The Book of Questions
The Book of Questions: Revised and Updated | Gregory Stock Ph.D.
20 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
The phenomenon returns! Originally published in 1987, The Book of Questions, a New York Times bestseller, has been completely revised and updated to incorporate the myriad cultural shifts and hot-button issues of the past twenty-five years, making it current and even more appealing. This is a book for personal growth, a tool for deepening relationships, a lively conversation starter for the family dinner table, a fun way to pass the time in the car. It poses over 300 questions that invite people to explore the most fascinating of subjects: themselves and how they really feel about the world. The revised edition includes more than 100 all-new questions that delve into such topics as the disappearing border between man and machineHow would you react if you learned that a sad and beautiful poem that touched you deeply had been written by a computer? The challenges of being a parentWould you completely rewrite your childs college-application essays if it would help him get into a better school? The never-endingly interesting topic of sexWould you be willing to give up sex for a year if you knew it would give you a much deeper sense of peace than you now have? And of course the meaning of it allIf you were handed an envelope with the date of your death inside, and you knew you could do nothing to alter your fate, would you look? The Book of Questions may be the only publication that challengesand even changesthe way you view the world, without offering a single opinion of its own.

Happy Friday once again! Spring has sprung and I hope wherever you are, the weather is improving. This week‘s #bookishquestion is: do you prefer to read inside or outside? Tell me about your favorite reading spot! #booktalk

CSeydel Personally, I like *being* outside, but I struggle with finding the right lighting for comfortable reading. 2y
Bklover Inside, with a mug of tea and rain falling outside! 2y
Bookwormjillk Both! I really love when the seasons change and I have my first few reading sessions in my new spot- either on my front porch or inside under a blanket. 2y
See All 21 Comments
Mandoul I prefer outdoors if I can find somewhere comfy enough. Otherwise in a nice cafe with just the right amount of background buzz. 2y
MemoirsForMe Both! Inside under a cozy blanket when it‘s cold, and outside on the beach when the sun finally comes out! 2y
Susanita I like both! 2y
Angeles Outdoors if there is a good hammock or a confy lounging chair 2y
Ruthiella Inside! 2y
Tamra Best is outside in my camp chair beside a trout stream, 70F, in the mountain west. Ahhhh 😌 (edited) 2y
CSeydel @Bklover Cozy! 😍 2y
CSeydel @Bookwormjillk oh yes! This is me too! I like the variety. 2y
CSeydel @Mandoul nice! Yeah, I love the outdoor air but it does seem harder to get comfortable outside 2y
CSeydel @UwannaPublishme both is better! 2y
CSeydel @Angeles Oh man a hammock! I remember reading Jurassic Park in a hammock the summer after I graduated from high school. I haven‘t had a hammock in forever! 2y
CSeydel @Ruthiella Inside has much to recommend it! No bugs in my snacks! 2y
CSeydel @Tamra Sounds beautiful! 2y
Daisey It all depends on the weather, but outside when the weather is perfect is probably my favorite. 2y
Itchyfeetreader In winter I love curling up inside with a blanket and my book. In warmer weather outside of somewhere quiet will always win for me 2y
Blueberry Outside or inside WITH a view of the outside. 2y
mrp27 Both. Outdoors has to be at the beach, poolside or fireside while camping. Otherwise all indoors. 2y

We‘re a week into the new year, and we want to know: do you have any bookish resolutions for 2020? We‘re going to be giving each other bookish resolutions on the next podcast episode and we‘d love to hear about yours! If you leave a comment, we might even give you a shoutout and read it during the next episode 🙂 #EclecticQuestion

EclecticReaders @Andrew65 Woah, you‘ve got some serious reading ahead of you! 250 books is amazing!! 5y

