Money, Money, Money: A Novel of the 87th Precinct | Ed McBain
10 posts | 2 read | 1 to read
It is Christmas in the city, but it isn't the giving season. A retired Gulf War pilot, a careless second-story man, a pair of angry Mexicans, and an equally shady pair of Secret Service agents are in town after a large stash of money, and no one is interested in sharing. The detectives at the 87th are already busy for the holidays. Steve Carella and Fat Ollie Weeks catch the squeal when the lions in the city zoo get an unauthorized feeding of a young woman's body. And then there's a trash can stuffed with a book salesman carrying a P-38 Walther and a wad of big bills. The bad bills and the dead book salesman lead to the offices of a respected publisher, Wadsworth and Dodds. This is good news for Fat Ollie, because he's working on a police novel -- one written by a real cop -- and he's sure it's going to be a bestseller.

This one felt like a bit more of a romp than some of the earlier books. The pacing was good and there were a lot of funny lines. As always, I enjoy the character development of the various detectives as well.

So if any of you happen to have an extra $75,000 that you don‘t need, burning a hole in your pocket, you can stay for one night at this hotel suite in Manhattan which features this really cool library! 💁🏻‍♀️

InBooksILive Only $75,000? Psssh that's pocket change! 😂 6y
InBooksILive That place is beautiful though and that library is awesome! 6y
Amandajoy I feel at that price there‘s a serious lack of books. But the bookshelves are lovely! 6y
BookBabe @Amandajoy I like to think it‘s very carefully curated, and only truly exceptional books are on these shelves. 😄 @InBooksILive Right?! 😁🙌🏻 6y

So while my kiddos were taking a particularly difficult test on The Canterbury Tales, I decided to calculate how much I‘ve spent on books in the past year. 😳😮😳😮 Devil thy name is Barnes & Noble! ThriftBooks is my kryptonite!

Tamra I don‘t even want to know.....thank the gods for used books! 7y
DrexEdit That's a very courageous thing to do! 😊 7y
Bklover I don‘t think I‘d want to know! 7y

BekahB HA!! Yep, book buying truths are hard to face. At the end of last year I entered all of my unread (physical) books into a spreadsheet and they totaled to 696. I triple-checked because I just couldn‘t believe it - but the number was correct. I‘m sure the amount of money I spend each year on books is super high too. 😬 7y
mklong I use the Mint app and it tallies it up for me. It‘s embarrassing! It even sends me alerts that say things like “you‘ve exceeded your budget for books.” Like I don‘t know that! 7y
Mariposa_Bookworm @BekahB I keep telling myself since a lot of it is YA lit that I‘ll donate it to my classroom. Lies. I just love books. 7y
Mariposa_Bookworm @mklong I need to try that. My bank app only separates the transactions. It doesn‘t send me an alert. 7y
mklong @Mariposa_Bookworm Give it a go, it really is a great tool. Even if I cheat and just raise my planned budget when I go over it! 7y
rubyslippersreads I want that calculator! 😻 7y
debthmpsn That darn ThriftBooks site gets me every single time! Well, then and Amazon. I‘m too scared to look 🙀 7y
Mariposa_Bookworm @rubyslippersreads I love Hello Kitty!!! 7y
Reggie 😂 7y
Sace I try not to think about it. 7y
Mariposa_Bookworm @RestlessFickleBookHoarder It certainly hasn‘t stopped me from getting books. My mom even bought me books on my last visit home. ☺️ 7y
Sace @Mariposa_Bookworm oh it sure doesn't stop me either! 😂 7y

I was supposed to be on a book buying ban...somehow I ordered all of these! Oops! Zero self control! Ironically I don't even have any time right now to read them!

ju.ca.no sounds familiar🙈🙈 7y

Does anyone else's family give them a hard time about how much they spend on books? Fortunately I don't have an unsupportive SO, but my parents give me a hard time about spending roughly $100 on books every month. I want to be all "You spend $215 on cable every month. You have no room to talk!" I am a grown woman with a good job, so let me have my books! ???

8little_paws I simply don't tell people how much I spend on books 😁 8y
Joanne1 They need to mind their own bees wax (as my kids would say). I generally find that anyone who is shocked by my spend have their own indulgences (going out, buying music, alcohol, golfing whatever). 8y
LitLogophile My dad has always made it clear that basically any money I spent on books was a waste since I could get them from the library, share w/ my friends, etc. I guess I've also never really explained that I just love them ! 🤔 8y

