The Real Jane Austen
The Real Jane Austen: A Life in Small Things | Paula Byrne
26 posts | 6 read | 3 reading | 63 to read
In The Real Jane Austen, acclaimed literary biographer Paula Byrne provides the most intimate and revealing portrait yet of a beloved but complex novelist. Just as letters and tokens in Jane Austens novels often signal key turning points in the narrative, Byrne explores the small things a scrap of paper, a gold chain, an ivory miniature that held significance in Austens personal and creative life. Byrne transports us to different worlds, from the East Indies to revolutionary Paris, and to different events, from a high society scandal to a case of petty shoplifting. In this ground-breaking biography, Austen is set on a wider stage than ever before, revealing a well-traveled and politically aware writer important aspects of her artistic development that have long been overlooked. The Real Jane Austen is a fresh, compelling, and surprising biography of the author of some of our most enduring classic books from Pride and Prejudice to Sense and Sensibility, Emma to Persuasion and a vivid evocation of the world that shaped her.

Thank you so much, @4thhouseontheleft for this lovely #AVeryAustenHolidaySwap package! So much goodness, I don't even know where to begin. I'm so impressed that you made the ornament! It's really cool, as are the sweets, socks, and lip balm (minty!). And I'm very stoked about the books. I'll most definitely be participating in the #buddyread 🙂 I really hope your package arrives soon.

And the #JaneAustenSwap stalking begins! 🎉

Here are some of my books about Jane: nonfiction on the right and “fiction based on her work” on the left. I didn‘t bother including my copies of her novels. 😆

Thank you to @sprainedbrain and @mabell for this most awesome of swaps. 😘

wanderinglynn ❤️❤️❤️ I‘m so excited about the #JaneAustenSwap! I was shopping earlier for bookish Austen things 6y

3. My favorite Jane Austen relationship is Emma and Mr. Knightley. They are friends for many years and familiar with each other. They each had their quirks and appreciated those quirks in each other.

1. Jane Austen, and I would introduce her to fangirling, which I‘d be doing a lot of.
2. 1969, to see how good a hippie I would‘ve made.
3. Mila Kunis, but she‘d have to get some curls!
4. I tag @MallenNC and anyone else who wants to play!

#Money

A royalty cheque, made out to Miss Jane “Austin”, for the sum of Qb 18s 1d. It‘s signed by John Murray, her publisher (who was also the publisher of Lord Byron).

#150PnPCoverParty

Leniverse Couldn't even get her name right... 6y
Moray_Reads I don't want to brag, Leah, but I'm pretty sure we have the original of this cheque at work, along with several others. The John Murray Archive is one of the most significant parts of our collections 😜 6y

LeahBergen @Moray_Reads I saw that when I checked the photo credits (you braggart). 😂😂 6y
CrowCAH That is such a cool picture to have in a book!!! I‘ll have to remember to take a pic of my first royalty check. 6y
Moray_Reads @LeahBergen I can't help it. Working with Special Collections can make you a bit inured to rare and significant volumes. Some things are always impressive though 😆 6y

DeborahSmall @Moray_Reads your job sounds amazing!!! 💕 6y
DeborahSmall I thought the prompt for the 1st was ‘estates‘ so who fucked up? 6y
LeahBergen @DeborahSmall That would be @CrowCAH 😂 No, she actually just reversed the order of the first two days and I had screenshot and posted the older graphic. 6y
LeahBergen @Moray_Reads You really do have the most amazing job. I always love when you share photos from the collections! 😍 (edited) 6y

CrowCAH @DeborahSmall sorry, my mistake. I changed the order so the opening line could open up the month. 6y

On the anniversary of Jane Austen's death: these are from a trip I took a few years ago because I'm that crazy fan you've heard about. I visited her house in Chawton, Bath for part of the Jane Austen Festival and then the place where Jane died (Top pic. Close-up of the plaque on the bottom left) and where she's buried (bottom right). It was a totally nerdy, bookish trip but I LOVED it 🤓

Highly recommended! Organizing the book around objects gives it a broader focus than most Austen biographies have, as it examines family members, locations, current events... I learned a lot; it's really worth reading!