EclecticReaders @Andrew65 Impressive!! 👏🏻 🎉 5y
Andrew65 @EclecticReaders Thanks 😊 5y
Amandajoy I felt last year was a little lackluster reading-wise (though there were a few standouts). This year I‘m hoping to read more books that I‘m excited about. I also want to try DNFing more books if I‘m not feeling them. 5y
BookNAround I‘m trying to read my way through the random stacks of books I‘ve made around the house. That will control the chaos, lessen the clutter, and move books off my own personal tbr mountain range. 5y
EclecticReaders @Amandajoy That‘s a great one! The books you read you should be enjoying, or you should give yourself permission to DNF! 5y
EclecticReaders @BookNAround Definitely a good one for so many reasons! 5y
annahenke Mine is to share them! I‘ve gotten lax about posting my reviews. I want to post on litsy, Insta, and FB. 5y
Jess_Franzino To listen to audiobooks on the regular. I realized that I enjoy listening to classics on Audible, so it‘s a great way to “read” the books I know the story of, but have never actually read. Plus, it‘s a great way for me to reach my Goodreads goal of 120 books, (if not more), as I can get books in while doing chores and running errands 😃 5y
EclecticReaders @annahenke Yay! Sharing is caring! 5y
EclecticReaders @Jess_Franzino Yes! Audiobooks are a game changer! 5y
Simona I am from Slovenia and influenced, mainly, by English speaking writers. The vast majority of books I've read are in English, and I want to change that in this year - to read more Slovene writers and to read more in Slovene language. 5y
EclecticReaders @Simona That is such a great resolution! Hope you find a lot of amazing books! 5y
IMASLOWREADER read every night before bed for at least 30 minutes 5y
EclecticReaders @MizDoniaBuding That‘s an awesome way to get in some reading time! 5y

Yes to putting in place rules so that men could have equal opportunities to women if the script were flipped.

We fight for equal opportunity for women, why wouldn‘t we do it for men?

The question is honestly getting it wrong. We shouldn‘t be trying to establish equality. We should be trying to establish equity for men & women, that says to me that both genders will have what they need to perform on the job to the best of their abilities.

With some of the current hardships and challenging situations of grief and loss I‘ve been navigating through, I‘d say no to the opportunity to be famous.

When you‘ve lost people in your life too soon as many times as I have, you value people over higher status in society way more.

Slajaunie I would say no. I like my privacy. 5y

No no no and NO!

To part one and part two of this question.

So ableist that it‘s even in here.

In sickness and in health. Period. End of story.
You made a lifetime commitment to that person and they made a lifetime commitment to you.
You don‘t just get to choose to peace out when circumstances become such that they aren‘t your ideal scenario.
That‘s not true love.

ljuliel In both cases you‘d have to look at it sensibly.Having previously worked in the medical field , either one of those conditions would demand round the clock care. Would I keep him at home ? No. We have a good care facility nearby. Logically, we‘re not rich, so would still need a paycheck coming in to provide that care, medication, equipment, etc. We‘ve been married 42+ years. I‘m in it til they cart me out in a box 📦..not THAT box ,this one ⚰️ 👇🏼 5y
ljuliel We‘ve discussed events such as this since we‘re old. I‘ve already told him to put me in a place where someone can be there with me, while he can still have a life. I wouldn‘t expect him to stay here 24/7. 5y

Yes, I‘d do it.

It‘d be a test to the relationship for sure, but you only truly know someone when your relationship is tested. So while the explained changes & challenges would be trying, being tested in this way would draw the two of us closer if the relationship is meant to last.

In regards to the language, ASL if it can be considered an official language (I think it should be!) but if that‘s out, probably French because it‘s gorgeous.

Question 11: If this one implies that officers will adjust their behaviors in regards to racism and use of excessive force while out on calls, I say yes, I‘m all for it. However, if you are back at the station doing desk work of some sort, I do not need you to show me those tasks.

Q12: Yes to the 100K.
Because there‘s no restriction as to how I could use my money to make me healthier while holding on to the 40 lbs.
100 lbs is asking too much.

BookNAround I can get paid to put on weight? I‘ve been doing it for free. 😂 5y
ljuliel #12. DOGGONE. I‘ve put on 40 pounds in the past few years. Wish someone would‘ve offered me the money to do it. I wouldn‘t put on any more. It‘s much easier to Add than Subtract. 5y
Amiable @BookNAround LOL! 😄 5y

I‘m gonna go with no on this one.

Hinting that it‘s genetically engineered makes me not trust the health of the heart from the pig or the pigs health prior to the transplant.

Too many uncertainties involved to make me feel confident that the new heart from the pig would ensure that I actually lived longer.

Differences of opinion? Explain your thoughts!

ljuliel First, I‘d have to meet the pig 🐖. I‘d need a better explanation from my doc on what they do with that pig to make it genetically engineered. Next, it‘d depend on my age at the time and where I was in life. If it were right now, I‘d probably say to let the pig keep his heart , I‘d order a last meal, and check out. But....on down the road , if my current annoyances were resolved, I‘d tell them to give the pig HIS last meal . I need his ❤️ 5y
Amiable Having seen first-hand what having a damaged heart in need of a transplant does to a family member while they sit around waiting for another person to lose their life so they can get that other heart, I say yes in a heartbeat (sorry 😬). If the genetically engineered pig can give me more time with my loved ones, I have zero issues with it. 5y
PirateJenny Absolutely. My dad had a valve from a pig and it gave us 5 more good years with him. And 2 more not so great ones. I eat meat. I don't believe in testing on animals for beauty--that's been done and we know what's safe. Not enough humans donate organs, so we need to get them where we can. (Yes, I am an organ donor.) 5y

Part one, I‘d make a plea for the people.
People‘s lives are more valuable than works of art, and people have the creative ability to create new works of art that will become important historical pieces that reflect their time and experiences.

