The past week has been unbearably stressful with several deaths in the family/extended family, some political upheaval overseas that affects my family profoundly, a major holiday dawning and some health issues… so it‘s no surprise that I‘m projecting my mind into next month in all the little ways possible, hoping that another week will make the world seem lighter. #bookspin #doublespin @TheAromaofBooks

I could not get into this at all: while the subject matter of the lives of Palestinian women is relevant and meaningful, I found the writing style, as well as the audio narration, felt much more like it was intended for a young adult audience. I drifted away pretty quickly.

I loved the writing in this book more than I loved the book itself. Marra‘s writing is clever and his turns of phrase stuck in my mind. A broadly scoped story about WWII refugees/immigrants making their way in 1940s Hollywood, this book perhaps spread itself too thin with too many characters and stories, but, honestly, the vivid and hilarious descriptions of the main character‘s Italian great aunts is worth the price of admission. This is my first BS/DS doubleheader! This series received so much Litsy love that I‘d be amiss not to add it to my TBR. I finally prioritized these warm-hugs-in-book-form and read them back-to-back. They are both cute as a bug‘s ear, I liked both equally, and perfect when you yearn for a couple days of stress-free reading.

marleed @Cupcake12 oh same here. I was giddy with excitement when I realized I could use both my bookspin and my DoubleSpin categories to read both books! Btw, the second book is a prequel but both are stand alone plots so it doesn‘t really matter if book-recall fades in the time it gets from one book to the next. 3d

I am drawn to stories of messy family dynamics, especially a good sibling story, and this one fit the bill. The small town setting and a likable main character also made this a pick for me. This was my April #Bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

I'm pretty sure this #DoubleSpin has been the best #BookSpin book I've read so far. It started a little rough, and I wasn't sure where the story was going, but after a couple of chapters, it started making sense. I've enjoyed everything I've read by McLean, so I'm not all that surprised.
