This may be my most controversial post.
I prayed to the book gods with the upmost of respect while making my Travel Les Mis book.
I don‘t want to get behind further, & just can‘t carry the full book on vacation.
This book was waiting in the wild to be used & loved.
With an X-Acto blade I cut the cover, several of the pages, & the appendix in the back. Now Les MIs can return to France, but in the beautiful countryside

Ruthiella At one point in my life I would have been horrified but now-do what you need to do. 😅 Just recycle ♻️ the pages if you can. (edited) 3w
tpixie @Ruthiella Yes! It was a very difficult decision. I felt like the boy who was taking advantage of the tree in The Giving Tree. I did give the book thanks. I‘ll keep the book & pages until I‘m done reading the book, and then I may do some sort of artwork craft in celebration. 💛📒💛 3w

All the discussion of slang in today's chapter reminded me of this article from 2019. It's not necessarily related to the book, but I found it interesting. My brain goes down weird rabbit holes sometimes. 🙃

TheBookHippie I‘m a rabbit hole queen! We were just talking about the French language at school with the teachers. 1mo
Cuilin Interesting. (It reminded me of Cockney rhyming slang.) I love disappearing down a rabbit hole and starting a new fixation. 🤦‍♀️ 1mo
lil1inblue @cuilin @thebookhippie I'm fascinated by the evolution and blending of languages, so anything that even borders on that will send me down the rabbit hole. 🙃 Slang origins can be particularly intriguing. 🤓 1mo

Interesting- in the same day I came upon the same French phrase!
“Entre chien et loup “ - literally between dog and wolf- it means evening.
I‘m reading the Languedoc Trilogy in advance to my trip to SE France ?? (Toulouse, Figeac, & Béduer) since the books are based in that area & Carcassonne.
This phrase is in Book 2- Sepulchre
I‘m lucky to travel, but these travels will make me even further behind on #ReadLesMis

tpixie I insist on reading the book itself & cannot imagine lugging this heavy book on the plane. Dare I buy a second book, tear out some pages, and take with me? Then copy over my notes? 😂 I guess I could actually do that with my ebook, just not as easily… 1mo
Cuilin 2009 I got to see the fireworks on Bastille day over the castle in Carcassone. It is a beautiful fully walled city. I hope you get to see it!! oh, I like the idea of using a secondhand book!! 1mo

Lcsmcat There‘s a novel by that name, by Irene Némirovsky , but I don‘t know if it‘s been translated into English. It‘s not in the Litsy data base. 1mo
charl08 I've scanned pages from a travel guide before when I was only going to one area (and the book was a brick). Not sure if reading a photocopy would be worse than an e book though? 1mo

Lcsmcat @tpixie Yes! That was my introduction to her. I then read everything I could find. My old library had a huge foreign language section so even works that hadn‘t yet been translated were available to me. 1mo

3✨ This is a chunkster of a book that goes over a lot. We have a few main characters throughout as one little girl grows up. Did I follow along the whole time? No. I was interested in the people and how they grew, but there was quite a bit of battles that just didn‘t interest me.

tpixie @lil1inblue @TheBookHippie @dabbe so far Book Seven is confusing me. Or I‘m not getting the reason of this tangent yet. I do know Hugo loves to go on tangents… 1mo
TheBookHippie @tpixie he loves a good long nothing to do with what we‘re reading tangent …that four chapters later you go OHHHHHH. I do know the second time through I‘m catching a ton more. 1mo
dabbe @tpixie Boy you got that right! And if I'm remembering right, Book Seven repeated itself on certain pages (book printing error?), so I kept wandering and getting confused. I finally read some summaries of just that book and MOVED ON. 🧡💜💛 1mo

tpixie @TheBookHippie 💜💜💜 1mo
lil1inblue @tpixie @thebookhippie @dabbe I personally found this book fascinating. It felt like he was explaining the tone of the time, and setting things up for later events. It's like he took a minute to let us know that this is also brewing. I also found it quite relevant to the US right now. 1mo

Inaugurated
in 1892, paying homage to
Ocean Man — Victor.

Fun fact: “Ocean man" was a self-applied nickname Victor Hugo used to describe the male literary geniuses he admired, comparing their minds to the vastness of the ocean. The sea and natural world were a significant source of inspiration for his writing and artwork, particularly during his exile in the Channel Islands.

Pickpick

It was a struggle at times finishing this. The main story and characters were exceptional and kept me going, but the lengthy philosophical tangents Hugo so often took made me at times almost forget what the story was about. 19 pages on “slang“. 15 pages on the “sewers of Paris“. And so many more. Still, the story makes it a worthwhile read. The ending is worth waiting for.

BookNook Hugo would have done well to listen to his own critique from page 1175: “The philosophers talk stuff and nonsense. I should like to stuff their philosophy down their gullets again.“ (edited) 3mo

Pg 409
The “Collège des Quatre-Nations” (College of Four Nations) in Paris was established in 1661 by Cardinal Mazarin in his will. It was created to educate students from four territories that had recently come under French control through the Treaty of Westphalia (1648) and the Treaty of the Pyrenees (1659).
#READLESMIS

tpixie The four “nations” represented were:
1.Alsace
2.Roussillon
3.Artois
4.Pignerol (Pinerolo) – a town in Piedmont, now in Italy

These regions were incorporated into France during the mid-17th century, and the college was intended to integrate elites from these new provinces into French culture and administration.

I‘m behind on my reading (April 13) since I‘ve been traveling on the weekends, so maybe I can get a little reading in at work! I‘m so thankful that Cossette is with Jean Valjean! 🇫🇷💙🤍❤️ 🇫🇷
