Maria.Bpl Personally, I love Margaret Atwood and The Handmaid's Tale was an eye-opener in high school because it was the first novel we read where the protagonist was a woman and not a man in a dystopian society. 8y

jfbalke I've read other Atwood boods but never this one, so I finally got around to reading it right before the election and ended up finishing it afterwards. As a result, it got darker than I had even expected. 8y

HMG I studied for A Level, I really think that this book had a profound impact on me. I still have my copy 17 years on, full of notes, ready to pass to my daughters when they are old enough. 8y

SarahPolaris I studied The Handmaid's Tale for A-Level as part of our "Struggle for Identity" module. My essay focused on the 'subjugation of women' and I remember I thoroughly enjoyed writing it. It's still on my bookshelf and - on reflection - has definitely had a marked impact on my life and indeed my chosen career path! I sincerely hope all who read it, immerse themselves in the story and are able to get something from it. 8y

Marta73 I am a contrarian. I did not like this. I felt very upset and uncomfortable about the woman's situation and do not need that angst and gloom. I agree it was well-written but do not recommend to those who have limited time to read. Choose a happier more pleasant read. I recommend Deanna Raybourn or Margaret George. 7y

RainbowStar This is an excellent book. I have read it many times since my first read in High School English. Every beautiful book written by the awesome Ms. Margaret Atwood has left footprints in my mind and heart. She weaves magic with her writing and invites us to enter into some dark areas of humanity but brings you back to the hope and Love of humanity before her tale is finished. A Canadian treasure!! 7y

Leone The day of the Triffids was my first dystopia as a young teenager. Later, I followed it up with This Perfect Day by Ira Lervin. I was by then hooked on dystopias. Later again as a 20 year old, I read The Handmaids tale. It taught me that in the future there could be a more worrying menace than flesh eating plants or science gone mad. There are humans. This is a gripping, eye-opening, terrifying story that everyone, not just women, everyone should read! I haven't watched the show as I like to keep the characters as I imagine them written by the author, not a director or producer. Sorry, just my bias there. 7y

vividandromeda I was given this book by my English teacher! We studied it as a class, and each got to keep our own copy. I loved it, and mine has this amazing cover art that implements Scrabble into the title (if you've read the book, you'll see the relevance). A provoking read 7y

YABookShelf Read this in university and loved it. Watched the Hulu series last year, and loved what they did with it. If people are looking for other reads in a similar vein, I‘d recommend Perfected and Tarnished by Kate Jarvik Birch. The last book in the series comes out on April 3rd, 2018, and it‘s called Unraveled. 7y
