Our WiFi goes out 3 days at a time. Instead of reading, I've been crocheting. I need to download an audio book before the next outage. I made myself start a book though. I think the Good Earth will get me out of this slump. Here's my first One with my first attempt at a blanket.

This is the story of a poor farmer who married a slave girl. Buck was the daughter of missionaries in the late 1890s through the early 1900s, and so I don‘t doubt she describes the average life of a poor man in #China, and the role of women. Perhaps it is so striking to know that the book may accurately describe the treatment of women then. The farmer, a hard worker with immense love of the earth, becomes prosperous thanks to his wife‘s stoic ⬇️

Texreader selfless sacrifices she makes to work the fields beside her husband up to the moments of giving birth. She was endlessly giving of herself. But the farmer only belatedly learned her value only after breaking her heart for years. I was hoping this was a story of love and sacrifice, but it became a story of what happens when a hardworking-successful man cares more about what others think than the one who saved him in the first place. #foodandlit 14mo

Did you know that The Good Earth is first in a trilogy? I didn‘t until I was searching for the #Booked2023 prompt. But this had been on my TBR since visiting one of her homes 20+ years ago. The story of the farmer Wang and how his life plays out over a lifetime was surprisingly hard to put down. While some aspects were hard to read, I really enjoyed this and am glad to FINALLY have read it.

Cinfhen I re-read this when my son was in HS and I COMPLETELY fell in love 🥰 I went on to read book two but it wasn‘t as good. I should probably read the final book - thanks for the reminder 😁 2y
JamieArc @Cinfhen I was tempted to read the next book because I liked this so much but I so too many reviews that said the same thing - the second just wasn‘t as good. 2y
Tamra I really loved this novel and have read it twice. 💜 2y

JamieArc @Tamra I was surprised by how much I liked it! I really should stop putting off reading books being I‘m intimidated by them or think they will be hard to get through! 2y
JamieArc @vivastory Welcome to now knowing this is a trilogy 😂 Unfortunately, while this book has stellar reviews, the other two do not. 2y
Tamra @JamieArc definitely! At the very worst you might bail, which is no biggie. 😉 (edited) 2y

Great book! I can‘t believe it took me so long to finally read it. I started the second book, but am not enjoying it at all which is strange because I read this one in a day, couldn‘t put it down. My husband is Chinese so I like books that give you a glimpse into the every day lives of Chinese people throughout history. Photo of one of our new gerbils, friendly little guy.

TiredLibrarian @Jaimelire I hated this book, but I think part of the reason was that I was too young when I read it (high school). I wonder if I'd feel differently about it now. Glad you enjoyed it. 3y
Jaimelire @TiredLibrarian I don‘t think I would have enjoyed at must when I was young. And I am really not liking the second at all. 3y

#inlaws #reviews #others An extraordinary insight into what people had to do to survive in pre-revolutionary China. The immense hardship & lack of any safety net is chilling, especially when one reflects that things are not so different for millions today, all over the world.

Ever read something considered classical cannon and feel incredibly grateful that no one forced you to read it in school? That was me yesterday when I finished this. I was so sure I'd like this, but nope. I found the story boring and all the characters unlikeable. It also took me forever to read, as I was easily distracted while reading it. I feel no desire to continue with the trilogy.

Final time for #24B4Monday, and a personal best. I finished a short comic book, and am about 65% deep into the tagged book. I didn't get to #NotYourPrincess like I wanted, but hope to today. It's due back to the library soon. I'm calling this a success, even though our family outing for shopping and haircuts took longer than I thought and I had to steal some time last night before midnight. Thanks for everything, @TheReadingMermaid & @Andrew65 !

Reading along with my friend's book club #RtC, but it is so hard for me to get into this one. Granted it is not an easy read to begin with, but the last few days have not been very inducive to reading. As if the sink drama was not enough (new faucet installed today), a scheduled overnight power outage sent us packing to a hotel. It was too cold last night to go without heat. Read a little last night when I couldn't sleep. That's about it.

This book surprised me in a few ways. Though set in the early 20th century, how little things have changed. The lives of the farmers, who are dependent on good weather and hard work; the aspect of humanity. The writing style is simple yet descriptive. An engaging rags-to-riches story of a hard working farmer and his obsession with the land.👇

#litsyclassics #g

erzascarletbookgasm Though set in the turbulent times of Chinese history, he‘s not touched by the changes sweeping across the country. One may criticise him but he‘s not unkind and only did the best he knew how. An excellent read of a different culture, well deserved the title modern classic. And with an ending like that, it makes me want to read the follow up. 6y

This graphic novel by Nick Bertozzi gives a makeover to Pearl S. Buck's 1931 Pulitzer Prize-winning classic about the rise and fall of Chinese villagers before WWI. I didn't realize I was requesting a comic/graphic novel adaptation. If I had realized this, I wouldn't have requested. That being said, I was pleasantly surprised. This actually works as a graphic novel and it will put this classic willingly into the hands of the YA audience.
