Elise, a street-smart girl from the wrong side of the tracks, and Jamey, the golden boy scion of a wealthy and powerful East Coast family make an unlikely couple. At first theirs is a tale of sexual obsession and wanting to have something you shouldn't. Jamey is both attracted by Elise and repelled by her - she is gritty, uncouth, abrupt and a million miles from his rarefied social circle. In some ways he hates her, yet he keeps coming back for more. For Elise, the attraction to Jamey is visceral. She sees something in him beyond the rich boy mask, and she has always loved to test the boundaries, defying anyone who tries to stop her. But as they get to know each other what started as a challenge gradually transforms and they get to see beyond social class and upbringing to the real person beneath. Their obsession slowly turns into something more like love, and Elise creates in Jamey the lover she wants and needs. In turn he leaves behind his Yale education and divorces his family and their wealth, and they invent a new life together that surprises them both. But Jamey's controlling family are not going to give him up easily and Elise and Jamey will have to fight for the ending they want to their story...

For much of this book I felt annoyed by the characters and the slow plot, but I cannot deny that I did not want to stop reading. This is a weird and racy book about the weird relationship between Elise and Jamey that takes them from their families (his rich and entitled, hers poor and addicted) through mental health issues and to everyday moments between a couple. I didn't love it, but I'm glad I read it. #lmpbc

Normal People is the much lauded story of Irish teens Connell and Marianne as they try to navigate their on and off again relationship. In the tagged book, Jamey and Elise meet in New Haven and fall into an intense love affair. Both novels deal with class, although White Fur is more overt about it. At the end of the day, I enjoyed White Fur more. The writing is beautiful and the characters are flawed and hopeful.

This book was not at all what I expected, but wowza, it is a good one.

Really great writing about an unlikely couple set against 1980s NYC. This book is gritty and graphic, and it deals with way more than just a romance.

Let the record show that it only took me 2 years and 4 months to read this BOTM selection. 😂

Karen, this book will be on the way to you tomorrow. I can‘t wait to hear what the group thinks.

Hello, ladies of #LMPBC group L.

I‘m about halfway done with this book and having a little bit of a freak-out. It‘s way racier than I expected and I‘m not sure I should send it. I don‘t mind it at all and I‘m going to keep reading, but I‘ve never sent anything with so much sexy-times for a postal book club.

Should I send something else? 😬😬😬

Chili 😮 I‘m intrigued? 2mo
thebluestocking I‘m usually not offended by sexy times at all, but I think you should whatever you makes you the most comfortable. 💙 2mo
suvata Of course, it‘s completely up to you but if you are not comfortable sending it along then there wouldn‘t be any problem changing the book at this late date. You would just have to read the new one really quickly. LOL 2mo

Librariana I'm not even part of the group, but I giggled when I read your caption about "sexy times" ??? Hope you come to a resolution that'll make you feel at ease. Very thoughtful of you to keep others in mind, tho! 2mo
sprainedbrain @Chili @thebluestocking @suvata I‘m comfortable with the book, just wanted to make sure none of you had aversions to that sort of thing. I‘m not hearing strong objections, so I will probably send it. Thank you! 😃 2mo
sprainedbrain @Librariana well you know, I read all sorts of way trashier books on my own, but I don‘t usually send them along for book club. Thought I should check! 😂😂😂 2mo

Finally got around to this #botm pick that is described as a love story set against 1980s NYC. It is much more than that. It is a reflection of socioeconomic clashes and sexual obsession, as well as the deep human connections we all desire. This book was so literary and profound.

March ‘18 reads. I struggled this month and picked up and put away 3 other books that I didn‘t end up finishing. Luckily, I spent Spring Break at my mom‘s and was able to read and complete 2 books while I was there for a total of 6. White Fur was definitely the best of the bunch with the Strayed in second.

Like nothing I‘ve ever read! Jardine‘s observations and descriptions are so precise that you wonder how she even slowed her brain down enough to see them, and at the same time wrote them so fast to capture them on the page. It‘s like a beautiful trick of the brain. Read this! 💝

I‘m on my second book for the #botmbingeathon - work has been killing me! Taking up all my reading time 😭

I‘m only a few chapters in, but so far so good for this modern day Romeo and Juliet. Jamey seems like the stereotypical 80s prep boy and Elise seems to be causing his neurons to miss fire in all the ways young love does. Can‘t wait to see what happens to these two! #litsyatoz #rhc #litsybingo #readingwomenchallenge

#2017Book209
The first 250 pages tell the story of a dysfunctional girl from a poor, screwed-up family who decides to make her rich, preppy neighbor boy fall in love with her. You follow their relationship for most of the book, which is mostly just the two of them secretly wondering if they actually like each other. The last 50 pages feel like they belong in a completely different story. One where stuff actually happens.

mcipher “One where stuff actually happens” cracked me up. Zing!! 😂😂 2y

Well I didn't hate it but I can't really say I liked it either. There just wasn't much to it I suppose. Nothing really happened for long stretches and what little did just didn't ring true to me. I still cared enough not to bail and think if the ending had been stronger I would be more forgiving.

A Romeo & Juliet retelling, and I wish I had just spent my time rereading Shakespeare. The two MCs, Jamey & Elise, are unlikable, which would be ok if they were interesting, but they're not. Their relationship seemed more toxic & less like a great love affair, & I didn't care about them. I kept reading to see what happened, as I was expecting a huge WTF moment. There wasn't one. This book was a whole lot of nothing, broken up with sex scenes.
