Thank You for Listening
Thank You for Listening | Julia Whelan
32 posts | 29 read | 42 to read
From the author of My Oxford Year, Julia Whelan's uplifting novel tells the story of a former actress turned successful audiobook narrator--who has lost sight of her dreams after a tragic accident--and her journey of self-discovery, love, and acceptance when she agrees to narrate one last romance novel. For Sewanee Chester, being an audiobook narrator is a long way from her old dreams, but the days of being a star on film sets are long behind her. She's found success and satisfaction from the inside of a sound booth and it allows her to care for her beloved, ailing grandmother. When she arrives in Las Vegas last-minute for a book convention, Sewanee unexpectedly spends a whirlwind night with a charming stranger. On her return home, Sewanee discovers one of the world's most beloved romance novelists wanted her to perform her last book--with Brock McNight, the industry's hottest, most secretive voice. Sewanee doesn't buy what romance novels are selling--not after her own dreams were tragically cut short--and she stopped narrating them years ago. But her admiration of the late author, and the opportunity to get her grandmother more help, makes her decision for her. As Sewanee begins work on the book, resurrecting her old romance pseudonym, she and Brock forge a real connection, hidden behind the comfort of anonymity. Soon, she is dreaming again, but secrets are revealed, and the realities of life come crashing down around her once more. If she can learn to risk everything for desires she has long buried, she will discover a world of intimacy and acceptance she never believed would be hers.

I found this to be a very enjoyable audiobook- about an audiobook narrator, and read by the author. Lol, meta much? It‘s romance IMO, with a good foundational story though. Great side characters (I especially love Blah Blah 💕) and a fun peek behind the scenes in audiobook recording.

A nice breather in between more serious reads.

tpixie Oh, fun! I‘m going to need to listen to this after I‘m done with my current listen! (edited) 3d

3.5 Stars ⭐️ Charming, emotional, full of wit and with some serious elements, but the story felt forgettable, not very original. Still, very enjoyable :) I loved the insights into what its like being an audio narrator.

CarolynM I enjoyed the subplots more than the romance in this one. 3w

This was one of the books I finished in October. I listened to it, which is of course the way to go if you can, in order to hear Julia Whelan do all the voices. It‘s a romance set in the world of audiobooks and while some of it is predictable it was a good read.

marleed She did voices so well that it wasn‘t until I finished the audio that I thought about her narrating both sides of the romance. Could be my favorite romance of the year! 4w
MallenNC @marleed I have of course listened to her before but for this one I was hyper aware of how good she is at voices! There‘s a scene in this where someone doesn‘t believe the female MC did the male part in a book, and I really related to that! 4w
marleed Yea, she did great. So funny that I think I have to own this in print when I was adamant about experiencing the audio. But I need it for my shelves - I just know they are lonely without it ;) 4w
MallenNC @marleed We have to keep our shelves happy! 4w
marleed We must. And this particular support group has really helped in my loyalty to my shelves :) 4w

I don‘t usually post about books while I am reading them, but this one is making me swoon 😍. When I was younger, it was my goal to marry an Irish man. Perhaps because of the film Sliding Doors. Anyway, Whelan has written my dream lad into being and I‘m loving it!

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️Julia Whelan is one of the best audiobook narrators. So when she wrote a book of her own starring two audiobook narrators? I couldn‘t wait. I only listened to the audio version, and I loved every second. Laugh out loud funny, full tears-streaming moments, and everything in between - highly recommend.
Trigger warning: a realistic (from my experience) depiction of a loved one with dementia. If that would hit hard, please proceed gently.

Julia Whelan serves double-duty as narrator and author of her second book. Read my full review here: https://debbybrauer.org/#thank-you-for-listening

marleed I loved the story and audiobook and plan to own the print because I think it deserves a purchase. It cracked me up because while listening I never even thought of the two MCs being read by the same person - let alone the author. Kudos to Julia for that! 2mo

Witty, clever and very enjoyable rom-com that has a lot of fun with the tropes and conventions of genre romance while delivering strong characters, interesting subplots and a convincing HEA. Thanks to @rachelm for putting it on my radar.

3.5 stars rounded to 4. I really enjoyed this book for the first 7 hours. When there were about 4 hours left it hit a lull for an hour or two. I enjoyed most of the book so I round up to 4 instead of down to 3.

