Chesapeake
Chesapeake | James A. Michener
In this classic novel, James A. Michener brings his grand epic tradition to bear on the four-hundred-year saga of Americas Eastern Shore, from its Native American roots to the modern age. In the early 1600s, young Edmund Steed is desperate to escape religious persecution in England. After joining Captain John Smith on a harrowing journey across the Atlantic, Steed makes a life for himself in the New World, establishing a remarkable dynasty that parallels the emergence of America. Through the extraordinary tale of one mans dream, Michener tells intertwining stories of family and national heritage, introducing us along the way to Quakers, pirates, planters, slaves, abolitionists, and notorious politicians, all making their way through American history in the common pursuit of freedom. Praise for Chesapeake Another of James Micheners great mines of narrative, character and lore. The Wall Street Journal [A] marvelous panorama of history seen in the lives of symbolic people of the ages . . . an emotionally and intellectually appealing book. The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Micheners most ambitious work of fiction in theme and scope. The Philadelphia Inquirer Magnificently written . . . one of those rare novels that are enthusiastically passed from friend to friend.Associated Press From the Paperback edition.

1. Little Town on the Prairie
2. I went through a Michener phase in high school and well into my twenties.
3. I‘d like to read Lord of the Rings again for the first time and without movie scenes in my head.

(1978) This was the bestselling book of 1978, not so much a novel as a series of interlinked stories set on the Chesapeake Bay, from the 15th to the 20th centuries. The nature writing is pretty good, but the characters are mostly unpleasant, with ideas about race that are doubtless historically accurate but also not something I want to spend 850 pages with. Which is a me thing, really: Michener accomplishes what he sets out to do.

Tove_Reads He really does, but for sure his books are in some way about dated for our times. I am reading The Covenant now, it‘s similar style, good, but too long 2y
swynn @Tove_Reads Ooh, I'll be reading The Covenant in September, since it's the bestseller of 1980. I'm a little apprehensive, since I know it's about South Africa and worry it'll be more of the same: pretty good writing, but way too much of characters it's too hard to like. 2y
Tove_Reads So you have lots of John Grisham books coming up. 2y
See All 6 Comments
swynn @Tove_Reads Yep, also Stephen King. 2y
Tove_Reads How was Centennial? Haven‘t read that one. 2y
swynn Long. But I liked it; I first read it 'way back in grade school when the tv miniseries aired, and loved it then. WhenI reread it for this project, I was surprised by how many scenes made a lasting impression on me. 2y

Pickpick

Focusing on 3 families, Michener illustrates history,1600-1970s, of the Chesapeake area.I loved the first 300 pages and then the life stories of his characters in each generation became a bit banal and repetitive.BUT M. is a fantastic storyteller, researcher. Slavery, shipbuilding, religion, geography are just some of the topics he focuses on.An accomplished writer of dialogues, settings-this is not the last Michener book I'm reading.

DrSabrinaMoldenReads I loved “The Covenant” by him. 3y
Anna40 @Joyfulmimi set in South Africa? Did it chronicle stories of different families and historical events? Sounds interesting! I want to read The Source next, but have some other books that I want to read first 3y

COMPLETED for #chunksterchallenge2020 ... 1,024 pages of historical fiction covering several hundred years in the lives of intertwined families in the Chesapeake Bay region of Maryland. This book was OK but it didn‘t wow me. I think I‘m a different reader now than when I read Michener in the ‘80s. Still, it felt good to check this off my chunkster list.

CarolynM Congratulations! I'm still dragging my heels. But I will get it done eventually. 5y
JenReadsAlot Nice job!! 5y
ljuliel Good job 👍🏼. I‘d probably be the same if trying to read a Michener book today. I liked the ones I read but it was quite a long time ago, and doubt I‘d have the patience to slog through his first 100 pages of rocks and earth and water to get to the actual story. At least you completed it. 5y
See All 8 Comments
Amiable @ljuliel That‘s kind of why I set my chunkster challenge goal every year at 100 pages per week. That‘s pretty easy to attain (for me) and if I‘m bored I can put it down after 10-15 pages and go to something else without feeling guilty. It really helps me to keep momentum going through slogs. 5y
ljuliel That makes sense . I guess it‘d be a good way to complete those huge ones. I‘m not good at reading 2 books at once , so that system wouldn‘t work well for me , but I‘m glad it helps you and others. 5y
Amiable @ljuliel I get it — I used to be a one-book-at-a-time reader. It sounds counterintuitive, but I had to learn to juggle multiple books in order to finish some of them! Because if I hit a rough patch I would put it aside —and then just not read at all. So reading 2-3 simultaneously helps me complete them —I read the one I‘m in the mood for at the moment. Weird, I know. I do make sure to vary the genres so I don‘t get confused. A fiction and a NF. 5y
ljuliel Nothing wrong with that. We all have our own systems that work best for us. I sometimes wish I could juggle multiple books, but I‘ve been a one track mind sort of person my whole life , so I probably won‘t change now. I guess I‘m on the Old Dog / New Trick Road. 5y

