Why do bad books get pretty covers? My book club chose UF for our genre this month, and I‘m 164 pages in and want to bang my head against a wall. Will I DNF? Probably not, but will I regret reading all 800 PAGES of this book? Absolutely.

Giving in to the desire to hate-#reread this series. Makes for a good evening read — not too much work (the flashes of rage at the misogyny/ableism/racism et al in the text aside....) & just enough reasonable prose to bind it all together. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I went in with an open mind since everyone has been recommending it to me for years, but this book was so g-ddamn rapey & so intent on glorifying abusive behaviors that I ended up hate reading it just to finish it. (That said, I do enjoy a good #hateread so I‘ll likely read the sequels at some point.)

#unpopularopinion

Weaponxgirl I heard about it being rapey in a doesn't really look at the consequences way and it put me off. Thanks for making me feel better about this decision 😀 6y
Libby1 Ew. Like @Weaponxgirl I will avoid this. 🤬 6y
lauren.lerner That‘s exactly it, @Weaponxgirl — the very real consequences are never addressed with how Jamie treats Claire. It‘s gross. 6y
lauren.lerner I get why it‘s popular, @Libby1, it just doesn‘t work for me. I‘ve been making a more concerted effort to skip rapey stuff whenever possible lately too. 6y

I absolutely hated The Catcher in The Rye and I wanted to punch Holden Caulfield in the face just to shut him up, ugh 😒 #UnpopularOpinion 👎🏻 #HateRead #ReadingResolutions 📖🌺

#BookNerd 📚💙

AmyG I read this book twice....and didn‘t like it both times. 7y
ShookBelf I felt exactly the same. It was almost painful to read. 7y
BookNAround I don‘t like this one either. I read it both as a preteen and in high school when most people fall in love with it. I suspect it would be even harder for me to love as an adult. 7y

Kaye BINGO. I don‘t like it either. 7y
Kaye @AmyG 👎👎 2 thumbs down. 7y
DarcysMom I loathed Holden Caulfield as a teenager - I can't imagine I would find him palatable now. 7y
TheKidUpstairs I read this one in my twenties, and had the same reaction you did! You are not alone, welcome to the "Shut up, Holden!" club ? 7y
GloVerdino I thought I was the only person who hated this book! 7y
Jess7 Holden drove me a little crazy too. 😂🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y
AmyG @Kaye yep. And Holden was such a little sh**. I never got the allure of this book. 7y
amber_ldsmom Agreed! Couldn‘t stand it! 7y
zezeki I remember reading this in high school and absolutely hating it. 7y
zezeki It's nice to meet people who hate the same books as you 😁😁 7y
JenniferJarrell I hated this in high school too. Every so often I wonder if I‘d feel differently as an adult, but I doubt it so much I haven‘t been moved to try a reread. 7y
sudi I didn't like it either, good to know people who share the opinion. Everyone just raves about it being their favourite in high school, and i just don't get it 7y
Shvonne I read in my senior year of high school and absolutely hated it. 7y
shelbyy I felt the exact same way! 7y
StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego @Bessiecat You're not alone 😆 7y
staci.reads I didn't hate it, but I was pretty indifferent, and I really can't understand why it's so raved about. 7y
britt_brooke This is one of my favorites books, but I can see how/why it doesn‘t work for everyone. 7y
TheFunkyBookworm Thank god I‘m not the only one! I read this in high school and hated it, then decided to give it another chance a couple of years ago and hated it even more! What a whiny little brat! Ugh. 😂 7y
lyradora I've never read it myself, but I get the impression that it has to be read at a certain age (like, 13 to 16) to be enjoyed. 7y

Soubhiville Maybe instead of “slice” he meant “smash”... ⁉️🍅💥 7y
2BR02B @Soubhiville the funny thing is, the authors describe every designer handbag this character owns in detail... but don't realize that vegetables don't require butchering? 😆 7y

Reggie Lolol I read this romance where the jock and the girl, of course the popular girl have a secret connection which is classical music. And I just thought, “who makes this **** up?!!!” Other than that it totally emotionally manipulated me. But it had it‘s eye rolling moments. 7y
2BR02B @Reggie Apparently this book has a twist no one saw coming. I hope the twist is that the male love interest is actually NPR's Bill McGlaughlin, because no one under fifty cares this much about classical music. 7y

