2. I went through a Michener phase in high school and well into my twenties.
3. I‘d like to read Lord of the Rings again for the first time and without movie scenes in my head.

(1978) This was the bestselling book of 1978, not so much a novel as a series of interlinked stories set on the Chesapeake Bay, from the 15th to the 20th centuries. The nature writing is pretty good, but the characters are mostly unpleasant, with ideas about race that are doubtless historically accurate but also not something I want to spend 850 pages with. Which is a me thing, really: Michener accomplishes what he sets out to do.
St Michaels, MD. Michener wrote his book Chesapeake near St Michaels. On a stroll through the little town, we came across this free library ... ta-da.. books 💞
Focusing on 3 families, Michener illustrates history,1600-1970s, of the Chesapeake area.I loved the first 300 pages and then the life stories of his characters in each generation became a bit banal and repetitive.BUT M. is a fantastic storyteller, researcher. Slavery, shipbuilding, religion, geography are just some of the topics he focuses on.An accomplished writer of dialogues, settings-this is not the last Michener book I'm reading.
COMPLETED for #chunksterchallenge2020 ... 1,024 pages of historical fiction covering several hundred years in the lives of intertwined families in the Chesapeake Bay region of Maryland. This book was OK but it didn‘t wow me. I think I‘m a different reader now than when I read Michener in the ‘80s. Still, it felt good to check this off my chunkster list.
Chugging away at my #chunksterchallenge2020 —page 816 of 1,020. I think I can, I think I can ... 🚂
We‘ve completed the first month of the year! How are my #chunksterchallenge2020 folks doing? Are you making progress on your chunksters? Remember: every single page counts! WE CAN DO THIS!
I‘m at page 570 of 1,024 right now —just over 50% of the way through. 👍🏼
P.S. If you‘ve decided not to continue participating in the challenge and you don‘t want me to keep tagging you, let me know!
3.5 weeks into #chunksterchallenge2020 and I‘m running a bit ahead. 👍🏼 It helps when the chunkster is an e-book and I can carry it around with me. 😀 Those years that I pick a 1,000-page book in hardcover make me question my sanity. 😬🙄
Where are my Chunkster Challengers? Time to check in for #chunksterchallenge2020 !
(I know it‘s a few days short of two weeks – it‘s just easier for me to plan from weekend to weekend… )
Progress report: I am on page 235 of 1,024.
How are you guys doing?
First 100-page goal completed for #ChunksterChallenge2020
OK, Chunkster Challengers, I'm about to dive in for #ChunksterChallenge2020 ! Page 1 of 1,024! Remember, if you are enjoying your book and want to keep going, please don't think you have to stop at 100 pages for the week! The goal is to get momentum going to keep us chugging through books that appear mountainous. Aiming for 100 pages per week is just a short-term goal that enables us to get through any slogs and reach the end zone! GOOD LUCK!
Every year I chose a book that is at least 1,000 pages and begin it on Jan. 1. The goal is 100 pages a week: easy, no pressure, and done by mid-March! I alternate fiction and nonfiction reads. As 2020 is a fiction year, I've selected the tagged book (1,024 pgs). Do you have a chunkster you've been wanting to tackle? Want some encouragement on your reading journey? Join me in the #ChunksterChallenge2020 and we will cheer each other on to the top!
1. Chesapeake, or really any Michener.
2. Bare feet always
3. Not sure of the actual elevation, above the tree line on the mountain outside Innsbruck.
4. Tie between liver and okra.
5. On Sunday, for our Days of the Dead service. Not really a costume, but a Halloween print tunic and a really cool witches hat.

This is Oxford, Maryland. A sleepy, small town where Michener outlined his book Chesapeake. Quiet and relaxing, but not sure if it has the same atmosphere during foggy fall or cold winter. The only book store in town is open Saturday to Monday (closes at 2pm).
19. Autumnal
Planning a couple-days trip to Maryland next week. Photos are from my trip at this time last year (although technically Delaware and Virginia, rather than Maryland).
Read tagged book eons ago.

I couldn‘t put this book down. It was so addictive. Wonderful historical fiction. I wanna read everything he has written.

FAVORITE BOOK
A little historical fiction to add to the thriller mix that I‘ve been reading tons of lately. Very detailed with tons of beautiful imagery, it‘s just what I‘m in the mood for tonight 😊🤓📚
#17: A beautiful narrative of the Maryland region and the history of our nation. Michener does it again with rich characters, imagery, and a compelling narrative! A must read for a fan of early American history! #17booksin2017
Joining in today has me combing my shelves, adding to my #summerreadinglist. Here's an obviously well-loved copy of a book my mother often recommended, but one I just never got around to. Maybe this summer it's finally time?
Again with the WOW! My second Michener and just as good as Poland. Not sure if better than is a possibility. Am definitely going to read more Michener in the future.
It's too rainy and blah to go #outside today, so this is from a walk in a state park on the western shore of the Chesapeake a couple months ago. #riotgrams
Absolutely love swapping book recommendations with customers as they come through! This one she raved about. Anyone else read it?

About this time the custom arose of referring to the Eastern Shore with capital letters, as if it were a special place; this tribute was never paid the western shore.