Chugging away at my #chunksterchallenge2020 —page 816 of 1,020. I think I can, I think I can ... 🚂

CarolynM You're doing so well. I haven't read any of mine this month. I will get back to it. I really will 😬 5y
Amiable @CarolynM I find that I manage to keep to a 100 page/week schedule a lot easier the years I am reading fiction as opposed to nonfiction. I don‘t worry as much if my mind starts to wander! 😀 5y

We‘ve completed the first month of the year! How are my #chunksterchallenge2020 folks doing? Are you making progress on your chunksters? Remember: every single page counts! WE CAN DO THIS!

I‘m at page 570 of 1,024 right now —just over 50% of the way through. 👍🏼

P.S. If you‘ve decided not to continue participating in the challenge and you don‘t want me to keep tagging you, let me know!

JenReadsAlot I'm on page 500 of GWTW and loving it! 5y
zezeki I'm doing pretty well, I'm just above 50%, I got really into it! 5y
Amiable @JenReadsAlot @zezeki You guys are killing it ! Fantastic job! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼 5y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘ve taken a short break but will be back at it soon! 5y
Sunraven I‘m on page 85, still in the introduction. 😅 But I don‘t feel too bad — I think it‘ll go faster once I get into the actual story, and it‘s not really about speed, it‘s about Reading the Thing! We can (all) dooo iiit! 😁 5y
Amiable @Sunraven Exactly—getting through it is the goal! 👍🏼 But wow—that‘s a long intro! 😳 (edited) 5y
BarkingMadRead 33% of the way through! 5y
CareBear I‘m on page 432 ... a little behind where I‘d like to be so hoping to focus on it more during February. 5y
Scochrane26 @Amiable I put a comment on the previous check-in that should go here. Anyway, I‘m going to start mine this week. 5y
Sunraven @Amiable It really is a long introduction, the kind that appears to be someone‘s academic paper smashed onto the front of the work it‘s actually written about. 😆 5y
Amiable @CareBear After a little over 4 weeks with an original goal of 100 pages per week, it seems like you are right on track! Good progress! 5y
Amiable @BarkingMadRun Fabulous! Keep on truckin'! 5y
CareBear @Amiable oh ok great. I was thinking 500. I have zero math skills. 5y
Amiable @Sunraven I give you a lot of credit -- I am often tempted to skip over those lengthy academic intros because I get too bored before I even get to the book! 5y
Amiable @CareBear LOL ... mine aren't great either, but I've figured out how to fudge them in order to suit the situation! ;) 5y
Sunraven @Amiable I‘m usually tempted, too! But somehow I never give in. If it‘s part of the book I feel compelled to read it ... 😫 5y
Raemorales Stared this week on pages 162 of GWTW. I am going to focus on it this week hoping to get a large portion of it done. 5y
Amiable @Raemorales You‘ve got a great start at it! 5y
CarolynM No progress to report. I haven't been in the mood to think. I've been on a romance jag instead. Going to try to get back on the horse this week🙂 5y
llwheeler Also no progress for me, but I'll get there! 5y
SamAnne Oh I may have to join this. I have some mega chunksters on my TBR! What page number qualifies? 5y
Amiable @SamAnne Everyone is reading something different, but I believe most are in the range of 850 to 1,400-ish? Or thereabouts? I started doing a Chunkster Challenge on my own about 7 years ago -- I pick a book that is at least 1,000 pages, start it on Jan. 1 and then read 100 pages per week until it's done. What are you thinking of reading? 5y
Amiable @SamAnne But honestly, it's more about us cheering each other on to get through some of the giant books that we've had on our lists but have avoided because of the size! 5y
SamAnne @Amiable Ninth Street Women about Lee Krasner and that cool group of women NY artists; Stamped from the Beginning by Ibram X. Kendo, and might tackle Donna Tartt‘s Goldfinch despite it‘s mixed reviews. Also may do Washington: A Life reading/audio. Hoping to read two! 5y
Amiable @SamAnne Welcome aboard! I loved “Washington: A Life,” for what it‘s worth — I thought it was better than “Alexander Hamilton.” 5y
Liz_M I finished the first volume, which was 324 panes and am a ways into the second! 5y
Amiable @Liz_M Great job! 👍🏼👍🏼 5y
Catsandbooks Just started the Goldfinch this week, so I'm a month behind. I'm about 20 pages in right now 5y
Amiable @Catsandbooks A good start! 👍🏼 5y
BarkingMadRead Nice! I‘m still at about 33% I‘ll be picking it back up next week after a trip to NOLA 5y
erzascarletbookgasm I‘m late to the party! This is my chosen chunkster, though at 614 pages only. I‘ve only read the Prologue this week 🙈. I‘ll post my updates time to time from now onwards. Thanks for the reminder. 😙 5y
Sunraven I finally made it out of the introduction yesterday! Wheee! 😆 At the 20% point of the first volume of the book. Going to start the actual body of the book today, so we‘ll see how that goes. (edited) 5y
Amiable @erzascarletbookgasm That‘s such a good book—enjoy! 5y
Amiable @Sunraven Hooray! 💃🏻🕺 5y
InBooksILive Is it too late to join in?? 5y
Amiable @InBooksILive Not at all! Anytime is a good time to tackle a chunkster! 🙂 5y
InBooksILive Awesome! Reading a chunky 825 page boy right now and got a few others I've been wanting to get thru! 5y

