The Family Experiment
The Family Experiment: A Novel | John Marrs
8 posts | 8 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
From the acclaimed author of The One and The Marriage Act, The Family Experiment is a dark and brilliant speculative thriller about families: real and virtual. Some families are virtually perfect The world's population is soaring, creating overcrowded cities and an economic crisis. And in the UK, the breaking point has arrived. A growing number of people can no longer afford to start families, let alone raise them. But for those desperate to experience parenthood, there is an alternative. For a monthly subscription fee, clients can create a virtual child from scratch who they can access via the metaverse and a VR headset. To launch this new initiative, the company behind Virtual Children has created a reality TV show called The Substitute. It will follow ten couples as they raise a virtual child from birth to the age of eighteen but in a condensed nine-month time period. The prize: the right to keep their virtual child, or risk it all for the chance of a real baby Set in the same universe as John Marrs's bestselling novel The One and The Marriage Act, The Family Experiment is a dark and twisted thriller about the ultimate Tamagotchia virtual baby.

The votes are in, and the selection for November's #LSFBC #LitsySciFiBookClub is The Family Experiment by John Marrs. I read the blurb and it sounds interesting. Most of the reviews are favorable. I am looking forward to this book.

My library has both the ebook and the audio version. I looked on Amazon and the US price for the ebook is $14.99.

What a twisted, addicting novel. My first by John Marrs but definitely not my last. Marrs took two things I actively avoid (AI and reality TV) and made a compelling novel that starts out innocuous enough but grows in depth and darkness.

This book is set in the same near future world as “The One“, “The Passengers“ and “The Marriage Act“. In this a reality show has people who want to be parents raising virtual children in the metaverse, competing to win an IVF procedure. It was cleverly plotted with some great twists. As with the others, it was a thought provoking cautionary tale and I really enjoyed it. Marrs never lets me down. Thanks to Edelweiss+ for the digital ARC. 4.5/5!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️once again my go to author doesn‘t disappoint. Weaving social issues into his once again The One universe, this time with families hits all the right page turning spots

This audiobook was amazing! With a combination of story and mixed media we see a future where people can try raising a child from newborn to 18 in a matter of months virtually and see how this effects their lives for good and bad. It‘s surprising and more twisty than I was expecting and I loved the mix of sci-fi and thriller. Highly recommended! 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

John Marrs' writing captivates me. He writes about social issues in a speculative sci-fi setting. From terrorism and driverless cars to this novel about MetaChildren and human trafficking, his insight into his characters' motivations is always top notch. 5 stars

What a ride!!! This isn‘t my typical genre, but I enjoyed this (scarily realistic) novel! #thefamilyexperiment #johnmarrs
