@TheSpineView thanks for the tag @dabbe

1 I think the Wednesday before Labor Day
2 Oh, there‘s so many, tagged book, Old School by Tobias Wolf, Malory Towers, Gentlemen and Player, by Joanne Harris, In Memoriam, by Alice Winn, The Chalet school series, Skippy Dies by Paul Murray, I‘m sure I‘m forgetting others. I love a novel set in a school, especially an old English public school.

Care to play?

This was such a fun book to listen to on audio as Dan Stevens did a fantastic job narrating and bringing the cast of characters from Dahl‘s boyhood to life. This book consisted of vignettes from Dahl‘s childhood and it was neat to see where he got some inspiration for his many stories.

KCofKaysville @Ncostell I loved the book but just read it in print. It would be fun as audio. 😌 3y
Ncostell @KCofKaysville It‘s a quick listen, a little over 3 hours if you‘re ever looking for a short audiobook some day. 3y

I don't know whether Dahl had an interesting childhood that sparked his imagination and creativity, or whether his imagination and creativity is what made the story of his childhood interesting. Either way, fun "biographical" book.

megnews I enjoyed this a lot. You could really see his story inspirations in his experiences. 3y
limada I agree. Even in tiny things you can see where a story started. What an interesting mind he had. 3y

I enjoyed this autobiography of the childhood years of Roald Dahl and will be reading the continuation,Solo.
Although the tone does suggest that it was written for kids, I don't think the contents are really children appropriate. There's a lot of corporal punishment in the schools,an accident that almost leaves him without nose and a surgery that are very graphically explained. My nephews said they enjoy it anyway but they "don't like the teachers"

A glimpse into Roald Dahl‘s life as a Boy clearly shows the inspiration for such favorites as Matilda and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. As a narrator, Dan Stevens often makes you forget it‘s not Dahl himself narrating during this brief 3 hour jaunt into his childhood world. #OverBookedClub #MonthofMemoirs

Next up in audio: The Tragedy of Brady Sims by Ernest J Gaines

BookishMe I remember being a puzzled teenager when I read this. How it was so different from his usual fantastic plots... It must have taken me a decade before I realised it was his memoir! 😆 😆 5y
megnews @BookishMe in his introduction he calls it an autobiography but says it‘s different from most autobiography. It reads like a memoir so I‘m counting it for this month. You can see a lot of inspiration for Matilda in his various schools. 5y
BookishMe Yup... I would count it as a memoir too since it chronicles a stage in his life ;D 5y

Boy: Tales of Childhood is a (B) autobiography by Roald Dahl about his experiences growing up. I think this book would be great for an author study (AS) because it really helps you get to know Dahl and how his (funny and endearing) experiences shaped him and led him to write all of the books we know and love. Strangely enough, out of all the books of his I read as a child, this one about himself was my favorite! #LAE3414sp19

alexandracarpenter A UDL that I think would be good for this book is 7.2 (optimize ... authenticity) because Roald's experiences as himself led him to write his influential books. An EL strategy that would be good for this book is 28 - provide biographies of significant me and women from different countries (Roald grew up in the UK and talks about going to Norway a lot in the book). 6y
alexandracarpenter Lesson plans for this book can be found on Roald Dahl's website www.roalddahl.com/create-and-learn/teach/teach-the-stories/boy-tales-of-childhood-lessons 6y
cwright Omg. This is so cute. Not sure how how I just found out this existed but I need to read it immediately. And agreed, it would be so great for an AS! 6y

“If a child picks up a book, and likes it, that‘s not the end of it, you know. It‘s read at least four or five, sometimes fifteen times... and each time — it‘s got to stand up to that.” https://www.facebook.com/BBCArchive/videos/474625489577153/
I hated to learn that he was not the man of integrity I wanted him to be, and feel like, at least if I acknowledge the problems, I can appreciate the benefits. Matilda was so important to me as a child.

Boy: Tales of Childhood is a biographical novel written by Roald Dahl. This book could be used for AS and IR. Boy: Tales of Childhood details the life of Roald Dahl by beginning with his family‘s ancestry all the way until his first job as an adult. This novel brings together Dahl‘s life in the changing British 1920‘s and 30‘s, and sheds a light on the living conditions in Britain during that time. #ucflae3414f17

elifkelly This book could be used in a classroom to help students understand the biographical genre, and more specifically, all about an autobiography. The creativity of Roald Dahl makes this book an interesting read, which can help students understand autobiographies can be enjoyable http://www.roalddahl.com/docs/BoyLessonPlans_1506529555.pdf. 7y
elifkelly EL 28 Provide biographies of significant men and women from different countries aligns with this book as does UDL 7.2 Optimize relevance, value, and authenticity. Providing interesting examples of genres that aren‘t too popular with students can foster engagement. 7y
DrSpalding You need to add your lovely author study Glog as a resource too! Don't assume that biographies are not popular amongst students. Often times if they are exposed to the right ones, they will find them quite intriguing. 7y

So in June I am working at my part-time job, doing an internship, and taking a 5-week course. Thus, my time to read for fun this month is limited. But I ride the bus to my internship so I can read during that time. I wanted something easy, so I picked up this 175-page autobiography. I love it--funny and interesting! My work actually has an extended edition so I plan to check out and read the extra chapters of it when I finish this edition.

I'm catching up on a few missed posts for #feistyfeb! These are my books with #boyinthetitle. After I took the pic, I realized I should have included The Horse and His Boy! Oh well. China Boy, a semi-autobiographical novel, has been on my #TBR since the author spoke at the graduation ceremony for my publishing program... nearly 14 years ago. One of these days...

Louise I also really enjoy Dahl's short stories and novels for adults! They are wickedly funny! ❤️ 8y
GuiltyFeat I have deep affection for Dahl's books. They have shaped me and influenced me as much as any other author's works I can think of. 8y
GuiltyFeat On the other hand he was an unrepentant Jew hater... so swings and roundabouts. 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I've never read the witches because the small part of the movie that I saw absolutely terrified me as a kid... (The movie was put on at the end of the party and I'd never been happier to see my mum) 8y
Carol @GuiltyFeat oh damn, I had no idea. Conflict is raging right now inside me 💔 8y
Carol @Louise I will have to check those out! 8y
Carol @thegirlwiththelibrarybag oh man I refused to see that movie because it seemed like a bad idea. I hate it when you can't avoid movies. I read The Witches so much because it was one of the few non Nancy Drew books I had 😜 and at that age it was pretty much ND or gtfo. I was weird! 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @Carol, I've no idea how the movie actually is (I only saw a bit and it was wayyy above my comfort level in terms of scariness) not sure how old I was when I saw it (maybe 5 or 6) 8y

Charming tales from Dahl's about this most interesting man. He led a full life. Some of my favorite thoughts of his reflect on the difficult life as a writer towards the end of the book. Look forward to reading more from his middle years.