3.5 weeks into #chunksterchallenge2020 and I‘m running a bit ahead. 👍🏼 It helps when the chunkster is an e-book and I can carry it around with me. 😀 Those years that I pick a 1,000-page book in hardcover make me question my sanity. 😬🙄

ljuliel How are you liking it so far ? 5y
Yoricke_SouthAfrica I really enjoyed this book. Have you read any of his other books? My two favourite books of his are Hawaii and The Covenant. 5y
Amiable @Yoricke_SouthAfrica I believe I read at least one or two Michener books back in the '80s, but I can't remember which ones. I had a love affair with huge sweeping family saga chunksters back then, so I know I must have picked up some of his stuff. He's the master of the genre, after all! :) 5y
Amiable @ljuliel I'm sort of “meh“ about it. I enjoy it while I'm reading it, but I'm not in a huge hurry to pick it back up again when I put it down. You know? It's a fairly easy read, at least. I mean in terms of it not being a nonfiction book with facts that I feel I need to process and understand and remember. But it's great for this challenge because I can read 100 pages in a week with no problems while reading other books at the same time. (edited) 5y
ljuliel My favorite is Centennial . This was good too, but not as good. The further along you get in the story, it gets better because more characters are added , which makes it more interesting. Keep up the good work. You‘re doing great. 5y

Where are my Chunkster Challengers? Time to check in for #chunksterchallenge2020 !
(I know it‘s a few days short of two weeks – it‘s just easier for me to plan from weekend to weekend… )

Progress report: I am on page 235 of 1,024.
How are you guys doing?

