Half-Resurrection Blues
Half-Resurrection Blues | Daniel José Older
FIRST IN A BRAND NEW URBAN FANTASY SERIES “Because I’m an inbetweener—and the only one anyone knows of at that—the dead turn to me when something is askew between them and the living. Usually, it’s something mundane like a suicide gone wrong or someone revived that shouldn’ta been.”   Carlos Delacruz is one of the New York Council of the Dead’s most unusual agents—an inbetweener, partially resurrected from a death he barely recalls suffering, after a life that’s missing from his memory. He thinks he is one of a kind—until he encounters other entities walking the fine line between life and death.     One inbetweener is a sorcerer. He’s summoned a horde of implike ngks capable of eliminating spirits, and they’re spreading through the city like a plague. They’ve already taken out some of NYCOD’s finest, leaving Carlos desperate to stop their master before he opens up the entrada to the Underworld—which would destroy the balance between the living and the dead.   But in uncovering this man’s identity, Carlos confronts the truth of his own life—and death.…

I've been looking for quotations recently, & remembered one of my favorite passages that is really an ultra short story.

The page previous Carlos walked into a Mexican Bakery.

“At the only other table in the place, an ancient mustachioed man in a Yankees cap plays Uno against an eight-year-old girl with pigtails.“

Hmmm… More gory than I expected. A complete job of world-building and singular characters.

Carlos is a half dead/half alive hunter of the things that create problems between the living and the dead. Life seems to pass around him until he‘s confronted his new target: the first other halfer he‘s met.

Hoped I would like this better in audio and years later, but I was still constantly annoyed with Carlos. And the romance was mostly one sided, “OMG She‘s hot, I‘m in love.†😒

Setting was amazing though. NYC breathed on the page. 🌕🌕🌗🌑

Lucy_Anywhere Yeh, this didn‘t work for me either - loved the setting but the pacing was odd and I never clicked with Carlos 4y

Urban fantasy for me is always a hit or miss, and this was a miss for me. I liked the way it celebrated the Caribbean diaspora in New York and I liked the concept, but the actual story was not great. The characters were poorly developed, the MC was weirdly incurious about everything, and the pacing was odd. And it had one of the most cringe worthy cases of instalove I've seen outside of YA.

I got in about 8 hours of reading today! 5 hours of it was audiobook listening while I got a bunch of stuff done! Then I figured I‘d done enough so it was okay for me to sit down with a book!

This book is definitely getting me in the Halloween spirit! Ghosts, Underworld, Council of the Dead 💀

Now the hubbies back, so its dinner and socializing the rest of the night.

It‘s really frustrating when I order a book from ThriftBooks and they send me an ARC.

Like I paid for a book, not an ARC... this is the 2nd or 3rd time this has happened to me.

(I don‘t care if it‘s a special comic-con version)

MidnightBookGirl Yeah, selling arcs is definitely sucky, but selling it to a buyer who doesn't know that it's an arc is especially egregious. 6y
RJHowe Totally inappropriate on their part 6y
minkyb Not acceptable. 6y
Nebklvr I would return it. They didn‘t say it was an arc…shoddy business practice. If you can rate your transaction, do so. 2y

And I was trying to read down my library stack, too. Ugh 😑

I remember receiving the first book in this series in a quarterly box from @bookriot and I'd never heard of DJO before. When I picked it up months later to read, I was totally hooked. Plus, Reza is such a badass character. My print copies are in storage so here are my digital ones.

TsundokuAleax I have them on my shelves and just keep trying to get through the box of books that will be leaving once read. He is hilarious in person. I got to see him at a panel and fell in love with all the authors there. 6y

This was a quick, fun read. I love how Older's book is set in the real world and enriched with the paranormal, just as Shadowshaper was. When I read this, I could feel and hear NYC. I know I'm not going to wait too long before I pick up the next book. I want to find out more about Carlos and hang out with Riley and Mama Esther too. #LRC21 #ontbrover1year #readinmarch

I enjoyed the descriptions of Brooklyn although it took me awhile to get into the book's plot. It seemed like there was more world-building than plot/story in this one, but it's definitely refreshing to have diverse voices in the genre. I'd like to see more development of minor characters. Looks like the next book may do so.

Parts of this were interesting, and I liked the voice of several of the characters. It's an interesting premise: an undead detective/hunter of rogue supernatural beings gets caught up in a plot to merge the living and the dead. The main character, Carlos, must decide what side he stands on. However, in the end, I just didn't care enough about the outcome. I'm not sure if it was just me, or if I wasn't in the right mood...but I just didn't love it.

I think the #BestSidekick goes to Riley. He's Carlos' (pictured above) partner in keeping the ghosts/spirits of NYC in check. He's a ghost ("all soul" as Carlos puts it), a bit of a horn dog at times and absolutely someone you'd want to back you up when shit goes down (especially against those nasty little ngks).

Hard boiled, morbidly funny, and pretty damn thrilling. A vibrant portrait of a diverse Brooklyn and its many mystical inhabitants. A book that is part detective story, part urban fantasy. It imagines an alternate, mythic realm of NYC, a place of phantasms, rituals, and rich cultural traditions. #fantasyorscifi
