Pickpick

This was a delight! It‘s been on my shelves for years, and a #blameitonLitsy trifecta prompted me to read it: I put it in my #192025 lineup for 1972, @TheAromaofBooks spotted it on my #BookSpin list & suggested a casual buddy read, then it landed as my August #BookSpin…clearly, it was meant to be!

Herriot‘s descriptions of the Yorkshire countryside make me long for England (admittedly, it doesn‘t take much to trigger that longing in me!). ⤵️

BarbaraJean (Cont‘d) His stories of life as a vet range from hilarious to charming, as do the personalities he introduces us to along the way. I loved every one of Herriot‘s anecdotes—from Siegfried‘s infuriating but somehow also charming contradictoriness, to Tricki Woo the beloved and overfed Pekingese, to Herriot‘s disastrous attempts to court Helen. I devoured the short chapters like the best treats, using the book as a reward to follow heavier reads. 2w
AmyG I read these as a young adult and absolutely loved them. 2w
SamAnne A favorite of mine from my early teenage years. 1w

Ruthiella I also read these as a teenager and remember loving them. The TV show was also on PBS at the time which was wonderful. 😍 1w
Sparklemn @Ruthiella There is a newer version on PBS that is wonderful as well. 1w
Librarybelle Great choice! 1w
Daisey I loved these as well! 1w
BarbaraJean @Ruthiella @Sparklemn My parents loved the original TV show... I've just put the newer version DVDs on hold at the library, to watch with my dad 😊 1w
TheAromaofBooks It was SO fun to revisit this one! I'm starting All Things Bright and Beautiful next week 😂 1w
BarbaraJean @TheAromaofBooks Yaaaay! It is SO tempting to start in on All Things Bright and Beautiful... but I'm trying my best to finish a couple of reading challenges and can't believe October is almost over 😩 I'm planning to start #192030 in the new year, and I might just have to put Bright & Beautiful and Wise & Wonderful down for 1974 and 1976 😁 1w

Deblovestoread Yay! This is one challenge i can commit to 😁 4w
AllDebooks I loved #192025 challenge. It's such a fun way to choose titles. I lost my way a bit over the last year. I'll move my planned reads onto the new challenge and start again. 😍 4w
dabbe Yay! Thanks for including me on this! 🩶🧡🤎 4w
RaeLovesToRead Me: I am doing enough reading challenges already. Also me: 👀 4w
mabell I‘m excited! Thank you! 4w
Gissy It sounds so good. I need a journal to write what I want to read and maybe we can see what others choose? Just to have recommendations 😃 4w
Librarybelle @RaeLovesToRead 😂 You‘re more than welcome to join or think about it! 4w
Librarybelle @Gissy A journal is a good idea! I also have a spreadsheet I update semi annually with my titles from the #192025 challenge. There are some participants who post what they plan to read or what they have read, which is a good way for recommendations. I also hashtag the year on my posts for the challenge, so you can search a year‘s hashtag on Litsy to see what has been read. But yes, any way for recommendations is good! 4w
thebacklistbook I swear I am signed up for too many challenges now including this one! 4w
MaGoose Please add/tag me. 4w

Librarybelle I‘m going to the library later today too, @AllDebooks ! Next week starts my temp work at the library of my undergrad days, so lots to do to prep not being home all the time. I also realized I never posted about October‘s #LiteraryCrew book, need to finish the Agatha Christie for discussion tomorrow, and finalize the #192030 to post on Storygraph on Wednesday. Whew! I‘m going to be busy this weekend. 😂 1mo
Librarybelle Enjoy your day, @kspenmoll ! 1mo
Bookwormjillk @kspenmoll that sounds perfect! Enjoy! @Librarybelle @AllDebooks the library is one of my stops today too. I have to stop by the thrift store since the kids need costumes for spirit week at BBC school next week too. So errands, but fun ones. Then tonight I‘m going to put up some Halloween decorations. 1mo
Bookperson96 Enjoy your time together @kspenmoll . 1mo

