If what you feel like is a Sapphic vampire love story in verse, oh boy are you in luck.

Lone Women: A Novel | Victor LaValle

Mehso-so

Not sure about this book. Adelaide leaves for Montana to become a so called Lone Woman, a woman tending her own land. Life in Montana in 1915 is harsh and desolate.
An interesting setting and group of characters but an additional ghost didn‘t work for me. Not sure what it added to a story that would have been good enough without it. #CampToB

Ruthiella I didn‘t get on with his previous book, The Changeling. But I do want to try him again. OTOH, horror isn‘t a genre I am drawn to. 1y
BarbaraBB @Ruthiella I felt the same about The Changeling and again about this one. O want to like him but we‘re not a good match. 1y

BarbaraBB I forgot to @Cinfhen and @BarbaraTheBibliophage because I will use the book for the #Booked23 prompt #AboutAMonster! 1y
Cinfhen Great choice for prompt! This was ok for me too. I can‘t even remember a ghost 🤦🏼‍♀️Just the “monster” 1y
sarahbarnes I gave this a low pick, and agree with your review. Interesting but not quite my jam. 1y

Skating in just under the wire with my #AAM selection. What a fabulous read! Thank you so much to all the Littens who recommended it! I bought a physical copy of it around the time it was first published, but had no patience for nonfiction back then & didn‘t make it very far into the story. I‘ve always meant to go back to it, & I‘m so glad I finally did! This was informative & exciting, it won‘t be my last Eric Larson. #Booked2023 #AboutAMonster

Cinfhen Excellent choice - loved this Larson ❣️ 1y
Suet624 Larson‘s books are all 🔥🔥 1y
lynneamch Of the many Larson's I've read, this one is the best, by far. 1y

Cinfhen I haven‘t read her before…what else do u recommend ??? 1y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen I've read 2 others by her - A is for Arsenic (about Agatha Christie and the poisons she uses in her novels) and Death by Shakespeare (about his methods of killing his characters). There's also books about vampires, James Bond, scientific molecules and elements, but I haven't read them yet! 1y
jenniferw88 @Cinfhen the James Bond and Molecule ones aren't available in paperback yet. 1y

A Jewish town in Poland becomes endangered when a British plane crashes nearby. As Nazis swarm, Noah and his grandfather create a Golem for protection. I'm using this for #Booked2023 #AboutAMonster for now. I'm interested in finding other golem stories. @Cinfhen @BarbaraTheBibliophage @alisiakae

Cinfhen I love golem stories!! The BEST BEST one ever is 2y
Cinfhen Also alice Hoffman wrote a golem story - not as good as I was hoping for but decent 2y
CaitZ @Cinfhen Thank you for the recommendations. I read Golem and the Djinn, that's the one that got me interested, but not the other two. I've added them to my ever-growing TBR pile 2y
Cinfhen LMK if you pick up the Hoffman book or the sequel to Golem 🤓 2y

River Marked | Patricia Briggs

Mercy and her crew struggle to control the uncontrollable—a river monster! I‘m #latetotheparty with this series. Plus, I constantly put it down for extended periods. But that‘s only because I‘d like to stretch out my enjoyment.

My only concern is whether the author has a personal connection to the indigenous peoples and mythologies in her books. Or does she practice cultural appropriation?

It was great returning to Elfhame but I wish I had double checked my belief that this was a stand-alone because I am now left waiting for the sequel to come out so that I find out what happens next. Wren was such an interesting character, part fierce Fae, part traumatized girl. Cannot wait to see what her next moves are.

I loved this book all the way through until the ending, which nearly ruined the whole book for me. 😡

Sally first presents as a neurodiverse MC, which I felt was handled really sensitively (not like The Maid which felt like it was slightly poking fun). However, as the story unfolds, we learn how her past may have influenced her behaviour - nature vs nurture, maybe.

This was MUCH darker than I expected but also warm and funny. TW in spoiler.

A true crime graphic novel about the dogged detective who helped bring justice for the victims of the Green River Killer. Gary Ridgway was found guilty of murdering 49 women in the Seattle area in the 80s-90s. He‘s the second most prolific known serial killer in America. Though these crimes feature in the graphic novel, the focus is on the author‘s father, the detective in the case. On #hoopla—a good read during even MORE indoor soccer training.