BarkingMadRead I‘m terrible, I have read a bunch of books but haven‘t started my Chunkster yet. I will start this week! 5y
Amiable @BarkingMadRun The first page is always the hardest! Strangely enough. Just picking it up and opening the cover is 60% of the battle with these chunksters! (I just made up that percentage -- I have no idea. :) Although this one is a re-read for you, right? (edited) 5y
llwheeler Page 205! On track! 5y
See All 39 Comments
BarkingMadRead Lol yes it is a re-read. Funny, I‘m reading Joe Hill right now and using a SK bookmark so I am thisclose to starting 5y
Amiable @llwheeler Excellent! And how is “Dune“? My husband and son keep telling me to read it but I haven't had the motivation. Yet. 5y
JenReadsAlot Page 161 of GWTW so not too bad! Great book so far as well. 5y
llwheeler The writing is good. Like most long epics, there's a lot of set up at the start, which I often struggle with. Now I feel like I'm starting to settle into it though (which is a very usual reaction for me with epics, not a criticism of the book). 5y
Amiable @JenReadsAlot great job! That is an excellent book, I agree. 5y
Raemorales Haven‘t started it! Starting in Feb 5y
zezeki I'm also counting it from weekend til weekend. I'm currently at page 172/1053 of 5y
Amiable @zezeki Great progress! Two thumbs up, 5y
Sunraven I did a weird. 😆 I started reading a chunkster as soon as I signed up, and then I questioned my decision, stopped, and have been wondering if I should pick a different one. Apparently I have chunkster-commitment-phobia ... but I feel like I might be able to cure it by promising myself I‘ll read another one as soon as I finish the first one. Sheesh, me. 😅 5y
CareBear I‘m on page 213 of 1157. It‘s actually been a quick and easy read so far for a chunkster 5y
Chrys I‘m only on pg 11, but there was a 39 pg intro! 5y
Catsandbooks Haven't started yet 🤦🏼‍♀️ But hoping to this week!! 5y
Amiable @Sunraven Which one are you reading/questioning? 5y
Amiable @CareBear Good to know! I might have to put that one on my list for the future. 5y
Amiable @Chrys The intro totally counts! 👍🏼 5y
Sunraven I was considering The Water Margin, a book about Kuan Yin, and the Tale of Genji (though I‘ve since realized the first two are only 1000+ pages in the ebook editions and not in the print 😓, while the last is actually 1000+ pages)...

...but after my last comment, I ended up starting the four-volume Anthony Yu translation of The Journey to the West, which is apparently 1,880 pages total. So, there‘s that. 😆
5y
Amiable @Sunraven You don't have to pick something that is more than 1,000 pages! A few others have chosen to read chunksters that are approximately 850-ish pages. Your new pick would count as TWO chunksters. 😃 5y
Sunraven So I guess I‘m doing a #DoubleChunksterChallenge? 😂 The Water Margin is 848 pages in print, so that one is in range, but the Kuan Yin book is 688. What‘s the minimum page count for chunksterism, do you think? 🤔 5y
CarolynM I'm not trying to do the full 100 pages a week. I read about 30 pages last night, if I get through a similar amount today I'll be happy with my progress. 5y
Scochrane26 I‘m going to start my chunkster in February since I‘m reading A Tree Grows in Brooklyn as an extra book this month. 5y
Amiable @Sunraven Well, I‘ve set my own personal chunkster challenge every year for the past 7 years. I try to find a book that is close to 1,000 pages. The minimum page count was 900 pages. The most so far has been about 1,500, I think. But that‘s my definition of a chunkster. The goal of this challenge was to encourage others to tackle their own personal chunksters and cheer everyone on to their own finish. 🙂 5y
Amiable @CarolynM 👍🏼👍🏼 5y
Amiable @Scochrane26 How are you liking “Tree”? 5y
Scochrane26 @Amiable I really liked the 2nd section we read. I think I‘ll really enjoy the book. One of the few classics I like. 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Err, this Chunkster Challenger here have not begun! 😬 Will update when I get there. 5y
Sunraven @erzascarletbookgasm I would feel pretty weird if I didn‘t read all the Chinese classics before I die, really. 😁 5y
erzascarletbookgasm @Sunraven I just realised you started in The Journey To The West instead. 🙂 5y
Sunraven And @Amiable, I‘m not really sure where the lower boundary of my personal definition of chunkster is ... but 1,880 pages is in the safe zone, so I guess it‘s a moot point. 😉 5y
Sunraven @erzascarletbookgasm Actually, I also restarted The Water Margin today (I got part of the way through it a couple of years ago but I don‘t remember enough of it), so I may just keep on going with that, as well. (edited) 5y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I‘m 120 pages in and completely captivated by being back in Middle Earth. I shouldn‘t have left for so long. 5y
Mollyanna I‘m still making my way through the short bio, literary impact and introduction (and all the other pre-page 1 stuff). I‘m hoping to finally start reading the actual book this week 🤔 5y
Amiable @Mollyanna All of that still counts! Good work! 👍🏼 5y
Scochrane26 @Amiable I‘m going to start my chunkster (An Echo in the Bone) this week. I realized today that since it‘s on my docs—friends sent it to me when I first got my kindle—it doesn‘t have page numbers, so I‘m going to try splitting it up by percent or chapters. 5y
Amiable @Scochrane26 When I log my page count into Goodreads it calculates it in percentage, too. That‘s a perfectly fine way to track progress. 👍🏼 5y
Raemorales Finally started Gone with the Wind this week so as of now I have gotten to page 162. My husband is going out of town for work this week so hoping to make a really good dent in it. 5y