magictoyshop @8little_paws that's my strategy too! 😂 8y
tracyrowanreads My parents never said no to book money. Didn't matter what I wanted, the answer was always yes, even when we couldn't afford other stuff. #blessed 8y
EvieBee I find that people are critical if they themselves aren't readers! I think even if you spent $10 monthly, it would be too much. My family was either concerned about the money or lack of space, lol! They eventually tired of making an issue about it and jumped on board (granted after 20 years). 8y
Bklover You spend whatever you want!! One cannot have enough books!!! 📚 📚 📚 📚 8y
Paperback.Propensity Ah, it's your own business how you spend your money. I never had that problem as my mother is a reader, but I have gotten some criticism from non readers on how much I read. I don't really understand that; I don't judge on how often people play video games or whatever they like to do often. We all have our hobbies and preferred methods of entertainment. 8y
Bookworm-Bobbie No one knows how much I spend on books. But I think that's because I'm too afraid to keep track myself 😆 8y
TrishB @8little_paws @magictoyshop me too 😂 though tbh they are all that used to it in my immediate family that no one bothers! It's the in laws that comment....as if I'm starving the kids! 8y
kmcallion You could try becoming a reviewer. That way you get books for free. I'm part of a review group on facebook and authors are happy to send free copies 8y
Sace I'm like @Bookworm-Bobbie in that I don't track myself (too scared.) I don't think anyone should say anything about your spending habits except maybe (MAYBE) an SO. 8y
Eggs Everyone has preferences for how they use disposable income. It's just opinion as to how someone else perceives your expenditures (really no one's business but yours). Laugh it off 🤗 8y
Gina Ahhh well you can tell them our great first president felt books were the way to enlightenment so he collected them to the tune of 900 at the end of his life! Now who doesn't want to walk in George Washington's shoes. BTW this is a great book 8y
PeruvianBookWorm @Paperback.Propensity my mum is a book worm too! I remember when I was little I would go with her to bookstores everymonth and she would buy 6, 7, 8 books and let me choose whichever I wanted. I woulf never get a no if I wanted more books and today my mum asks me every other sunday if I bought a new book or what an I reading. I feel really lucky I was taught to enjoy reading at such an early age! I will do that too! 8y
Bookwitchery Books are good things! And when you buy books, you are a)supporting the economy and b) supporting the book industry, from authors to publishers to printers to booksellers. Those are all good things. 8y
Teafiend My problem is storage, Every room has stacks of books I have been trying to use the library these past two years exclusively. I now only buy books when I know I will reread them and want them in my permanent collection. There are worse habits to have than buying books! 8y
Megabooks @8little_paws sometimes it slips out! 🤐🤐🤐 8y
Megabooks @Joanne1 Yes! Books are my thing. Let me have my thing!! 8y
Megabooks @lostlogophile I love having them too. There's something to a nice bookshelf. 😃😃 8y
Megabooks @magictoyshop 👍🏻👍🏻😎 8y
Megabooks @tracyrowanreads It was that way as a kid. Idk why it changed. You are blessed! (edited) 8y
Megabooks @EvieBee84 maybe soon then?!? 👍🏻👍🏻 8y
Megabooks @Paperback.Propensity my mom's a reader, but mainly library and free kindle books. She doesn't understand why it's important for me to own some 8y
Megabooks @Bookworm-Bobbie 🤣🤣🤣 I just recently started!! 8y
Megabooks @TrishB 😒😒 I wish I could just make them understand I can freaking afford it!! 8y
Megabooks @kmcallion i used to review, but I never got on the free book train! 8y
Megabooks @Sace Definitely true! 8y
Megabooks @Eggs I'm just hoping they stop bringing it up! 8y
Megabooks @Gina Awesome! Thanks!! 8y
Megabooks @PeruvianAlle That is so nice!! 8y
Megabooks @Bookwitchery for sure!! Good perspective!! 8y
Megabooks @Amyg3 I have very few books now, so I'm adding. We'll see...I might be like you next year!! 8y
Paperback.Propensity Yeah some people don't get it. I like to be able to pick a book off a shelf that I already read, and read through my favorite parts. It's a great comfort. Sometimes I borrow from the library, and the book is so dear to me that I wish I had bought it. 8y
Megabooks @Paperback.Propensity Comfort is exactly it!! There are some books I've read 6-7 times. I often own them as paper, e, and audio! 8y
Eggs I'm that way too. Some I've read or referred back to so many times, they fell apart and had to be replaced 😬 8y
Megabooks @Eggs well loved ❤️❤️ 8y
MyNamesParadise I'm 25, work part time and live with my mom. My parents still support me a lot. They know theres no stopping me when it comes to books. They know I get a lot from the library. They know it could be worse. I could be a drug addict so they're grateful it's just books I'm addicted to! 🙂 8y

Ugh. Stressing hard over money. Where does it all go? Just want my bills to be caught up so I can chill out. I've got a good number of Pampered Chef shows booked this month (thank you, Facrbook parties) so hopefully a lovely commission check will await me next month. Send me some bookish good vibes, Littens. 😲🤓🤑😫

CaroPi I am scared at the idea of knowing how much money I spend on books per year.... My only consolation is to tell myself..."Is not bad...you can be a drug addict.... An alcoholic or a serial killer... But you are not...." ? 8y
