Once I started this book I wasn't able to put it down. I love the characters and the tension that never seems to leave. This book also has some of my hidden-gender tropes.
It does have a few shifting perspectives that just add to the tension and drama all around.
I really enjoyed this and support picking it up.

Just downloaded the second book!! I feel like I need to finish this story. There are only 2 books in the series. I am using a kindle for this book because that is how I started this adventure.

This was a good book! You can‘t stop at this one. The author left you on a cliff hanger and now I am reading the second book because I have to know how the story ends. Be prepared to get the second book! I thought that might be the problem when I got half way through this book. The second book was not on my list, I am going to fire up the kindle & let you know how Smoke in the Sun goes. 4 out 5 #poc #feudaljapan #wolf #ya #woc

So far re-enjoying this book. Had to start over basically to have the story fresh in my head. I am 50%in and I realize there might be a cliff hanger at the end of book and I will have to read book two. I am liking it, little confused about about a couple character developments.

I dropped my phone and the screen shattered but everything still worked and I finished this amazing book! I loved every minute of this duology. I'm on a YA fantasy streak that is really making me fall in love with the genre.

Finished this last night. I liked it a lot, but the constant sentence fragments bugged me.

An adventure full of feuding samurai, hidden identities. and villainous scheming. What‘s not to like?

Sadly, I just didn‘t like this. The main character is a whiny brat, the writing is full of choppy sentence fragments, and I really didn‘t care for the story. This was my #bookspin for this month too 😕

It snowed yesterday so I didn‘t get out for a walk, but this morning I started this audiobook and I‘m really enjoying it so far!

Part of my Mulan prep ( although the movie release has been pushed back) is reading retells. This one is exciting despite its YA predictability ( no one explains themselves so of course the wrong impression is given). It is a series and if my library hadn‘t closed down I would get the next one to see what happens next

Reading with the Queen ( it‘s almost like being there, right? 😆)

Loved this book! At first I was nervous I wasn‘t going to like it because I wasn‘t in the right mindset. But once I got into this book I loved it and couldn‘t put it down! I was so intrigued in the story and the characters. I didn‘t know this was a duology so I don‘t have the next book on hand. It ends on a bit of a cliffhanger, but I would probably read the next book even if it didn‘t.

ThriftBooks gets an A from me today! I got this book in the mail yesterday.

I don‘t know if you can tell from the photo, but the top back is all water damaged and discolored. I think it had even started to mold a bit. So I complained. (I‘m not a big complainer).

And they are sending me a different copy of this book, hopefully in better condition! I‘ll then probably put this copy in my LFL.

This book was great, well written and I enjoyed the characters. And if you like retellings ,like I do it was great. Now it's not really a retelling word for word in that sense. However, I enjoyed the "nods" to Mulan.

I enjoyed this fast paced, inventive YA fantasy. However, it did feel lacking in something. I am hoping book 2 fills in what I am missing.

Done reading Flame in the Mist and I have enjoyed it. If you like reading about strong female characters, you should try this one. It's one of Mulan retellings which we don't get often. Love it! ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Just realized that I have really advanced in my audible stats. I've apparently achieved almost every badge and am a master listener. Woohoo!

Quick audiobook. I loved the setting and found the story intriguing. But I thought it got very repetitive at times. And some of Mariko‘s choices really irritated me. For someone who prides herself on intelligence, she does some really stupid things.

Imagine Mulan taking place in Japan and add some kick butt secondary characters plus epic world building! I loved this book so much!! And was total trash for the romance parts weaved in! 💙💙💙 This was an excellent YA fantasy novel and I can‘t wait to get my hands on book 2! Also I adored her first series too! The Wrath & The Dawn!

4⭐! I truly enjoyed reading this book! I wanted to get back to it as often as possible to see how everything would play out. The mild sorcery throughout dropped it to 4🌟 for me. I can't wait to read the next one!