Some parts were difficult for me to listen to as it reminded me of my dads final years. It was done so painfully realistic and spectacularly accurate on the audiobook that it warrants me writing a trigger warning for dementia/Alzheimer's.

This was a fun one to listen to. Enjoyed the insider view of the audiobook narrators life. Lighthearted, but there were some serious elements too.

Fantastic read from popular narrator Julia Whelan (highly recommend the audio). The writing is witty & quippy. Her characters are fun & the banter was magnificent. The plot is somewhat predictable, but still totally lovable. Such a fun romp. A light rom-com, but has heavier elements layered in for a few more serious subplots that still go well explored. A fantastic read & a great amount of fun. This will be in my favorites for the year.

Just delightful! Right up my alley with the actor life and audiobook insider stuff. And I doubt it needs to be said, but listening to this is a must because author Julia Whelan is such a fantastic narrator, and writer. All the many voices and accents really show off her skill set nicely. If you‘re an Emily Henry fan you‘ll probably love this.

Since the long lockdowns of the last couple of years the birds in my area have been a lot less shy. This pretty little guy didn't react at all to me walking past. I'm loving the tagged book on audio - witty and clever and having a lot of fun with romance tropes.

Megabooks What a cute one! 3mo
LeahBergen How pretty! 3mo
Lizpixie I think it‘s a turquoise parrot! I haven‘t seen one before, I don‘t think they‘re in NSW. I do the BirdLife backyard birds survey every year, we have a lot of rainbow lorikeets, a few crows the maggies that return every year and I‘ve heard a currawong & kookaburra since lockdown but it‘s mostly bloody myna birds which I hate. 3mo

Cathythoughts Beautiful 💚💙 3mo
CarolynM @Lizpixie Mostly myna birds around here, too, but also a lot of magpies, some murray magpies, pigeons and crows, the odd galah and there‘s a pair of crimson rosellas who we see from time to time. We had an owl perched on my daughter‘s netball hoop one night last week - that was a first! I envy you the currawongs and kookaburras - I used to love hearing them when we lived in Canberra. 3mo
Lizpixie My aunt has a house in Gwandalan on Lake Macquarie where you can sit on the deck and watch the rosellas, lorikeets & cockatoos come down for some food. It‘s spectacular! And there‘s kookies everywhere too, I love getting up to watch the sunrise over the lake and listen to them laughing in the dawn. I envy you the owl! Our night flyers are mostly fruit bats 🦇 3mo
Jeg I‘m sitting outside now. We get a lot of little birds. My favourite are the Willy Wag Tails. 3mo

It‘s fun to enjoy some light-hearted books this month before my desire for October thrills takes over. My favorite is tagged, and I seldom give all my stars to a romance because I get so judgy about them!

5* = Loved It, want to shout out loud about this book! I do/will own/keep a physical copy. A+
4*= I liked it, would love to discuss. Solid B
3*=Meh, no need to discuss. Average C
2*=Nope D

alisiakae Ooh, you gave. 4 ⭐️ to the new Ali Hazelwood book, that‘s a good sign! 3mo

This book contains some of my favorite characters of the year. I really enjoyed the story and the timing was different than a typical romance. I don‘t mind reading unlikable characters, but kudos to an author when they can tell a story chalk-full of likable voices. The audio is great and somehow even funnier that the author is the lone narrator.

MrsK I recently saw an interview with Whelan where she discussed here career as a narrator…and discovered she was a writer herself. Can‘t wait to read this. Thanks for the great review 😊! 3mo

This was a fun romance about an audiobook narrator. Whelan has so much talent, both as a voice actress and as an author. I love how Whelan kinda pokes fun at romances in general, and she makes her characters so human, with relatable flaws and insecurities.

MrsK I saw an interview with Jill Whelan about her career as a narrator and immediately placed her book in my TBR👍 3mo

I don't usually pick up "romance" books but was curious because Julia Whelan wrote it and she narrated it too. Took a while to get into and chapter 18 dragged a little for me but overall a good read and Whelan's narration was great.