Part two, same thing.
Those 1 million lives can create new music and literature that reflects the time they lived and the experiences they had.
There is no life that can‘t teach us something.

Nope.
No I would not.
It‘d take a lot of spite and hatred towards a person for me to turn around and hate on them like that.

Bookwormjillk No way. That kind of thing ruins lives. 5y
Laura317 Nope. I couldn‘t do it either. 5y
night_shift Things like this literally can destroy lives nowadays. Even if I couldn't get called out for doing it, I wouldn't. I'd feel too bad, even if they are a terrible person. 5y

ljuliel Nope. There may be people I have had differences with , but I think it‘d be pretty low to trash them online OR tell others a bunch of crap trying to get them to side with you. If you‘ve got an issue with someone, either confront them privately or keep your opinions to yourself. (edited) 5y
KathyWheeler I don‘t hate anyone that much to be that spiteful. There are people I don‘t care for, but I would never try to ruin their reputations either online or in real life. (edited) 5y

For the first part of this one, I don‘t know that I‘ve done anything that would‘ve gotten me into legal trouble.....
For part two, this is why I don‘t want to do jury duty. I‘ve been called for it once, but I don‘t want someone else‘s fate on my shoulders.

I would feel sad in both scenarios that technology is replacing the creative process and the beauty that can come from the human brain and heart when they work in accordance with one another.

wanderinglynn As to the second question, I wonder about that. More intelligent maybe. But more creative? I think that‘s an excellent debate point and a good thought experiment to discuss what is creativity and where does it come from. 5y

Outlawed.
I want to watch athletes accomplish their various feats by their own sheer will and strength, that‘s the beauty of any sport. You‘re watching what the human body is capable of when you put it to the highest test.

wanderinglynn Since countries/sports groups might pay big bucks for performance-enhancing drugs and that pharmaceutical companies develop drugs primarily to make a profit, what if I‘m developing these performance-enhancing drugs, pharmaceutical companies discovered cures or even treatments for serious diseases all stemming from performance growth-enhancing drug research? Diseases that might not otherwise get funding? Would that change your answer? 5y
Crazeedi @wanderinglynn very interesting scenario, positives and negatives to these situations 5y

I miss getting to connect and hear from you all directly on a regular basis.....so here we go again with daily questions.

For this one I‘d definitely say all motorized vehicles, as I‘ve only been a licensed driver for a small portion of my life. While I probably would not enjoy living without a car much, I know how to make it work. But I suppose there would be an added challenge because everyone else would have to do without them too. 🤷🏻‍♀️

TheReadingCompanion Easier to hold a book with two hands. 5y
BethM I live very rural so no vehicle would be difficult. 5y

Time for the bookish discussion question of the day 😁👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻! Here it is: Which book/book series that hasn‘t already would you like to see adapted into a tv series? #BookTalk

Leftcoastzen Lawrence Block Matthew Scutter 5y
TheSpineView I don't know about a series but I would love to see Recursion made into a movie. 5y
GypsyKat I would say the Daughter of Smoke and Bone trilogy, but they would need a HUGE special effects budget to do it justice. 5y

Leftcoastzen I wish they would have continued with Landsdales Hap and Leonard! 5y
AsYouWish I would say The Selection, and as a side note I would be over the moon if someone ever did the rest of the Vampire Academy books as either movies or turned them all into a tv series. 5y
Lizpixie Anita Blake! The original books, not the soft porn the last books have turned into though.🧛🏻‍♂️ 5y
Sha0102 The Grant county series by Karin Slaugher 5y
LapReader I would be beyond excited. 5y
SaunteringVaguelyDownwards @Leftcoastzen Yes! My husband and I really enjoyed that series, despite the violence and brutality. Haven't read any of the books yet, though. 5y
Leftcoastzen @SaunteringVaguelyDownwards love your handle , I read one of the books , it had the same spirit as the show, kitschy and snarky. 5y
