I did like Abby and Savvy‘s sister-relationship development. I also liked the LGBTQIA inclusion and how Lord worked it naturally in the story and not made it the center of it.

Abby and her friends take a blood test for fun. She didn‘t expect for her secret older sister, Savvy, to contact her. They concoct a plan to go to camp together without their parents knowing. She also doesn‘t expect to see her best friend/crush Leo to the same camp. Why did Abby‘s parents keep Savvy from her? Will Abby finally tell Leo how she feels about him?

I love a good YA book and this one did not disappoint. There were so many storylines that I was really invested in and they came to a nice conclusion. Took me a minute to get used to the way the author references something before she actually tells it to you but I learned to really enjoy it after I realized that I hadn‘t skipped over something. This was an adorable book and one that I would read again.

A cute “Parent Trap“-esque read. Comfortable, easy, & a great beach or escape read. The premise is unique, fun, & light despite addressing some grown-up topics. The characters are enjoyable, likable, & distinct. There is naturally presented diversity that doesn't feel contrived & is well-executed. I loved the relationships that developed, though the parental conflicts felt over the top. The writing is spunky & flippant, making the read very fun.

I picked this one up both because I enjoyed Tweet Cute by this author last year & because, as someone with an adopted sister, I am always on the lookout for adoption-positive stories. Unfortunately, something was just lacking for me with this one. It felt too long & somewhat cluttered - this should either have been about Abby & Leo, or Abby & Savvy, or Abby's bad grades - not about all of them. I think this would have been a much better story ⬇️

TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) without the romance aspect. There was so much potential here to explore complicated family dynamics, the reasons behind the adoption, the relationships between Abby & Savvy & between the two of them & their parents, but instead that all just got jammed into the bits in between Abby angsting for pages about what she should do with her feelings for Leo.

This wasn't a bad story & I think that fans of YA will probably find a lot to enjoy ⬇
3y
TheAromaofBooks (cont'd) but this one just wasn't for me.

TheAromaofBooks @sebrittainclark - Yes!! There was just too much going on. I definitely wanted more about the surprise sisters & less about Abby pining after Leo. 3y
Kaylamburson I completely agree, @TheAromaofBooks . It just had too many storylines, and it made the book long and drawn out. The Leo storyline felt like an afterthought and I wish it just focused on Abby and Savvy. The parent drama was just over the top, too. 2y
TheAromaofBooks @Kaylamburson - Right?? Sometimes a book is just not any good and I just kind of give a mental “whatever“ and move on after I read it, but other books annoy me because there is so much potential but not the follow-through, and that's what happened here. The whole adoption/surprise sister concept was so interesting & there was so much to explore about adoption & the emotional impact that has... & instead it just turned into YA drama. 😕 2y
Kaylamburson I completely agree, @TheAromaofBooks ! And also the parents didn't talk for like 15 years and then seemingly got over it in a conversation. All odd lol 2y

If there was a spot between soso and pick I would choose that. So many of the problems in this book could‘ve just been solved if the characters actually talked to each other and were open instead of angsting about everything. I wanted to love this book and parts were great but I got sooo frustrated at some of the interactions that I almost stopped listening a few times. I loved the growth between her and her sister.

I was obsessed with the Parent Trap, so I was super excited to read this novel about sisters secretly getting to know each other at summer camp. There are plenty of pranks pulled between these very different sisters, even as they work together to figure out why their parents kept the other's existence a secret.

It's a super cute book about family, friendship, love, summer camp, and sisterhood.

Yup, I definitely love Emma Lord novels! This was just as good as Tweet Cute, but brought a few tears to my eye at the end. The whole Parent Trap with a twist was a good plot device, better than I was worried it would be. And I loved the LGBTQ representation she threw in totally casually as well as the diversity of the characters! So well done, because they weren‘t in your face; just normal characters who happened to be Asian or gay!!!
