Civil starts her new job as a nurse in 1973 filled with desire to help people but soon realizes that her clinic is subjecting its poor Black patients to harmful procedures without consent. As she becomes involved in the lives of two of her young patients she is determined to put a stop to the cruel practices. The two timelines were unnecessary and treated so unevenly but thankfully did nothing to lessen impact.

Heffington writes an easily accessible look at tbt history of women who, for a variety of reasons, do not have children. She looks at society‘s view of women who follow this path and really dives into the reasons - whether it‘s reproductive rights or political or even climate related.

As a woman who does not have children, I found myself nodding along to the perceptions from society. This was so good, and it made me feel like I am not alone…

Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick You're not alone! I am also child-free by choice. A large part is that I know I have very little patience, even for my nieces. 11mo

Cinfhen This does sound fascinating and interesting! My daughter & SIL have stated many times they don‘t think they want children and while that makes me sad, I can respect their decision. 11mo
jenniferw88 Definitely NOT alone! Mine is due to health reasons - it's extremely unlikely I'll be able to have them as I don't produce enough of any hormone (I'm on a pill to control my stress hormone level, for example). 11mo
JuniperWilde As stated above - you are not alone. It‘s good to have books to jumpstart the conversation. ♥️ 11mo
Librarybelle I definitely make sure my fur babies get all of my love and treat them like my kids! 😂 @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @Cinfhen @jenniferw88 @JuniperWilde Things would be different if I had a significant other, but I don‘t, so c‘est la vie. Thanks for listening! 11mo
Meshell1313 Yes! Child free by choice! I‘ve read many similar books but added this one! Sounds great. If you‘re interested check out (edited) 11mo
Librarybelle @Meshell1313 Thanks for the recommendation! 11mo

Definitely a pick! This is a short, but important book. I thought the audio narration by the author was well done. #Booked2023 #AboutReproductiveRights

This book takes the conversation about repro rights and turns it on its head. That‘s a telling pun. Every abortion can be prevented by one thing—men acting responsibly. The author makes a book-length listicle (list+article). I enjoyed her audiobook narration and book content so much that I grabbed the ebook right after finishing a library audiobook.

I think the review from @Soubhiville said it best for me - I had this unsettling feeling almost the entire time I was reading this. It‘s good, for sure, but creepy, and thought provoking (which can lead to some scary thoughts!). Ultimately I enjoyed it, but just….holy s*** 😳😳😳 @Cinfhen would this work for #aboutreproductiverights? I‘ll leave my reasoning in a spoiler comment 😊
#booked2023

CBee I was thinking that Martine never had a choice about having a baby - her programming just set it all up and it was, basically, a forced pregnancy (though she does ultimately want the baby, and loves it, but is her programming telling her to?). Thoughts? 14mo
Soubhiville I think it works for that prompt. Also the clones are a form of reproduction, and they mostly get no choice about their lives at all! 14mo
CBee @Soubhiville right! So many thoughts about this one 😳🤔 14mo
Cinfhen Ohhh, interesting question! Yes, I do think it works and I totally love what @Soubhiville wrote!!! Go for it!! (edited) 14mo
CBee @Cinfhen awesome! Thanks 😊 14mo

What a fascinating if not very pleasant read. The description of Elena‘s illness were so well done and although both Elena and Rita were unlikeable characters, you really felt for them both - heartbreaking, really.

And then the wonder of why Elena was so desperate to make the difficult trip across town to find Isabel, changing the narrative entirely towards the end.

I‘m going for all of the prompts on this one ⬇️

I don‘t think there‘s much I can say about this book that hasn‘t already been said here. It‘s sort of wrung me out. These 3 women will be circulating in my brain for a while.
Hard hitting, realistic look at three women‘s lives. Not an easy read and I‘m glad it was only short.

What a magical ride? An urban fantasy 'Minority Report'. Parts are predictable, but in a good way. Left me hanging on a cliff edge. Now I'm dangling here until book 2 arrives.

Works for the following #Booked2023 prompts

#AnyPartOfATrilogy
#AboutReproductiveRights (I've used this)
#FeaturingANonbinaryOrTransCharacter
#FeaturingThreeGenerations

@BarbaraTheBibliophage @alisiakae @Cinfhen

Cinfhen Thanks for sharing ALL the options😘 1y
LeeRHarry I‘m dangling there with you 🤣 1y
julesG @LeeRHarry I knew it was a risk starting the trilogy early. 1y
Caroline2 Really looking forward to starting this one. 👍 1y