First 100-page goal completed for #ChunksterChallenge2020

Crazeedi Iremember reading this one I loved Michener So much for Several Years ! 5y
ljuliel Good job 👍🏼 5y
Amiable @Crazeedi I feel like I read Michener years ago when I was younger (college-aged/in my 20s) but I can't really remember what I read. So I'm using this as both a chunkster challenge and to check off Maryland in the #ReadtheUSA2020 challenge -- two birds, one book! :) (edited) 5y
See All 6 Comments
Amiable @ljuliel Thanks ... I feel a bit guilty, though, because this is a fairly lighter kind of historical fiction and @CarolynM is tackling a giant nonfiction work about the 1930s! I think reading nonfiction in large chunks like this is infinitely more difficult in terms of trying to stay focused and motivated. Last year I read “Truman“ and it took me every bit of three full months to get through those 1,100 pages. 5y
ljuliel Well, reading is reading. I wouldn‘t call Michener exactly a light read. His books are pretty challenging for the first hundred or so pages when you learn about the dirt , rocks, plants, trees, etc. It takes awhile to get to the good part of the story but it‘s worth it. I have Truman in audio and not sure when I‘ll screw up the nerve to listen to 54 hours. 😱. Keep up the good work. To me 1000 pages is a challenge , no matter what you read. 😊 5y
CarolynM Like @ljuliel says reading is reading. Also, it's something I'm genuinely interested in, so it's not that much of a chore🙂. I'm not going to do the full 100 pages, but look for suitable breaks around that mark. The first part was 82 pages. 5y

OK, Chunkster Challengers, I'm about to dive in for #ChunksterChallenge2020 ! Page 1 of 1,024! Remember, if you are enjoying your book and want to keep going, please don't think you have to stop at 100 pages for the week! The goal is to get momentum going to keep us chugging through books that appear mountainous. Aiming for 100 pages per week is just a short-term goal that enables us to get through any slogs and reach the end zone! GOOD LUCK!

Amiable @thegirlwiththelibrarybag This is how the challenge works! We're aiming for 100 pages per week (or more!) until we are done! Easy. :) (edited) 5y

Every year I chose a book that is at least 1,000 pages and begin it on Jan. 1. The goal is 100 pages a week: easy, no pressure, and done by mid-March! I alternate fiction and nonfiction reads. As 2020 is a fiction year, I've selected the tagged book (1,024 pgs). Do you have a chunkster you've been wanting to tackle? Want some encouragement on your reading journey? Join me in the #ChunksterChallenge2020 and we will cheer each other on to the top!