Librarybelle ⬆️⬆️⬆️ Please let me know if you would like to be added to the tag list. This time, unlike the last challenge, I‘ll post a semiannual check in to remind to update your records for reading and for sharing with others in the group. I‘ll also tag everyone when the form is available on StoryGraph (and StoryGraph will tell you the original pub year for a book) and when the challenge officially begins. All are welcome! 1mo
Bookwormjillk A little scary to be joining a challenge that ends after my youngest graduates high school but I‘m in! 1mo

Deblovestoread Welp, I am not going to finish #192025 by the end of the year but finishing it and this one in 4 years seems doable, right? Count me in 😀 1mo
Librarybelle @Bookwormjillk It is so hard to believe that 2030 isn‘t really that far away! 1mo
dabbe Please add me! I'd love to try this. I'm planning on rearranging my clubs and cutting down, but this one sounds like a really good way to get some actual books off the shelf! Thanks for hosting! 🖤🤍🖤 1mo
Librarybelle @Deblovestoread I probably won‘t finish either, but I have high hopes for #192030 ! 😂 1mo
Librarybelle Sounds great, @dabbe ! I have a shelf of golden crime novels that would work perfectly! 1mo
mabell Thanks you! Looking forward to checking off more boxes! 1mo
Gissy 🙋🏽‍♀️Let‘s see if I will still be here or if I have to participate as a ghost👻I know..morbid me 😂Halloween is almost here 🤣 1mo
Amiable @Deblovestoread I‘m not going to finish, either! I was kinda hoping that we could reset the #192025 challenge and extend the end date a couple…10..years so I can complete it. 😄 1mo
Librarybelle Oh my, @Gissy ! 😂 Let‘s hope we‘re all around or else ghosts reading! 1mo
Librarybelle @Amiable 😂 Clean slate starting in January! 1mo
Suet624 I‘m scared. I‘ve always been tempted by this challenge, but then I just know I‘m gonna feel like I‘m under pressure. Silly, I know. (edited) 1mo
Librarybelle @Suet624 That‘s understandable. I am disappointed I won‘t finish #192025 , but I‘m also amazed by the authors I met that I would not have without this challenge. 1mo
Daisey I have considered joining the original randomly but really didn‘t want to in the middle, so I think I need to join the new one. No idea how close to finishing I‘ll actually get, but why not add another checklist? Please add me to the tag list. 1mo
BarbaraJean Please add me! I‘m 16 books away from finishing #192025 and oddly enough, the idea of starting #192030 is helping! I was hoping to use more books from my shelves, but I have several harder reads left… with a new challenge, I feel more free to swap those out for quicker reads and save the harder ones for next year 😆 1mo
Librarybelle @BarbaraJean It is comforting, isn‘t it? I feel the same way! 1mo
Mollyanna Looking forward to this! I‘ve got a bunch of old paperbacks that this should take off my shelves. 😊 1mo
Librarybelle That‘s great, @Mollyanna ! 1mo
Read4life Can you add me please? 1mo
llwheeler Yay! Looking forward to it 1mo
kwmg40 Please add me to the tag list! I'm not quite done my #192025 challenge yet but I only have 22 left so should be able to finish it early next year if not end of this year. 1mo
triplem80 I'm intrigued...please add me! 1mo
AnneCecilie Please add me to the tag list. I‘ve really enjoyed the one we‘re doing now 1mo
TheBookHippie Yay! I just finished the last one! Terrible about posting! I‘ll do better 🤣🤦🏻‍♀️😩 (edited) 1mo
BarkingMadRead Ohhhh this is so cool! I‘m in!! 1mo
Kitta Oh so cool, I‘m in! 1mo
Maggie4483 I‘m in! Since I‘m failing miserably at #192025, I‘m eager for a chance for redemption! 1mo
Lizpixie I‘ll give it a try! Hopefully it‘ll help keep my #bookslumpitis at bay! 1mo
Librarybelle I hope so, @Lizpixie ! 1mo
julieclair Yay! I‘m in! I‘m only 65% done with #192025, but I‘m enjoying it. Starting with a clean slate will be fun! 1mo
tdrosebud I'm in. Seeing this post made me aware that the #192025 is ending but I don't think I'm anywhere close to finishing. Oh well, I'll see where I'm at at the end of the year and then join the new. 1mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick I'm in! I didn't pace myself early on, so now I'm scrambling, but I am committed to finish #192025 before starting in the next one, even if it does take me a couple of months into the new year. I have 32 left to read, including a few in progress & 3 might be children's books for genre diversity. 😁 I'll just try to plan a little better for the next one. 1mo
Librarybelle Yay, @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick ! And congrats on being close to finishing #192025 ! 1mo
TheAromaofBooks YES! I definitely want in!! #192025 has actually been one of my favorite challenges and I only have TWO BOOKS LEFT so I think I'm actually going to finish by the end of the year!!! 1mo
Librarybelle Yay, @TheAromaofBooks ! That is incredible!!! 1mo

