Roses and Rot
Roses and Rot | Kat Howard
Imogen and her sister Marin escape their cruel mother to attend a prestigious artists retreat, but soon learn that living in a fairy tale requires sacrifices, whether it be art or love in this haunting debut novel from a remarkable young writer (Neil Gaiman). What would you sacrifice for everything you ever dreamed of? Imogen has grown up reading fairy tales about mothers who die and make way for cruel stepmothers. As a child, she used to lie in bed wishing that her life would become one of these tragic fairy tales because she couldnt imagine how a stepmother could be worse than her mother now. As adults, Imogen and her sister Marin are accepted to an elite post-grad arts programImogen as a writer and Marin as a dancer. Soon enough, though, they realize that theres more to the school than meets the eye. Imogen might be living in the fairy tale shes dreamed about as a child, but its one that will pit her against Marin if she decides to escape her past to find her hearts desire.

It‘s been years since I read this one but the dark fae or scary #Fairies 😉 still come to mind. I remember liking the fairytale meets dark academia vibe. 🥀🧚

This was definitely a strange book. It was not at all what I thought it was going to be. I really liked the fairy tale theme in the book, but some of the fae stuff got a little bit out there for me by the end. It was just too much and the ending was so rushed. I didn‘t hate this book - it just was a bit too much at certain points in my opinion.

October #doublebookspin

⭐️⭐️ I won this book 4 years ago during my first Halloween photo challenge here on Litsy and #screamathon2020 #doublebookspin was the perfect time to finally read it. It started off strong with some Goblin Market vibes but quickly dissolved into a clunky mess of a story. Glad it‘s off my tbr but disappointed, stories of the Fae and Faerie are just not for me.

TheAromaofBooks At least it's off the list!! 3y

Two sisters reunite at an elite school for artists after escaping an emotionally and physically abusive mother. There are secrets at the school, and the price when they are revealed may be more than the sisters can pay.

Seeing the sisters relationship rebuild was wonderful and the amorality of the Fae was well done.

But there was something missing, and I can‘t quite put my finger on it. The narrator, though, was perfect for this book. 🌕🌕🌕🌗🌑

“This is the thing about fairy tales: You have to live through them, before you get to happily ever after. That ever after has to be earned, and not everyone makes it that far.”

A luscious dark fairy tale featuring two artistic sisters (a writer and a dancer) who escape their abusive mother and earn spots in a prestigious art program. Of course, the school is hiding secrets and not everyone is who they seem to be.

#MarchIntoThe70s #day8 #TinyDancer This novel is the last one I‘ve read with a character who‘s a dancer. Imogen, an author, and her sister Marin, a ballet dancer, are accepted into a prestigious arts school for a year. Marin has a gift for dance, one that has caught the eye of her mentor, a principal dancer at the National Ballet Theatre, but he has a secret, one that‘ll turn Marin‘s world upside down.💃🏻

Cinfhen I remember seeing this book on Litsy a year or so ago when it was released. I remember it being a popular pick!!! And maybe there‘s even a #LittleDanger in this story too!?!!!? 😂 5y

Another sunrise from the wrong end, but wow,was this book worth it! A story of two sisters, eldest a writer, youngest a dancer, besieged by an evil mother who undermines & abuses constantly.Years later, both are accepted to a arts retreat, not knowing that the Fae run it & expect payment. Dark, dangerous & gorgeous. #Booked2019 #FairyTaleRetelling #MountTBR2019 #Bk7 #LitsyAtoZ2019 #LetterR #LittenLoveBingo #LLB19 #FeaturedInALittensPhotoChallengePost

I think it‘s because I‘ve started a Challenge Journal to keep track of them all. I highly recommend this book if you haven‘t read it yet👍 5y

I‘m so glad I asked hubs to pick, this book is fantastic! Almost 4hrs later and I‘m at halfway, I can‘t put it down. It‘s the kind of faerie story I love, where the Fae are cruel & amoral & Faerie is a seductive but dangerous place. Just having a tea break before diving back in. #Booked2019 #FairyTaleRetelling #MountTBR2019 #Bk7 #LitsyAtoZ2019 #LetterR #LittenLoveBingo #LLB19 #FeaturedInALittensPhotoChallengePost

This was really terrible. I only finished bc I listened to it on 3x speed. Weird setting, story and characters that just were very two dimensional. My hubby says he can tell when I really don't like a book bc I do this eye-roll thing as I'm reading/listening to it. Well there was much eye-rolling with this one lol 🙄

Also, I read this bc Neil Gaiman blurbed it. I feel so betrayed 😟🤣

"...a thick haze that smelled equally of roses and of rot." Something is rotten at Melete--the artists' colony where Imogen and Marin are awarded nine-month residencies...

If you haven't read it and like stories steeped in fairy tale & folklore, Roses and Rot is a great summer read.

Imogene and her sister Marin have left their terrible mother behind to attend a prestigious artist retreat. The retreat seems like something straight out of a fairytale, but soon the sisters learn that fairytales come with their own set of sacrifices, be it for art or for love. Imogene, a writer, and Marin, a dancer, must learn what they would sacrifice in order to become the best. Only one sister can claim the top spot.

I really liked this and stayed up late last night to finish (so glad it was Friday). 😊The writing reminded me of Gaiman in places but the author definitely has her own voice. A solid storyline, fairy tales mixed in with the story, and some thought provoking quotes made this a winner for me! 👍🏻

Ashley_Nicoletto I really like the bigger screen on the oasis and the page buttons, but honestly it's not that different from my voyage. I mostly wanted it for it being waterproof and because I can't help myself. I like it a lot, but if your happy with your voyage it may not be worth the upgrade. 6y

I really, really liked this beautifully written dark fairy tale. Kind of Tam Lin meets Goblin Market. I loved the depiction of the sisters‘ relationship & gradual revelations about their childhood, and the gradual reveal about the true nature of Melete. Two weak points: Imogen‘s writing (way too bland for a character supposed to be an amazing writer) and the wrap-up of the mother storyline (needed a lot more development). Overall, though—loved it!

brandymuses I enjoyed this one too and agree about the mother. Not my favorite Tam Lin retelling but still a great book. 6y

We've already seen so many amazing costumes and spooky #bookstagram posts this weekend! ⠀
.⠀
ROSES AND ROT was one of Kendra's favorite fantasy books of 2016. It's reminiscent of Holly Black's gritty and raw stories, but Kat Howard's interpretation of the Fae possesses a maturity, a dark beauty that glitters with its own type of literary magic. ⠀

Perhaps too sunny-looking a photo for this prompt and this book.
I'm about halfway through this book and it is so not what I expected. It's definitely a fall kind of read, with a strange setting at an artists' residency, and the haunting fairytales that Imogen writes.

I wanted to like this book and maybe that‘s the problem - too much expectation. In the end, I was underwhelmed. It‘s not bad, but I was in no way compelled and started skimming towards the end. The premise is great, but the plot and character development are muddy and underdeveloped, as if the author were skimming to get to the end to. Fun enough, but a pretty hollow reading experience overall.