Amiable Tag me when you've selected your book, and also at 100-page increments along the way. We can do it! 5y
Yossarian I just bought Ducks, Newbury, but it‘s only 988 pages — no paragraph breaks though! 5y
RvnclawWhovian Oohhh this sounds like fun! I‘ve def got a couple I could use for this haha 5y
See All 54 Comments
Amiable @Yossarian That's close enough to count! One year I picked “Middlemarch“ even though it was “only“ 904 pages because I needed the official incentive to finally get through it. I rationalized the page count because it was a paperback with tiny print! 😃 5y
Amiable @RvnclawWhovian Come along! I've been doing this for 10 years now -- it's how I managed to get through “War and Peace“ and “Les Miserables,“ to name just a few chunksters! 😬 Pacing myself at 100 pages per week also helps me to get through giant nonfiction reads -- this year I FINALLY read “Truman“ by David McCullough. It had been sitting in my stacks for years! 5y
Amiable @Yossarian I just looked up that book -- some editions are listed on GR at more than 1,000 pages! You're good! 👍 5y
Tamra @Amiable I recall really liking Middlemarch too, despite the length! 5y
JenReadsAlot Huh I might grab a book and join you! 5y
BarkingMadRead Ohhhhhh this sounds fun! I‘m sure I can find at least one! 5y
BarkingMadRead I‘ve been wanting to re read this and it‘s 1100+ pages! 5y
Amiable @Tamra I didn't hate it, but I didn't love it. I'm glad I finally read it, though. I actually enjoyed “War and Peace“ a lot more than I expected! 5y
Amiable @BarkingMadRun Join us on the trek up the mountain! I remember reading that one -- afterwards everyone asked me why I didn't just read the edited version. I was like, um, I don't understand the question! 😁 5y
Amiable @JenReadsAlot Yay! I'd love to have you on the climb! :) 5y
Emilymdxn That‘s a good idea! I‘ll be doing mine as an audiobook but will check in when I feel I‘ve done around a hundred pages lol. I have bad carpal tunnel syndrome and holding thick heavy books is very painful for me so thank the lord for audiobooks, it‘s my only way of doing chunksters! I‘m going to tackle Bleak House which I‘ve been promising myself I‘ll do ‘this year‘ for about five years! 5y
Amiable @Emilymdxn Check in when you are at 10% and increments thereafter! Do they mark increments in audiobooks? I have no idea—I‘ve actually never listened to one. 😬 And “Bleak House” was on my short list for 2020, too! 5y
Emilymdxn @amiable I‘ll do that! I can work out percentages from how far through I am I reckon! I started it ages ago but I trailed off near the beginning cause I lost motivation 5y
Catsandbooks Can I do the Goldfinch even though it's 964 pages? 5y
Amiable @Catsandbooks Sure thing! This is more about encouraging each other to tackle giant books than it is about a strict page count! 🙂 5y
Catsandbooks @Amiable awesome! Excited to join in! 5y
Mollyanna I love this idea! You‘ve inspired me, and I‘m finally going to tackle 5y
BarkingMadRead @Amiable I have read both and the uncut version is so much better! 5y
CarolynM Great idea! I'm in. I'm going to do 5y
CareBear I‘d like to join too! I have a few in mind, not sure yet. Thinking of 5y
zezeki This is really great idea! I think I might join with Middlemarch, I'bve been meaning to read it for ages. 5y
Karkar I did that with the Count of Monte Cristo. It was great to hold hold myself to the small group of pages. 5y
Amiable @CarolynM Ooh, excellent choice! That was almost my chunkster for 2019 but I went with “Truman” instead because I‘d had it on my shelves longer. I think “Grant” might be my pick for 2021 when I do nonfiction again. (edited) 5y
Amiable @CareBear I seriously considered that one! But I‘m trying to check off states in #ReadtheUSA2020 with @ljuliel and I already have Texas. So “Chesapeake” will check off Maryland for me, too. (edited) 5y
Amiable @zezeki We‘d be happy to have you! 5y
Amiable @Mollyanna Great! That was my book for 2016! 5y
Amiable @Karkar It DOES help, doesn‘t it ? I mean, if I‘m really into it I‘ll keep going past the 100 pages. But if it‘s a bit of a slog or I‘m not totally into it, it‘s not hard to make myself hit 100 pages in a week. Slow and steady gets you there! And also? I loved “The Count of Monte Cristo”! 🙂 (edited) 5y
CarolynM Maybe I should choose a different one for this year and do Grant with you next year. What do you think? 5y
Amiable @CarolynM Oh, that would be awesome! If you are okay with waiting, though? I don‘t want to sway you if you were looking forward to it! It‘s only that I just finished “Hamilton” about 6 weeks ago and I need a little break from Chernow before I tackle another one. 😬 (edited) 5y
erzascarletbookgasm Love the idea! I do have a few chunksters but I‘ll take a look at which one I think I‘m up for. 😊 5y
Raemorales I‘m planning on doing this with Gone with the Wind this year! This is a great idea! 5y
CarolynM I'm not in a hurry for Grant, I think it's the longest book on my TBR which is why it was the first one to come to mind. It would be great to have company with it so I'll put it off until next year and find something else for this🙂 5y
Amiable @Raemorales Another good one! 👍🏼 5y
Amiable @erzascarletbookgasm Yay! Glad to have you on our trek team. 🙂 5y
Amiable @CarolynM Wonderful! It‘s a reading date —Jan. 1, 2021! 😀 5y
CarolynM 👍 I'll put it in my diary 🙂 The book I've chosen for this year isn't quite as long, but I think it will still qualify as a chunkster 5y
Amiable @CarolynM 800+ pages definitely counts as a chunkster! 👍🏼 5y
JenReadsAlot I might join you guys for Grant next year! 5y
Amiable @JenReadsAlot @carolynM Hooray! We've already got a “Grant“ gang! 😀 5y
CarolynM @JenReadsAlot Excellent! The more the merrier, I say.👍🙂 5y
Liz_M I'm reading the tagged book for my goodreads group, but will cross-post it here! 5y
Amiable @Liz_M Excellent! Love to have you in the chunkster crew! 🙂 5y
Scochrane26 @Amiable I would like to join in, but I already have several books to read for January. I‘m doing A Tree Grows in Brooklyn buddy read, plus book club, etc. I‘ll see how this week goes, then maybe start. I want to read the 7th Outlander book. 5y
Amiable @Scochrane26 Oh, definitely make sure to immerse yourself in “A Tree Grows in Brooklyn“! If you've never read it, that's a priority for sure. I adore that book. 5y
Chrys This isone I was starting for this year and would love to join this challenge (edited) 5y
Amiable @Chrys Fabulous! Come on board! 👍🏼 5y
Sunraven I‘m a tad late, but I‘m going to join in once I pick which of the chunksters floating around my hoard is going to get read this year, whee! 💖 5y
Amiable @Sunraven Excellent! Happy to have you in the chunkster crew! 🙂 5y
Sunraven ☺️✨ 5y
Bklover Ok I‘m waaaaay late but I think I‘d like to join in too! Have to decide between The Priory of the Orange Tree and Wives and Daughters. 😉 5y
Amiable @Bklover Not too late —it‘s only Jan. 18! Welcome! 5y