I cannot believe that this is the last six months for #192025 !

For the first half of 2025, I managed to read 4 more titles. I am determined to get as close to finishing as possible.

And for those interested, I will post the official announcement for #192030 , set to begin in January 2026 and run through December 31, 2030. Much like this current challenge, read one book originally published for each year, 1920-2030. ⬇️

Librarybelle If you would like me to tag you in the reminders, such as the official post and when the challenge is added to Storygraph and goes live, let me know. 4mo
Mollyanna Please add me to your list. This sounds fun! 4mo
mabell I would like to be on the list! I have quite a few reviews to add to Litsy, but probably not checking off many more years. 😆 It‘s been lots of fun to see how many I got! Thank you for doing it! 4mo

BarbaraJean I have 25 more titles to go... hoping I'm not deluding myself that I'll be able to stay on track to finish by the end of the year. If somebody would just ground me from spontaneous library holds and new buddy reads, I'd probably be fine 😂 Please add me for the next one! 4mo
Bookwormjillk I am super interested! Almost done with #192025 just missing a few chunks. 4mo
Librarybelle I‘m so glad you‘re interested in the next round, @Mollyanna @mabell @BarbaraJean ! I‘ll tag you when I post the official info in a couple of weeks and when I post the challenge on Storygraph (I‘m aiming for October 1st). 4mo
Librarybelle Yay, @Bookwormjillk ! I‘ll add your name to the list! 4mo
Amiable Me! 🙋🏻‍♀️ I have been plodding along on the list and will not finish by next year — but Hope springs eternal for the next one! 😀 4mo
Librarybelle Terrific, @Amiable ! I‘ll add your name to the list! 4mo
Bookwormjillk I just looked and I have 26 left (but am in the middle of The Bean Trees 1988 now). 4mo
Librarybelle @Bookwormjillk Yay!! You can do it! 4mo
llwheeler Please add me too! 4mo
Librarybelle @llwheeler Hooray! I‘ll add your name to the list! 4mo

I finally took the time to tally my #192025 titles read during the second half of 2024. I managed 8 titles…thank goodness for book discussions!

I still have a number of years to read by the end of the year; if I do not quite make the whole list, this has been such a fun challenge all the same. I plan to start it again in 2026 with #192030 …details later this year!

I completed the 2000s decade and am nearly finished with two more decades. Yay!

julieclair Ooohhh… I need to tally mine. 🫣 So glad you‘re going to start again in 2026! I really enjoy this challenge. 💙 9mo
Librarybelle Thanks, @julieclair …I think it‘s so fun! Glad you‘re enjoying it too! 9mo
Bookwormjillk 2026 still sounds so in the future 😂 9mo

Librarybelle It really does, @Bookwormjillk ! 😂 9mo
BarbaraBB You‘re doing great! I used to read so many classics but since joining Litsy I have switched almost completely to contemporary fiction. 9mo
Librarybelle Thanks, @BarbaraBB ! I think my reading has broadened even more thanks to Litsy. This past year I was able to read more contemporary fiction, or at least books published within the last couple of years, than I did when I worked in the library. Odd, but true. Keep reading the contemporary fiction, and I‘m sure I‘ll keep stacking books based on your reviews! 9mo
BarbaraBB Litsy has definitely broadened my reading too! 9mo