#hateread! I‘m usually up for a good dystopian novel, but the premise is already silly and Erdrich did nothing to make it better. If you must read, definitely skim the first 69 pages. And then you might want to skim the next 200 too. 🙄🙄 (The book is 269 pages. 😂😂) Also, I threw it at the end. That terrible. 1⭐️

Kathrin Ohhhh... now I wonder if I should take it off my hold list. 7y
aschermetz Wow, that is an intense reaction! I‘ve been known to throw a book or two too. 😂😉 7y
Megabooks @Kathrin If it‘s library, see if you like it. Why not? 🤷🏻‍♀️ 7y

Megabooks @aschermetz I threw and rolled my eyes! 7y
aschermetz @Booksandcooks I actually want to read it now because the opinions on it seem to wildly differ! 7y
TheLibrarian Ugh I‘m trying to get through this now. I need to skim the rest like you suggested. 7y
Megabooks @aschermetz so true! I hope you like it more. 7y
Megabooks @TheLibrarian Totally. It‘s terrible imo. 7y
Lcsmcat “This is not a novel to be tossed aside lightly. It should be thrown with great force?” 7y
Megabooks @Lcsmcat I would have thrown it harder if I had less respect for printing and binding! 7y
Reviewsbylola So glad I bailed. This makes me think I made the right choice. #noregrets 7y
emilyhaldi For once we can agree on a book!! I HATED this one too. You can get as much out of it by skimming as you can reading if you ask me 🤦🏻‍♀️ 7y
Megabooks @emilyhaldi Definitely! Do we have a universal pan/bail @L_auren ?? This will be on my worst of list for sure!! @Reviewsbylola I think I have more regrets than you 😂😂😂 7y
L_auren It‘s on my bookshelf!! Will read soon! Cackling at this review 7y
Megabooks @L_auren lolololol 😉 Looking forward to your review! 7y

REPollock I've read categorically awful reviews of this so I don't plan to waste my time, but it makes me sad because I have loved a couple of her other books. 7y
Lola I love your review even though I had a very different opinion of this book. I absolutely love the split of opinions here on Litsy! This has definitely been a great book thread. 7y
JulAnna I am trying to get through this right now, not liking it much and skimming a lot! 😟 7y
Megabooks @REPollock I‘m interested to know what is good. She‘s such a prolific author that I‘m sure she has some hits. What are your favs? 7y
Megabooks @Lola Yes! Differing opinions are part of what makes Litsy great! I‘m glad you liked it 👍🏻 7y
Megabooks @JulAnna unfortunately that was the case for me as well. 7y
REPollock @booksandcooks I loved Last Report on the Miracles at Little No Horse, and also The Painted Drum. 7y
Megabooks @REPollock Thanks! I‘ll see if my library has them 👍🏻👍🏻 7y

This book is so painfully shallow so far I feel like I'm reading YA. If these characters were any more undeveloped they wouldn't even exist. I think I'm just going to hate read the rest of it. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Notafraidofwords Ugh that sucks. Sometimes when I'm reading books like that, I yell at the book. Sometimes I'm tired of the same phrases being used over and over again in recently published books. (edited) 7y

mcctrish You are all my people 8y
rubyslippersreads @mcctrish Glad to know I'm not the only one. 8y
BookishMarginalia I sailed through it when it first came out and enjoyed it. (Angels and Demons is better, though.) 8y
quirkyreader I have never read this one and have no plans to pick it up. 8y
DeborahSmall I #hateread this when it first came out. Couldn't and still don't understand the global sensation this turned out to be 8y
Sweettartlaura @BookishMarginalia I agree - Angels & Demons is a better read 8y
Verity I read this when it came out, then digital fortress, then angels and demons, by which point I found figure out who would be responsible even if not the how! Haven't bothered since. So fast paced I didn't notice some of the problems until I finished reading it and had time to think. 8y
Lindy I kept gathering examples of stupidities as I read, which had its own kind of satisfaction. Ie the rich guy with a lame leg puts his bedroom up a flight of stairs, the armoured vehicle is either not a standard transmission or the hero suddenly learned how to drive one, etc. 8y
Dolly @Lindy This makes me wonder. Is there a place where these mistakes or odd bits are collected? I collect them in my head but would love to see if others have found the same ones. 8y
Lindy @dolly I don't know of such a site but there very well may be one. Something to google. 😊 8y
ColleenLindsay There needs to be a Tumblr for that. 8y
