4/5 ⭐️

I might‘ve rated this one higher had a certain proposal happened differently. I‘ll just leave it at that. #notmything My second book finished in the #24in48 #readathon

Gissy I have this one in my tbr! I have so many books that I want to read this summer! 😲I wish I could read straight 24 hours! 5y

And here are your first set of questions to answer! As always I started with the easiest questions tog et us warmed up and the discussion started. Feel free to elaborate as much or as little as you wish, just mark the spoilers if there are any!

AmyG I loved this book. I didn‘t know anything about Circe in mythology so I can‘t comment about that. But I loved her as a woman...with a woman‘s needs, wants and feelings. 5y

AmyG As for the gods...Circe was so much more. To me she seemed half god, half human. 5y
TheSpineView I enjoyed this book immensely. I would love to read more from the author. The author did take some literary license for example the number of children Circe had. I especially loved how she humanized Circe. In this book she was drawn more to humans than what I remember. 5y
TheSpineView The author had Circe grow beyond her godhood. I don't recall that from my study of mythology... but it has been a while since I was in school. Regardless I liked how she developed the character. 5y
Caroline2 I loved the story and Circe but I found the author‘s writing style difficult at times. I don‘t know why, but my mind just kept wandering?? I didn‘t find it as immersive as I thought I would. 5y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa 1 I really enjoyed it, much more than I thought I would. 2. Definitely, she fleshed out a female character that was really just an obstacle for Odysseus, and made a well rounded and complex character. 3. Yes, I think she learned a lot which is why she chose something else by the end. 5y
BethM I‘m with @Caroline2 , I didn‘t love this, and after trying a few times I DNFd. It wasn‘t immersive for me and I think the writing style didn‘t fit. 5y
cherinium @BethM You're not alone. I found this to be quite a slog. I don't remember much about Circe from my studies of mythology, so I can't comment on Miller's take on her. The character just didn't grab me, and the writing style underwhelmed. This was absolutely #notmything #unpopularopinion 5y
BethM @cherinium glad I‘m not alone! 5y
Gezemice @Riveted_Reader_Melissa @TheSpineView @amyG I have read Circe last year and it absolutely blew me away. I meant to re-read for this but did not get to it... I do recall however that I loved the writing, the lyrical yet hard-edged sentences, Circe coming into her own powers, and finally realizing that gods are assholes - and finding her humanity. Godding in Circe‘s world is being petty and squashing brutally - and you can‘t be happy like that. 5y
Gezemice @AmyG @TheSpineView Circe is a minor character in the Odyssey - Miller inserts her into better known stories of mythology, as well as making her her own character. It gives her an opportunity to throw in most of the Odyssey, much of Troy, Scylla and Charybdis - but also weave a feminist story. Even goddesses were raped. 5y
Schnoebs I enjoyed this and thought it was decent but I‘m happy that I‘m not alone in thinking it couldn‘t keep my attention. It took me twice as long as I normally would for a book this long. I did enjoy Circe as a character and the path she took where she tried to fix her past mistakes and not glorify them like heroes and gods would. I‘m not sure how much she learned from it but she did try to fix it which I liked. 5y
InLibrisVeritas @Schnoebs I had issues with it holding my attention too, even though I loved Circe as a character. I am glad to have read it though. 5y

A rare Saturday with no work has given me a beautiful afternoon of porch reading time. It's quite warm today, but a strong breeze has made it comfortable. 🌻🌻🌻

I'm almost done with this book, thankfully. It has been a snooze fest. I've come far enough that I need to see it through. 💤

Ugh!! This was definitely not for me. I liked the artwork, but the story and characters were a total turn off. 3 💥💥💥 out of 5 for the art, 1 💥 for the story.

Redwritinghood Totally agree. This one wasn‘t for me either. 5y

Neverwhere | Neil Gaiman

I finished the #audiobook narrated by Gaiman this morning. I have to say, I am completely underwhelmed. This was my first by Gaiman (I had never even heard of him before joining Litsy). I found the story quite dull and felt that the narration sounded as if Gaiman, himself, was bored with the material. I wish I had bailed. #unpopularopinion #notmything #eventhecatwasbored #littenkitten #catsoflitsy #adventuresofthegmen

plaidchuck Yes it was his first solo novel and also a novelisation of a BBC TV series he co wrote. I would recommend giving Stardust or American Gods by him a try some other time. 6y
Tomigirl44 Gaiman is a new author for me as well - just read The Sleeper and the Spindle, The Ocean at the End of the Lane, and next up this afternoon is American Gods. I‘m not overly crazy about his writing but want to give him a fair try. The Ocean certainly is unique and unpredictable - I read it within 24 hours, just picking it up every so often and reading a chapter or two. 6y
cherinium Thanks for the recommendations. I am certainly willing to give him another chance, but I will likely go with a print version next time. I've seen that many seem to adore his voice, but it was sleep inducing for me. The audio also had a lot of voice effects and music added, which just felt cheesy and hard to understand for me. @plaidchuck 6y

cherinium @Tomigirl44 Thanks for your recommendations! 6y
DivineDiana I listened to the audio of The Ocean at the End of the Lane and loved it! Tried to share with my husband and he was having none of the voice that enchanted me! To each his own! 😀 (edited) 6y
cherinium @DivineDiana We are all, as humans, wired a little differently. I've read that many people love Gaiman's voice. I've seen the word "hypnotic" used more than once. For me, there was something about his voice that would make my mind drift off and lose all focus. I'd suddenly become aware and realize I hadn't really heard anything for several minutes. It took me even longer to get through the book because I had to rewind so many times. LOL 6y
plaidchuck Oh yes the effects were distracting, i remember that. Funny enough they also later did it in a radio drama with James McAvoy, Benedict Cumberbatch, Christopher Lee, and Natalie Dormer! I wish i had started there! 6y
