Name of the Star
Name of the Star | Maureen Johnson
New York Times bestseller Maureen Johnson takes on Jack the Ripper in this captivating paranormal thriller! The day that Louisiana teenager Rory Deveaux arrives in London to start a new life at boarding school is also the day a series of brutal murders breaks out over the city, killings mimicking the horrific Jack the Ripper spree of more than a century ago. Soon "Rippermania" takes hold of modern-day London, and the police are left with few leads and no witnesses. Except one. Rory spotted the man police believe to be the prime suspect. But she is the only one who saw him--the only one who can see him. And now Rory has become his next target. In this edge-of-your-seat thriller, full of suspense, humor, and romance, Rory will learn the truth about the secret ghost police of London and discover her own shocking abilities.

LibrarianRyan This was such an interesting book. I was a bit sad they changed the cover for books 2 and 3 4y
DarkMina @LibrarianRyan Did you like the series? 4y
LibrarianRyan @DarkMina I liked book 1. But I didn‘t like it enough to finish the series. If I remember it seemed predictable at the half way point and towards the end had my eyes rolling. 4y

Finished this one on my walk today and enjoyed it more than I expected. I figured out the supernatural piece before Rory did but I enjoyed the other plot twists. I may have to look for the others on the series. So grateful for the #syncya program for audiobooks to listen to while waiting for my Libby holds.

This book was great! Sure there were nights it made me fear the dark a bit (I am very easily scared), but it was exciting and kept pulling me in to know what happens next. Apparently it‘s part of a series so I have a few more books to read now! I recommend this one, especially if you‘ve ever had any interest in Jack the Ripper.

Book 7 in O.W.L.s readathon prompt was Astronomy=read a book with the word Star in the title. I went blind to this book. I thought it would be a regular thriller but it is not. Something happened that will turn the story to a supernatural one. It was from so-so to ok. But it was entertaining. It is a YA which means that the humor & actions can be cheesy and silly, unbelievable, like ghostbuster. But I have the 3 books so I'll read them🙄2.95/3⭐️

I almost DNF'd this book at 40 pages because the writing style seemed very juvenile to me (like someone who was no longer a teen trying too hard to write like one), but I pushed through, hoping it would get better (it didn't). There's also a completely unnecessary "romance" that just consisted of him spouting Ripper facts and them making out. I do own the other 2 books, so I'll give the second one a chance, but I don't have very high hopes.

In the Tim Burton version the #MarchHare is a lot crazy in a villainous or dark way. It‘s almost scary but still intriguing. That is the same way Rory Deveraux sees the person only she can see in places grizzly murders have been taking place.

Day 2: Female author #agameoffavorites
My favorite female author is the fun, fierce, absolutely quirky, Maureen Johnson. She is so fantastic. I have not read all of her books, but of what I have read, my favorite is The Name of the Star. She has said that she treasured The Westing Game when she was younger.

As a fan of anything having to do with Jack the Ripper, I loved this book. In it, a girl from Louisiana goes to a London school and then someone starts recreating the murders from 1888. She begins seeing a man no one else remembers seeing but who is he, and is he the new Ripper, and why does he seem so focused on her? It was a good YA read recommended by @anewton91

I liked this book just not enough to finish the series. It is paranormal. And it follows a grisly murder in modern London.

For the most part this book is grade 6+ but for conservative parents I might bump that to 8+

#yawednesday @TheFunkyBookworm

tonyahoswalt I enjoyed this series. I think there is still more to come, one more book? 6y
LibrarianRyan @tonyahoswalt really. I thought it was just a trilogy. 6y
tonyahoswalt @LibrarianRyan the third book didn't wrap up the series, a Maureen Johnson has said there is 4th book coming, but it was delayed with her illness and then release of the Truly Devious books. No title or pub date known yet. 6y

Almost done. Slow to start. The story and action didn't start until nearly page 100. Too much description just to fill pages that has nothing to do with the plot. The characters and setting are interesting. The writing is mediocre. I probably will not read #2.

Before my Great Grandma passed a couple months ago, she told my Grandma that she wanted Tony and I to inherit her bedroom set. It originally belonged to her mother-in-law who bought it in the '20s. The Great One knew we had been shopping around for our guest room and I think she wanted it to go to me rather than one of my many aunts who never had time for her until they needed money... I at least made time with her, took Lane to visit every week

Johanna414 And made sure she always had a contemporary #romantsy on audio. So even though some of the relatives aren't very happy about it, I am so grateful to have this set to remember my great grandma by. I still need to polish it up and put the mirrors back onto the dresser and vanity, but I couldn't resist making the bed and spending some time in here. The room smells like her house... 8y

So im not sure would you say I did a marathon read of this book or a personal readathon challenge. I started it around 11 this afternoon and finished about 10 minutes ago and that was in between doing laundry and other motherly duties. Yes this photo is in my basement I set up a little corner with two chairs to relax in while doing laundry. Ohh 4 stars definitely loved how I wasn't able to guess the what's next in the story.

Okay, my non-self promotion entry for #AllHallowsRead is The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson. This uses a slow build up to scary with an actual ghost for the antagonist. Having the story set in London gives me a soft spot for this book, but Maureen does a great job folding in her Jack the Ripper research without it getting info-dumpy. #TheNameoftheStar #MaureenJohnson #ghost #ghoststory #ScaryRead #ShadesOfLondon #YALit #youngadult

Someone is murdering people in modern-day London like Jack the Ripper once did and Louisiana teenager Rory is an eyewitness to something strange and ghostlike that makes her become a part of the mysterious crimes. This fantasy/mystery novel is book one of a series that will keep you glued to the pages and make your heart pound just a little in fear (or if you are a fraidy cat with a big imagination like me, make your heart pound a lot in fear!).
