The Sanatorium
The Sanatorium | Sarah Pearse
EVERYONE'S IN DANGER. ANYONE COULD BE NEXT. An imposing, isolated hotel, high up in the Swiss Alps, is the last place Elin Warner wants to be. But she's taken time off from her job as a detective, so when she receives an invitation out of the blue to celebrate her estranged brother's recent engagement, she has no choice but to accept. Arriving in the midst of a threatening storm, Elin immediately feels on edge. Though it's beautiful, something about the hotel, recently converted from an abandoned sanatorium, makes her nervous - as does her brother, Isaac. And when they wake the following morning to discover his fiance Laure has vanished without a trace, Elin's unease grows. With the storm cutting off access to and from the hotel, the longer Laure stays missing, the more the remaining guests start to panic. But no-one has realized yet that another woman has gone missing. And she's the only one who could have warned them just how much danger they're all in . . . 'A seriously sinister setting, an incredible sense of place and a twisty, unpredictable plot combine to make an utterly terrifying read. I loved it.' Allie Reynolds 'What an incredible debut novel. Clever, creepy and utterly compelling.' Samantha King 'The tension is knife edge-sharp.' Michelle Adams

Probably should have bailed. But for reasons unknown to myself, I persisted. Maybe I hoped that the set-up, setting, & atmosphere would pay off. Snowed in, locked room-type concept in a stark minimalist hotel in the Swiss Alps? Good stuff, right? No. Nothing worse than contemporary thrillers where the formula is: hackneyed writing + unconvincing plotting + "big reveal" involving Serious Social Issue treated in the most asinine manner imaginable.

RaeLovesToRead Thanks for the heads up... from the set up sounds like all the things I'd love 😅 1mo
batsy @RaeLovesToRead Ticks all of the boxes in terms of what I love in a popcorn thriller, so I was disappointed, too! I don't ask for much, just guilty pleasure entertainment that isn't tedious and silly 😅 1mo

I made it most of the way but I don't care anymore

The mystery was ok but the characters were just annoying. Also, if you're giving your novel a creepy, ex TB sanatorium - now hotel setting....use it wisely. So much wasted potential here

#LittensDressedInBlood Today's prompt is Twin Peaks.

I read the book above this year, and it was definitely a thriller (or because of the snow, is it a chiller?) set in the mountains. As someone who has stayed in a boutique hotel that was once a mental hospital and then later a jail, this appealed to me. Thankfully, there was many roads out from my hotel, in case a killer struck.

📚: It is not always acceptable to use relevant social issues as “plot” points. Save your time and pick another book. The fragile female character, the time it takes the “detective” to figure out the link between the hotel‘s past and the current murders, the sloppy statement about serious topics impact women, and the loosely tied twists make this book a “do not recommend.” 🛑: torture (minimally discussed), sexual assault (minimally discussed)

I know that a lot of people were really unimpressed… and I didn‘t find one of the major “reveals” particularly surprising… but I still thoroughly enjoyed this. I listened to most of it on audio (1.5x speed), and read the rest. I don‘t know that I‘d call it gothic, though… more just a thriller/detective story in an interesting setting. Will get the 2nd!

Now reading The Silent Companions (eye-reading) and The Other Black Girl (audio).

A big disappointment with a ridiculous plot. I struggled to stay interested because Elin feels like a caricature of a woman in a scary movie. It‘s very hard to believe she is a detective. It‘s never good when a thriller makes you roll your eyes and yell, “Get there faster!” I felt like I had to keep reading to make sure my assumptions were right, but it lacked any sense of urgency & the plot was overly convoluted. It had promise, but it fell flat.

Suzze I almost bought this but read a couple of friend‘s reviews on GoodReads and decided against buying. 3mo

⭐️⭐️⭐️.5 The plot was great and I was consistently wrong guessing who the perpetrator was. I didn‘t give more stars just because I‘m not a huge fan of fragile female characters. I struggle to relate to them and fully engage with the story. Still would highly recommend if you‘re in the mood for solid thriller.

Just finished this twisty thriller, in time for #littensdressedinblood day 3!

But you know how sometimes there can be too many twists, manufactured just to throw the reader off the scent? I kind of got that feeling from this book.

Detective Elin, on leave after a traumatic interaction with a suspect, heads to an engagement party for her estranged brother at an exclusive resort built on the site of a remodeled sanatorium.

Decent suspense thriller. Elin is visiting her brother at a new hotel that was built from a sanatorium that housed tb patients. After arriving, her brother‘s fiancé goes missing, another hotel worker turns up dead. Elkins a deceive on leave, but starts investigating since the weather is making it impossible for the police to get to the hotel. Elin took a break for a reason. Is she trustworthy? Quite a few others are suspicious as well.

Poor Elin was a terrible detective (and she couldn‘t even figure out that her boyfriend sucks). The resolution and motive for the killings didn‘t feel believable and I didn‘t really connect with any of the characters. I was craving more atmosphere and complexity from this unique setting with a lot of potential. 🎧 #reesesbookclub

This book fell flat for me. Maybe I had too high of expectations for it, but I was bored or uninterested with this book 60% of the time. I love books based around sanatoriums or mental asylums, but there was absolutely no creep factor at all. You think abandoned assylum, there is gunna be some creepy stuff. But nope, none at all. And I found myself not caring about any of the characters. I think this book had a lot of ideas, poorly executed. 3/5

My expectations were way too high for this one. In my opinion, Reese‘s Book Club picks have been hit or miss and this was more of a miss. I found the book cover and descriptions to be gorgeous. By the middle of the book, I was intrigued. The ending fell way too flat for me. The reasoning did not justify the brutality of the murders. It felt rushed and forced. The epilogue left me beyond confused. It was only fair in my opinion.

Had a lot of potential! People stuck in a hotel that used to be a sanatorium, in the middle of the snowy nowhere, with a killer on the loose. However it was really slow at a lot of points and the whole subplot with Elin‘s family didn‘t really interest me. This was a fun read for #LMPBC though and I think this is the book that I‘ve written the most in.

This was a fun round. Amy I will mail this one and His&Hers out to you tomorrow ♥️

Ok. So this was an insane page turner for probably 7/8ths of the book. Suspenseful and creepy. Giving it a so-so because the end was DUMB. Dumb dumb. Took a turn that kind of made the whole thing meh. Some of the twist was great but the murderer reveal was kinda crap.

lynneamch My thoughts exactly. I was surprised that it was way more about the present day hotel and very little detail about when it actually had been a sanatorium. For historical fiction about women sent away to an asylum I recommend 6mo

Not bad for a debut. The writing style is fun & there is good suspense built into the atmosphere. I loved the premise, but it just didn't pan out how I imagined. I still had a fun time with my read. The tension was great until about the 1/3. After that the pacing somewhat dragged & I just lost my fervor for the plot. The twists were decent, but I did guess the ending. I will read Sarah Pearse again, but this was was just an okay read for me.

Interesting premise however it was lacking a few things and left me frustrated that the author didn‘t do more. The story and characters had a lack of depth also a lack of atmosphere which you need with books like this. Not enough thrills of suspense. I wanted this to be creepy and dark but it just wasn‘t
The story also isn‘t believable and the ending doesn‘t finish so I‘m wondering if there will be a sequel? Overall quite disappointing

This book has a lot of mixed reviews and I was kind of nervous to read it. Plus, a lot of thrillers fall flat for me because I end up guessing things. Well, that didn‘t happen to me with this book. I never guessed who did it and the twists. The book was well done, but it is a little on the slow side. I did enjoy it and it kept me very entertained with making me want to know what happens.