I think what I loved most about this book is its fun take on all of the romance tropes: snowed in, epistolary, mistaken identity, second chance, and one of the most unique versions of a love triangle I have ever encountered. For fans of audiobooks, the romance genre, and anyone chasing their HEA. The witty banter between the characters will have you laughing, and the emotional connections between them come through the pages in a heartfelt way.

Zuhkeeyah Great review! Definitely adding to my stack. 3mo

QOTD: Do you like reading outside? Just minutes from my home in Nevada we have the most beautiful parks in the mountains and I love heading up there for some reading. Where‘s you favorite outdoor place to read??

Sharpeipup Love reading outside as long as weather allows 3mo
Soubhiville I love reading outside, and have a nice back patio for it. Unfortunately I live in central TX, and this summer it‘s been too hot to be out for more than a few minutes at a time. 😢 Looking forward to some fall outdoor reading! 3mo
Adventures-of-a-French-Reader This morning in San Antonio, I read a little bit outside, but after an hour, decided to go back in because of the mosquitoes... That's the problem here: if there is no rain, the summer is super hot, but as soon as rain arrives and the temperatures drop a tiny bit, it's the mosquitoes that spoil the fun... 3mo
intothehallofbooks I love reading on my back porch early in the mornings on the weekends and in the evenings on weekdays. Especially in fall! 3mo

Salvaging a frustrating Friday with this charming read from fave narrator Julia Whelan, Negroni, and roses from hubs. Appreciating her insider view of audiobooks with snarky take on Romance genre. Funny that in my first Whelan (Greer Macallister's The Magician's Lie), the male narrator's real name happens to be Nick.

Grateful for access to the audio of this, because I‘m among the legions who love a good Julia Whelan narration. There were a few things I was a little unsure about re: how some characters were represented, but it was an overall very enjoyable read with fun characters and dialogue, some LOL moments, and ample audiobook-nerd-pleasing references. After a tragic accident, an actress turned audiobook narrator struggles to find her place in world. Many aspects of her life are in turmoil including her family, work and romantic life. All of Whelan's characters, including the group of extended family and friends, are layered and complicated and so, so funny.

I loved this book, the voice, the pace and how they don't give up on themselves or each other. #netgalley #arc

YOU GUYS. I‘m obsessed with this book. It‘s Julia Whelan (audiobook narrator extraordinaire)‘s romance novel about audiobook narrators. It‘s so funny and smart and original and Julia‘s reading of her own work is maybe the best audio I‘ve heard all year? (I think I‘m on audiobook 75 or so, so that‘s not nothing!!) Stack this one now. Out in August. It (should be, better be, if there is justice) will be huge.

Expected publication date is August 2, 2022.

Not only was this book a fun read but it was also quite informative. I had no idea how much prep work goes into narrating an audiobook. The characters were real and relatable. Oh, I also learned the difference between the book classification of romance vs. women‘s literature. If you want to know, you‘ll just have to read this book. You won‘t be sorry.

julieclair Julia Whalen is my favorite narrator! Looking forward to reading this. 5mo

I adored this book. Adored. While yes, it had rom-com elements (sooo much snarky humor and banter!), it also dealt with more serious self-esteem/growth issues, generational issues and just being real both with yourself and those you care about. This takes place in the audiobook recording world (which was interesting to me), and it involves two narrators (with pseudonym names) who haven‘t met but are tops in their field (he‘s in Romance, 🔻

robinb she‘s in various other Fiction). There‘s a serendipitous, chemistry-laden meeting before moving on, and then a big work project where new friends/interests are cultivated through some of the sweetest, funniest email/text chapters I‘ve ever read. There are misunderstandings, twists and things to be worked out, but you‘re rooting cheering for Sewanee and Nick (such wonderful characters!) throughout. 🔻 (edited) 6mo
robinb Just a mention, there are some 🔥 moments. So well written. Recommended. 5/5⭐️ 6mo
marleed I have this on my CWTR (can‘t wait to read) list! Julia Whelan is so often narrating a book to me that I feel like it must read her own work. 6mo

robinb @marleed I just looked her up. This is her second book to write. I‘m not an audiobook user, but it was so neat to read about their process. 6mo
marleed @robinb I think she likely narrates more books I listen to than any other narrator. She is a voice in all of Taylor Jenkins Reid‘s books and that‘s when I locked in her voice. 6mo
