For readers of Neil Gaiman, Margaret Atwood, China Mieville, and David Mitchell comes a striking debut novel by a storyteller of keen insight and captivating imagination. On a cool evening in Kolkata, India, beneath a full moon, as the whirling rhythms of traveling musicians fill the night, college professor Alok encounters a mysterious stranger with a bizarre confession and an extraordinary story. Tantalized by the mans unfinished tale, Alok will do anything to hear its completion. So Alok agrees, at the strangers behest, to transcribe a collection of battered notebooks, weathered parchments, and once-living skins. From these documents spills the chronicle of a race of people at once more than human yet kin to beasts, ruled by instincts and desires blood-deep and ages-old. The tale features a rough wanderer in seventeenth-century Mughal India who finds himself irrevocably drawn to a defiant womanand destined to be torn asunder by two clashing worlds. With every passing chapter of beauty and brutality, Aloks interest in the stranger grows and evolves into something darker and more urgent. Shifting dreamlike between present and past with intoxicating language, visceral action, compelling characters, and stark emotion, The Devourers offers a reading experience quite unlike any other novel. Advance praise for The Devourers A wholly original, primal tale of love, violence, and transformation . . . Ive never read anything quite like it.Pierce Brown, #1 New York Times bestselling author of The Red Rising Trilogy Astonishing . . . a narrative that takes possession of you and pulls you along in its wake.M. #LittensDressedInBlood – Monster Mash – This is a dark, strange book about gender, identity, and one‘s place in society. It‘s also full of monsters who call themselves werewolves and various other things.

This book is awesome. It's also really hard to describe. Outside a tent in Kolkata, a man meets another who claims to be a werewolf, or half a werewolf. The whole book is about identity. It's also a really compelling story.

I probably picked it because of this gorgeous cover. I have a lot of books on my library wish list. Don't judge. Lol.

This book was recommended by fellow Charles deLint fans. It‘s been awhile since I‘ve read any urban faerie tales. Edit to add: it‘s a werewolf/ shapeshifter story. Except for Oliver Reed I‘ve not liked werewolves. The “ick” factor is high.

I‘m not sure what to say about this book. I feel like I wanted it to be more than it was. Or it wanted to be more than it was. Or maybe it was more and I didn‘t see it? 🤷🏻‍♀️ I read it for a book club and I‘m looking forward to our discussion.

I‘ve been struggling with this one. But now I think Cyrah and Gèvaudan are going to fall in love and somehow that has really grabbed my attention! So of course it‘s time to go back to Alok‘s POV…

I am having way too much trouble following this in audio. I can't tell the difference between the frame narrative and the story the werewolf is telling. I guess I'll have to try this in print instead! #QueerBooks

Still TBR, I've heard nothing but great things about this one. I'm getting slight Historian vibes from this one & as I predict I'll have a massive book hangover when I finish Kostova's book, I 👇

vivastory will definitely be checking this one out in the following few days. #screamathonphotochallenge @4thhouseontheleft 4y

Psyche! Out of nowhere Squidapus read The Devourers and holy crap it was incredible! The tale of a man in India who meets a stranger that envelops him in ancient tales of mythical werewolves. But it's so much more. Beyond a fascinating story with wonderful prose it also tackles themes of misogyny within Indian and the world at large and ideas of gender and sexuality. The characters are so full and developed, even the worst of them. Read this book!

TheLibrarian I bought this based off the cover a while ago. Apparently I need to move it up on my tbr pile 5y
Squidapus @TheLibrarian Full trigger warning, this book contains rape (not super explicit but still heavily talked about) as well as graphic gore and sex, which I believe is handled and explored pretty fantastically, but can still be upsetting to read about. 5y
AiBBot I want to copy/paste your trigger warning to my review as well. Well stated. 5y

If you did not enjoy reading The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, do not read this book. If you want a erotic story based in India about shapeshifters devouring souls of humans while dealing with the power of change from struggling with desire vs possession vs love, read this book. If you are interested in a Highlander/Princess Mononoke/Muslim/Hindu/history professor/monster mash up, read this book.

I read this as my epistolary novel for the #ReadHarder challenge @bookriot . The story was incredible, and the writing was evocative, but unfortunately what it was most commonly evoking was bodily fluids and functions...which makes me very uncomfortable.

This is an epic shapeshifter story! It defies description, it is so good. This is exactly how shapeshifters would be: mystical, magical, bloody, and raw and real at the same time. I eagerly await more from this author.

Everyone BUT the #shesgotclaws. A tale of shapeshifter/werewolf men. One of them sees a woman and despite her indifference says he is in love with her. He is of a pack of 3 and jealousies and all other human follies befall the godly group as the paramour goes out of his way to prove his love. Meanwhile, this whole story which is written on a scroll of human flesh is being told to a human outside a party. I really liked this book. Happy #NuYear

Horror and fantasy enmesh in this savage novel of shapeshifters who prey on humans and sometimes, though it‘s forbidden, become entranced with them. A dark and literally visceral tale that reveals a different world where survival depends on the poetry of blood and bone. Unforgettable. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