1. Chesapeake, or really any Michener.
2. Bare feet always
3. Not sure of the actual elevation, above the tree line on the mountain outside Innsbruck.
4. Tie between liver and okra.
5. On Sunday, for our Days of the Dead service. Not really a costume, but a Halloween print tunic and a really cool witches hat.

This is Oxford, Maryland. A sleepy, small town where Michener outlined his book Chesapeake. Quiet and relaxing, but not sure if it has the same atmosphere during foggy fall or cold winter. The only book store in town is open Saturday to Monday (closes at 2pm).

walryan5 Very well said on your narrative of Chesapeake it was one of the best books I‘ve ever read. 5y

19. Autumnal

Planning a couple-days trip to Maryland next week. Photos are from my trip at this time last year (although technically Delaware and Virginia, rather than Maryland).

Read tagged book eons ago.

Amiable My youngest son lives in Maryland now--graduated from UMD College Park in May! I love it there. 6y
MaGoose @Amiable My mother and I usually visit the Eastern Shore of Maryland. Someday I'd like to visit central and western Maryland. Ends up my mom wants to go to Chincoteague, VA. So, we'll be cruising down the Eastern Shore, again... 6y
Amiable @MaGoose Annapolis is gorgeous, although I have a special fondness for Baltimore. Something about the city speaks to me. 6y
MaGoose @Amiable Thanks for the advice. I've been to Frederick once several years ago and want to go back, but my mom doesn't seem interested. I've always wanted to go to Annapolis. I've never given a thought about visiting B'more. I'll definitely think about it. 6y

A little historical fiction to add to the thriller mix that I‘ve been reading tons of lately. Very detailed with tons of beautiful imagery, it‘s just what I‘m in the mood for tonight 😊🤓📚

#17: A beautiful narrative of the Maryland region and the history of our nation. Michener does it again with rich characters, imagery, and a compelling narrative! A must read for a fan of early American history! #17booksin2017

heikemarie @dariazeoli I wish!! The world would be better for channeling some of the kindness and bravery tucked into those books though! 7y

Joining in today has me combing my shelves, adding to my #summerreadinglist. Here's an obviously well-loved copy of a book my mother often recommended, but one I just never got around to. Maybe this summer it's finally time?

LauraBrook Welcome to Litsy!!! 💐 (edited) 7y
britt_brooke Welcome! 7y
sara.the.librarian Great book! Proud to say I've lived my whole life in the 'Heart of the Chesapeake'. He writes extensively about my hometown, but only in such a way that you'd know it only if you were from here. 7y
Scurvygirl Welcome aboard! 7y
Lynnsoprano Welcome! It's been a long time since I read this, but it is my favorite Michener. Definitely worth the effort. 7y

GoneFishing
Chesapeake | James A. Michener

About this time the custom arose of referring to the Eastern Shore with capital letters, as if it were a special place; this tribute was never paid the western shore.
